I'm answering the question, Can you connect Multiple USB Audio Interfaces to an iPad or an iPhone at the same time? I've seen this question posted on forums and in Facebook groups many times over the years and I so it was time to do something about it. There are plenty of inexpensive small class compliant USB Audio interfaces on the market and it is not a stretch to think that one might want to get a bunch of them, with the intention of using them all at once. So in this video I am showing you exactly what happens when you try to do that.

You can connect as many USB Audio interfaces as you want! The problem is not the iPad, it is the app used, It is easy if you use Audiobus 3. If you still want to use AUM you can redirect to Audiobus without any problem using an Audiobus Output.

I arrived at this one via a search for using two audio interfaces. That happened because I made the typical mistake of buying an interface with only one input, finding, later, that I need two. So I have a Volt 1 with a single input and an Arturia Mini Fuse 2 with two inputs and two outputs, which is really what I needed, in the first place.

I know this video is about USB Audio, but it is possible to connect multiple devices to iPad using Bluetooth. BT doesn’t work for audio for the purposes of making music due to unacceptable latency, but it works perfectly for MIDI transmissions (with a good device). I bought Yamaha UD-BT01 USB to BT adapter recently and that thing has virtually no latency. I only have one, but I think you can have more of them connected because it allows for renaming of the device. So, my keyboard is hooked up via BT at all times now and the plug on the iPad is free to plug in audio interface and headphone jack is for speakers/headphones... cable clutter is pleasantly reduced to minimum. Without this adapter I kind of had to choose between having a guitar or keyboard plugged in. I got an Apoge audio interface with a single guitar jack and this whole setup is very mobile friendly. Also I have a Zoom H1n (pretty mobile-friendly) that works as a standalone mic or can be hooked up directly as an audio interface with the iPad. When hooked up to the iPad it disables onboard mic and headphone jack, so you have to use the headphone jack in the H1n, and the stereo mic on the H1n becomes available to the iPad. You can also plug in another mic into H1n, and maybe even an electric guitar, but I’m not sure about guitar because the audio output of guitar pickups might not be optimal. I haven’t tested H1n with latest usb-c iPads because I don’t have one (nor have any intention of getting one), but I think it should work similarly.

Yes you can connect several BLT connected MIDI devices and several USB MIDI devices to the same iPad or iPhone at the same time. I have heard from developers that there is a limit to the amount of BLT connected devices you can have, but I don’t know the number. I don’t have enough of them to try. So far I’ve connected BLT 3 devices at the same time. That’s as far as I can confirm myself that it works.

Hi Jakob , I've been watching your channel quite a while now and always look forward to it. This is the first time I've posted a reply and I'll have to apologize in advance for its length but believe it or not I really did try to edit it down. I run a Casio Privia PX-310 (5 pin midi only) to an i-Rig MIDI 2 interface and then to a Startech 3.0 7 port powered USB hub. Also: I run a Studiologic SL-88 via USB to the hub and then the hub connects to a Steinberg UR22MKll interface via USB and the Steinberg connects to my I-pad via Apple Lightning to USB 3 camera adpt. Both the i-Rig2 and the Steinberg are recognized in AUM at the same time.( no problem, just have to get the routing right)I also run from the thru port on the i-Rig MIDI 2 to a Roland SC-55 Sound Canvas which I can then play from the Casio. The audio outs from the Casio, Roland and the Steinberg all go to a Mackie 1202-VLZ Pro Mixer. To record audio to the Ipad from the Casio or Roland I then run line outs from the Mackie to the Steinberg.( Just have to remember to set the mixer channel receiving audio from the Steinberg to zero to avoid a feedback loop) I also have used this same duel interface set-up using an i-RIg PRO DUO Interface in place of the Steinberg before I got it. But now if I want to record video to my Samsung phone with decent audio I can run the whole system from the line outs of the Mackie to the line ins on the i-Rig PRO DUO and connect directly to my Samsung phone via O.T.G. cable. ( 3 interfaces total) As far as I can tell the i-Rig PRO DUO is the only interface out there that supports O.T.G. which my model Samsung phone requires. The i-Rig Midi 2 interface is quite inexpensive and has 5-pin Midi IN-OUT+THRU to USB ports. The UR22MKll and the SL-88 have both 5-pin and USB MIDI ports which comes in handy if you have some older keyboards like I do that I sometimes like to add to the mix. I still have a DX-7, TX-81Z, RD-600 + even an old Wirly. Or, if I want to strip down to portable, I can use just the i-Rig PRO DUO with my i-Rig PRO KEYS( both with batteries) and my I-pad. I hope some of this was of interest and again, sorry it went on so long.

Hi there and thanks for the write-up! There was a lot of info there and I’m a bit confused about one thing. Are you using two audio interfaces at the same time? Or are you talking about an Audio interface and MIDI interface combo? At the top you mention an iRig MIDI 2, but then you Mention an iRig 2. Just need to have that clarified.
@JakobHaq
@JakobHaq 4 жыл бұрын
iOS can handle multiple USB MIDI interfaces without problems together with one Audio interface connected to the lighting port. But I’ve never been able to have dual audio interfaces connected without one being prioritised over the other. So that’s why I’m wondering about your setup.
@allenshively6374
@allenshively6374 4 жыл бұрын
@@JakobHaq yes,the i-Rig Midi 2 is (just) a midi interface and you can use it through a powered hub while using either the i-Rig PRO DUO or the Steinberg powered by the hub going to the Ipad. AUM will recognize both at the same time. When I'm using the i-Rig PRO DUO connected via O.T.G. cable to my Samsung phone it is at the end of the audio line outs of the mixer and not going to the Ipad. In that set-up only the i-Rig Midi 2 and the Steinberg are going to the Ipad. Maby it only works because the i-Rig Midi 2 is (just) a midi interface but used with another full blown midi/audio interface that is class compliant AUM will recognize both at the same time. A tipical set-up might be that I will rout an i-Grand or Colossus piano to both keyboards, SL-88 on the bottom tier, Casio on the upper. Then rout another AUM channel with a warm string pad from somewhere like bs-16i to just the Casio. It let's me play just a grand piano on the bottom and be able to seamlessly move my right hand up to the upper keys to bring in the same piano but layered with the string pad, then hold down the sustain pedal and seamlessly drop back down to the lower keys and play just the clean piano over the sustained strings. I use AUM like this a lot to control a live layered mix.
@JakobHaq
@JakobHaq 4 жыл бұрын
Ah, I understand now. 👍🏼 Yes iOS can actually handle a multitude of MIDI interfaces together with one audio interface even if that interface has MIDI too. The only thing one has to think about is how much power one have to work with depending on the Lightning adapter type >>> kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q5iKl6aj1rzSaI0.html

It’s 2022 and with the latest M1 iPad Pro it’s still not possible to switch between output USB audio devices… such a weird limitation for a “pro” device. And it’s not that it’s not possible to switch between audio interfaces in general on an iPad. Switching between on-iPad and bluetooth or AirPlay is very possible and easy. It’s just USB switching that’s not supported. So weird.

iOS still does not support aggregate devices. You can technically connect two sound interfaces, but iOS will only use one of them for inputs and one of them for outputs. Also, such connection is extremely unstable. So no, in the end, one audio interface is the way to go. When it comes to MIDI however, we’ve always been able to have as many of those as we can power.

I use an expert sleepers ES-8 with iPad. It has an ADAT port. The extra ADAT channels are available in AUM even though I haven't got any ADAT gear connected, so I'm sure it will work fine. @@GregorMcNish Hello, I just bought Behringer UMC1820 - has ADAT as well as SMUX, so it should be able to do some chaining. Anyway ONE ADAT socket provides always maximum of 8 channels. So your sentence: "ES-8 with ADAT would be 12in/16 out," would not be true in that case.

@JakobHaq
@JakobHaq 3 жыл бұрын
It behaves this way because of what I showed in the video. iOS can only handle one sound interface at a time and that includes the headphone port. iOS will switch to the last connected I/O interface. . There are cases where you can have something connected to both the headphone port and USB-C/Lightning port at the same time. But only if those are different from one another. . For instance, one can connect a USB Microphone (Input source) and a headset/headphone (Output source) at the same time. But it becomes a problem if one is using a headset with mic (TRRS) like EarPods for instance. Those have a mic and if you first connect the USB mic and then the EarPods, iOS will switch from the USB mic to t mic on the EarPods. . What you need is a sound interface with more Inputs and outputs plus headphone port(s). There are so many multi channel USB interfaces on the market that can be used with iDevices (iPad and iPhone). As long as the interface is USB class compliant it will connect. Some need a powered USB hub to work because they require more power form the USB connection to work. . I’ve tested spun interfaces from 1 I/O (Input/Output) to 16 I/O. Many options and they won’t have to cost you much either.

None of the Apple Lightning USB adapters (nor third party adapters) allow charging through the USB port. If you want to connect USB devices and charge your iDevice at the same time then you need to use the Lightning to USB 3 adapter. . It was made specifically for charging purposes and has a proprietary lighting port on it together with the USB port. The Lightning port is for connecting Apple iDevice chargers only. . There are cheaper ones out there with that does the same thing but I don’t recommend buying non MFi certified stuff when it comes to lighting adapters.

I DID GET NEW IPAD THIS WEEK, NOT THE 4GIG RAM 11” Pro, but, Hexacore 2019 Mini with new Apple 7 sound chips, so, it can handle Cubasis 2. Better than iPad mini 4 2015,..I think the stereo is better and sound quality. But, new IPhone XR, has frisking 4 GIG RAM! ..this is what I will use now, unless I won Lottery tonight! ; ) .. I see no point to buy CB3 yet 4 me, ..will wait til sale, bugs are ironed out...then, Perhaps. What do I reccomend for Guitar rec input: ANALOG TO DIGITAL OR 3,5 mm audio jack, which pro doesn’t have.btw ppl USE A IPHONE AS PREAMP EQ VST AMP TO USE LESS IPAD RAM? ..and import the wav, rather to mix in? okej, so, many questions, I could go on with more, like bass stuff,but, u get the gist of topic request in general now...,then, there r drums....midi rec or wav? ..CB2.28...drums sound good and wide stereo makes them wider...so, much to discuss! Bet, Kong Gadget Kkts sound awesome with that Maximizer push control booster. Also, will try STARK KB BOARD ROOM..FOR DRUMS? .., i am iRigKeys/Akai mini KB orientated, I prefer to put in BackPack to play bass n drums, my fingers and eyes r used to,I prefer for DYNAMICS with Midi or sample players,..not Pad user much, but, love Apple GB drum kits...I actually sat and could transfer that visual kit/aural knowledge to play a ROLAND HI Q PRO DRUMS, WITH STICKS N PEDALS IN MUSIC DRUMSHOP! ..real kit is best; more variation of strikes, ECT,..but, if u can read drum tab, play a iPad kit,..u can audiate sounds to real kit,know, what timbre n groove will sound like as u,slowly Kearney to play real eDrums,..do, in FUTURE,..BUT, IN APT SETTING U NEED EARPHONES...LOL! Life is what it is, u use what u got,..Huh? Thankyou Jakob for fine vid tut, reviews n Ambient Solo songs.Bye. Adios, folks!

If you have a USB hub, I don't see why not.

You can plug in several midi keyboards using a USB hub, but that doesn’t work with audio interfaces like that, because iPad only sees one audio interface. You can have 1 audio interface with 8 audio inputs, for example, but you can’t combine several audio interfaces using a hub.
