You’ve inspired me to plant again… the slugs have consumed every single carrot that germinated… depressing. I will just have to be more diligent in killing them. Slugs are about the only pest I do war with. I go out after dark and water slug prone plants with a solution of one part household cleaning ammonia with ten parts water. It kills slugs on contact and the ammonia is actually a nitrogenous fertilizer… not the perfect nitrogen fo carrots, but at least it’s not toxic. I don’t rinse the plants and have never lost one from chemical burning. I also use it on my beans and brassicas. On a separate note, for years I lost a huge percentage of my carrots to skinny little maggots. Then I discovered that if I plant about three rows carrots to one row of leeks, I no longer have this problem .

That would probably be perfect for this method because the leek roots are at a different level than those of the carrots. Just plant a few leeks in the mulch row. Thanks Garth

@@LiveOnWhatYouGrow and on yet another note, I have a useful method for planting my leeks. I use a 1“ x 9“ wood auger bit in my battery drill to get nice deep holes into the soil without compacting the adjacent soil as a dibbler does. Drop the leaks into the hole, but do not backfill with soil. Once planted I water each hole, which washes a little soil down around the roots and prevents any air pockets as might easily happen if one tries to backfill with soil. After a few waterings, the hole is completely filled. This year I am also adding a 3 inch box frame around each row of leeks, which will extend the blanched portion to almost 12 inches long.

G'day from Australia Garth. A more "natural" way in controlling slug predation is to sprinkle some breakfast oats around your seedlings. The slugs are attracted to eat them and after ingestion the oats expand, causing a terminal result to the slugs! Don't apply a lot, as you may attract other unwanted visitors to your food bed.... just enough each time for the volume of slugs you have. Good luck! 😊🍀

Why do you add the rows of mulch? Will you spread it over the carrots once they begin growing? I did this in my carrot bed as your video instructs and I think the robbins are spreading my mulch everywhere because every day I have to straighten it out again. Hopefully I get some sprouts !

I don't have robins, but my cat does the same thing. That's why I put netting over the bed! Once they're sprouted the mulch gets moved around by the rain and wind, etc.

I’ll look into doing that, it’s probably good to do that on the cabbage too, to prevent those pesky green caterpillars!
