Thank you very much. Too much water based ink was exactly my problem.

Thanks Laura. It has taken me absolutely ages to realise - or have the confidence to discover - just how little ink I really need to make a good print. It was only at the end of several prints, when I had a bit of ink over and didn't want to wash it down the sink, that I used the tiny bit of left over ink on a spare bit of jotter paper and saw that it actually looked a whole lot better, smoother and even printed more evenly. So, to anyone starting out, I would suggest you start with only a tiny bit of ink and experiment until you find the right amount.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I'm just beginning my printmaking journey and have run to a few of the problems you've outlined here. Especially how to roll and apply the ink properly. Cheers!

Thank you, I have several hours of very frustrating printing behind me and that helped a lot. One thing I still can’t get my head around is that my water-based ink seems to not properly go into the linocut. It’s not because I don’t have enough or too much ink, it just doesn’t want to stick and I need to be really quick for it to not move in together.

Thank you so much Laura - I had just encountered a severe ‘tackiness’ problem with my reduction prints (Schmincke Aqua on various papers). I thought I wasn’t putting enough ink on my plate but probably the reverse is the problem, and I was lifting the first layer of ink off my paper as it was sticking to the lino with the second layer. It seems hard to find waterbased tack reducer now, but I have discovered that with Schmincke’s ink one can just use a drop of water. The other problem I am having is that not much ink transfers to the paper, so I think I overburnish, accentuating the tackiness problem as everything heats up with the rubbing. Maybe a tiny bit of water can help there, too - it has already been very warm where I live. So I’m back to experimenting! Including adding tiny amounts of neat watercolour paint to Schmincke’s lino base to get very transparent layers. Their base is supposed to be used to add pigments but as it’s all gum arabic based I thought I’d try and se

Thank you Laura, this has been so extremely helpful, I wish I'd seen a video like this a year ago when I was starting out. Your series is so wonderful in general, and I will add here that your registration device is brilliant and has facilitated my reduction printing enormously.

Thank you very much for doing these videos. Your work is much appreciated. I also wanted to mention that the volume seems to be lower on the more recent videos. The last few videos have been quite hard to hear compared to the earlier lessons.

Thanks for elaborating on your minimalist inking procedure. Makes a lot of sense and the process is becoming much clearer in my mind now. Also I have found that sometimes when I'm using a spoon to crisp edges or detail that I get some scribbling marks similar to how your described happens when you don't hold the baren properly flat and end up catching the edges of the baren. Do you think this might be because I am using too much pressure on the spoon? Hopefully will catch up with the live stream this week but it will be 5am here in Oz if I do. I've set the alarm!

Hi Laura! Love your videos--thank you so much! I have a question about the Lukas inks, which I just bought and am trying them out. It is very hot here now and the inks are quite runny. So when I roll them out, I'm getting rather thin and transparent color, which is not necessarily bad! But looking at your video, your red ink is quite a bit thicker when you are rolling it up than what I am getting. Any advice? Is there something I can use to make the ink a bit thicker, or?

Great advice thanks! What kind of paper weight are you using? I've had a frustrating experience with water based ink and I am switching to washable oil-based ink so I can print made editions of one lino block

I have a question. Can link printing be done on medium duck canvas and be archival? Should the canvas be primed with acrylic gesso? I have seen people use Lino block print for making handbags etc but not really seen in art. Also can India ink be used on a gessoes canvas or must the canvas be ungessoed. Your response and time is appreciated.
@LauraBoswellPrintmaker

Hi Romel - I wish I could tell you that, but I never print onto canvas myself. I would perhaps check with Cranfield Colours who have an excellent service to reply to questions like this about their inks. I couldn’t say about Indian ink either - sorry!

I don't know what it is, but my paint feels so rough it's not clean when I print. I was thinking it was the paint being bad. I'm going to try again. I really want to get a hang of this. I want to be able to make beautiful art pieces. When i release the paper there is like some kind of grind in my paint like a grainy texture. Can someone tell me why that is? your print is so perfect.
@LauraBoswellPrintmaker
@LauraBoswellPrintmaker 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonas - if your ink is lumpy or grainy, try working it with the roller for a good long time before you use it on the lino. It may be that the ink has separated a little. I have had this happen with Graphic Chemical inks and they are fine if you work them. It may take 5-10 mins to get the ink back to a good state and it is harder to work with on colder days. Good luck!
