Join me on this 4 day, 70 mile wild camping and canoeing trip on the river spey in scotland. I paddle whitewater rapids, set up camp with a tent and a tarp, and experience remote scottish wilderness as I paddle down the famous river spey which flows through the mountains in the Cairngorms National Park. This adventure was part of the Frontier Bushcraft River Spey Expedition. See links below.

Mike. Love all you TAOutdoors vids. Not only are you a terrific outdoorsman, builder and survivalist, I have to say the reason I so enjoy your vlogs is that you are a superb videographer, editor and filmmaker with only a go pro and a drone! Simply amazing! Thank you for many hours of relaxing, intriguing and just plain fun of content. BTW, your dad is a total hoot! Jaxx is also such a lovely puppy! Thank you. Hope you see this, Mike

Really captured the essence of the trip brilliantly - fantastic job. Having the energy to put into the filming after paddling all day and setting up camp, particularly when you were 'under the weather', is impressive. Even better is the quality of the video and how well it is put together - a natural flow (pun intended!). Well done Mike - was a pleasure to share the Spey with you.

Canoeing is a fantastic way to access the backcountry and kudos to you for putting your learning process up for everyone to see! I’m sure that isn’t always easy. Unsolicited advice, I know, but when I raced canoes on whitewater the two best pieces of advice I got early on were: “when you plant your paddle, treat it like a signpost embedded in the bottom of the river and pull yourself past it” and “when you hit a wave, have your paddle in the water, pulling yourself through it”. I’m sure Paul an Ray told you similar, but I saw you get a bit jostled a few times and couldn’t resist passing it on. Keep up the good work!

I did the week after you Mike. The difference in the water is amazing. We had much more flow; Paul said that we were getting in to camp 2 hours earlier. Less things to dodge but more big stuff. The archway on the bridge supports that you went through had less than a foot of clearance. Hope Dan, Anja and Matt behaved 🙂

Boats, travelling up and down rivers, making camps and telling stories around the campfire. Very Viking, without the raids. :) Hot water, lemon juice and a teespoonful of honey will sooth the throat. Hope you feel better after some rest at home. Totally awesome adventure.

On just about ALL of my canoe trips I take a Scandinavian Forest Axe, fold military shovel, two tarps, one hammock, one tent, cast iron skillet, fishing rod and tackle, shotgun, thermos, transistor radio and food. What I'm saying is when camping using a means of conveyance, I take A LOT of gear. It's all about balancing your load.

That looks like a really fun trip. It's been many years since I paddled a river and camped on the banks for several nights in a row. It brings back fond memories, thank you for that Mike. I paddled several Level 2 and a few Level 3 river sections, but only ever tried a level 4 section once, on the Ocoee River in Tennessee, USA. I survived, but I did get wet a few times and even had to do one under water escape from a two man Kayak. That taught me to stick to Level 2 and Level 3 river sections, and a canoe. I didn't care for the Kayaking too much, too fast, I prefer to see the landscape and not have to fight for survival constantly.

The UK has some glorious places if we can hang on to them to share as one great nation of people and cultures. Fantastic I watch it just so I can remember what a river with water flowing looks like. Nearly brings tears to my eyes. Here in drought ravaged Queensland in Australia we can fish pretty much anywhere. The trouble is, fish don’t live in dry river beds. Damn there’s a lot of water in Scotland......

Beautiful Country there!... Here, in the Ozarks, U.S., There are MANY rivers, lakes, parks, walking/biking trails and outdoor activities - I try to do a 2 day river trip every year, and have been for 30 years now (I'm near 50 y.o.) - I know exactly what you're going through and how tough it is on your body and how rewarding the beautiful country is - Love it ! - Everyone needs to get out and 'Rough' it for a few days - Good for the soul and healthy for the body - Be safe !

Great vid, did the Spey wth my son in July did all the rapids no problem less than 5 miles from end we bought it had to self rescue boy it was cold, I think when you complete a multi day trip you are euphoric to complete the challenge but also deeply disappointed that it's over, I feel for you at the end talking to Paul with the mixed emotions, we all go through this on every trip, best wishes,
