I loved playing MultiVersus when it first came out. Watching the slow downfall of the game, leading to it eventually being shut down until 2023, broke my heart. In this video, I'm going to take a look back on the history of the game to see what went wrong. #multiversus

The biggest issue multiverses had was that it was trying to be something it wasn’t. Like at its core it was a party game trying to be a live service and that was the problem. Because of how oversaturated the market of live service games are if u don’t do something different that helps u stand out from others it’s not gonna do well. Other than that the game had a ton of issues, the terrible matchmaking, some of the worst hitboxes I’ve personally seen an a fighting game, an unbalanced roaster, and super repetitive gameplay, along with not having a lot of keeping people interested. Not to mention having those overpriced skins didn’t do the game any favors either. Overall tho I’m glad the game has been making a ton of improvements during its downtime and fixing these issues from the sound of it but really wish the devs just held off on this game cause it’s clear the team just wasn’t ready to handle a live service title.

Agree with everything you said except blaming the team. Releasing the game in this state was a corporate decision, not a developer decision. Chances are, if a huge game like this has a massive problem with it, you can almost assuredly blame it on some sort of forced deadline from some guy in a suit that makes 10 times what the entire development team makes.

I got into MVS at the beginning after getting an alpha invite. It was fun enough so played a bit. But in the middle of the first season I got extremely burned out on the game. The balance was all over the place and the balancing patches didn't seem to know where the issues were. The whole perk system was ultimately going to doom their balancing efforts (an issue I called out in alpha) because either the perks are significant and the characters have to be balanced around their most min-maxed loadouts or the perks are insignificant so they don't matter so why not get rid of them? Fighting games require a very careful balance and it can't be achieved if players can substantially alter their fighter's capabilities at round start in a blind system. Ultimately, while the game had a lot of good things going for it, the developers baked too many issues into the core DNA of the game and it wound up being unsatisfying to play (in addition to perks it's inability to decide if it was a 2v2 game or a 1v1 game was going to doom the balance as well especially since in 2v2 there was no team friendly fire meaning some combinations of characters made things miserable).

People want stuff like other Looney tunes characters, I mean Marvin was cool, but we want Daffy or... *Lola* And more new show character, Rick and Morty was a great addition, we wanted more like Ben 10, Johnny Bravo, some other DC character. I had a little obsession with this game and my reason to stop playing is I never fully liked the physics and hitboxes, they just felt weird, too floaty and random; most characters felt weightless, like they could evade any hit at the last second, most matches were a ton of missed attacks on both sides. It made you feel like you lacked control. I was trapped by the game for the characters (I love cartoons). Actually the presentation in general, aside from the music, was pretty great, but I never felt like the gameplay was polished enough. I really think the problem with this game was way deeper than monetization and content updates.
@1982pokemon

Watching the gameplay in the video is two characters buzzing like flies, altering their momentum like four times per jump, and missing attacks. Part of the fun of Smash is having that sense of weight to each character and attack, and being able to land hits with a predictable sense of physics. Smash characters can only alter their momentum by jumping, air dodging (risky), or their up B (very risky). I'm watching these Multiversus characters float around with 5 sudden bursts and jolts per air time.
@Gacu001
@Gacu001 8 ай бұрын
@@1982pokemon yup, you kinda get used to it but up to a point, where every match you still wish characters where bigger or something lol. Honestly the first months of this game being released was some of the best gaming moments I've had since OG PS4 days. With that being said it really hurt to see the downward spiral of this game despite being one of the biggest peaks we've seen from a fighting game. I think one of the main issues with the game was that they didn't have any direction when it came to the seasons and the character releases in general. I feel like they would've a longer lifespan for the beta if they actually provided themes with each season and a character bundled with it. So they can actually make it balanced and to create more hyper behind the season releases. Not to mention the battlepass fillers just felt like random garbage and assets they had laying around so they just threw it in. Even if the gameplay wasn't subpar or perfected, I'm sure some players would've disregarded some of those flaws if they could've been grinding for themes that they were nostalgic or passionate for. Like imagine a villans theme or a sidekick or even as whole network theme such as looney toons or cartoon network. Instead of releasing what was seemingly to be random characters that the devs wanted instead of the majority of the fanbase. They could've even released a redux to each theme so they could've capitalized on the hype generated from that season theme. But it was just directionless and they didn't create any season trailers or even character trailers (i think they had only a rick one) to create anticipation. It really felt like they dropped the ball when it came to player engagement and made it so that there was dead air after every season release. Literally the only thing that kept players engaged was the patch notes and that's a whole different can of worms.

For me personally, the thing that killed my interest in the game were the challenges to level up the battle pass (not to mention some of the battle pass rewards themselves weren't that great either). There were daily challenges that were more tedious than the others, and even though you can reroll to get different ones it was the luck of the draw if you got a more doable one with your free reroll. Not to mention the Seasonal Challenges that got added were worse, one of the ones I had was getting about a hundred wins (or some other absurd amount) with a Bruiser character, but the only ones I was decent at were Garnet or Jake, so it made me feel like I HAD to play them despite leaning more towards Support & Tanks. I get those kinds of challenges are there to make you branch out & experiment but they were really egregious & became more of a chore. I just wanted to get on & have some fun for an hour or so & grinding out matches with characters I don't like isn't exactly fun for me. I do hope it makes a comeback since at it's core there WAS fun to be had but it's gonna be a big uphill battle for them.

I was in the top 1000 players on the ladder for the first few months of the game, at a point reaching rank 50 (there was no ranked mode but they still ranked players based on mmr) . The reason i grew tired of the game was the consistent bugs combined with the inconsistent mechanics. Mashing attacks or dodging during a true combo works like 50% of the time online, so there's little to no point in learning combos, especially against laggy opponents. and that's not even mentioning the crazy rollback bugs where you find yourself on the respawn platform without even having seen your death.

When this game comes back next year here is a checklist of things I'd want to see: 1. Ditch FTP, just sell the game for 30 to 40 something bucks and keep the microtransactions if you have too, while also releasing a finished game with CONTENT to play. 2. (It's probably not gonna happen but) PLEASE make the game faster and more combo focused PFG, I know the floaty gameplay makes 2v2's easier to balance, though when it comes at the cost of 1v1's, you know, the main mode people play! 3. Give me SOMETHING to do by myself when the homies aren't online and I want to play some single player content. It doesn't have to be anything like NASB 2's campaign, or World of Light, however I would take anything rather than nothing. 4. Keep up the good work with the wonderful characters that have well designed and creative movesets. : ) 5. Buff Shaggy.

I do like this game for what it was, despite having to get past it's short comings. I just hate 1v1's, terrible balancing and while I was able to get past it over time, the floaty-ness really killed all my friends enjoyment. Just because something feels and plays different from smash does not make it fun/more interesting. Look at NASB 2 and how that game is doing great by adding onto what makes smash interesting with a meter system rather than trying to avoid even being close to how other platform fighters play.

I think there's something fundamentally wrong with the game if you need regular content updates and battle passes to keep it fun for more than a week. I think what really killed the game was the lack of modes, and the live-service model really not working for a platform fighter, setting up certain expectations that the dev team couldn't keep up with. I also personally didn't enjoy the game as much as I would have liked to as the movement felt weird and the character movesets were far too complicated. I shouldn't be having to keep track of multiple cooldowns and status effects in a fighting game.

The game failed because it was jank, the netcode sucked and the hitboxes and hit priority were wack. PFG acknowledged both the hitboxes and the netcode/servers needed improvements and promised that they were revamping both. When the hitbox and netcode changes finally came they either didn't improve the game enough or actually made the game worse. At pro levels the game was a joke; Harley was one of the best characters and players literally didn't use any of her special attacks. The later battlepass problems aren't what killed the game, it was already dead/dying by that point. One of the final nails in the coffin was when they started releasing characters almost no one wanted like the Gremlins.

MultiVersus came out at the right place, at the right time. It came out when Smash Bros Ultimate was just about to finish its 2nd Fighter Pass, Brawlhalla decide to bring in more guest characters, and at the same time Nick All-Star Brawl was announced it came out with… lackluster results. While MultiVersus was trying to be the next Brawlhalla, and even though it certainly wasn’t going to be in the same level as Smash Bros, Player First Games did a better job at handling their first game than what Gamemill did with the first Nick All-Star Brawl. And as someone who used to make videos about another Warner Bros Crossover game years ago, MultiVersus was a worthy successor of it. In its beta it was blowing all stars out of the water, and I swear on my left testicle people were trash so they complained about everything without even looking at what was done well, and even better than in Melee which is 20 years old, and especially leagues ahead of fucking Nickolodeon. The biggest mistake from Warner was to make it a free to play game. When the could have paid a good developer to release a full product. Even if it has dlc in the future. Is like the Disney Kart free to play/pay to win.

I enjoyed the game a lot, personally. What I didn't like was how Rick and Stripe were clearly over-tuned on release with really strong kill options. Stripe in particular seemed to have no weaknesses largely due to the free hit revolver and ridiculous chainsaw command grab. It felt like they just wanted people to pay to get the new characters, which sucked. I actually really liked the movesets and creative move designs. A lot of fighters felt really unique and deep, with a lot of unique moves for normals, which pulled me in in a way other platform fighters didn't

To be fair. I had heard that this was a beta and that they are gonna rerelease the game in 2024 after learning from what the players liked and hated. They could take that knowledge and put it into changing the bad aspects of the game to make it better on full release.
@fatyoshi696
@fatyoshi696 8 ай бұрын
personally, I went from being super hyped for the game to completely dropping it after just barely a week, the game just did not feel good to play, the movement felt like tracking through mud and the attacks and animations felt super squishy. The game also had what I like to call "moveset imbalance", which is when the moves in a character's kit have very varying power levels, with some being extremely spammable and others being totally outclassed; this isn't an issue in and of itself, but multiversus also had super harsh staling that punished you for spamming your character's few good moves and forced you to use the worse ones instead, and the small movesets made this problem worse. Also, I'm a rivals of aether player, and by comparison most of the characters weren't super well designed, they either had absolutely nothing interesting going on or were a total mess of unrelated gimmicks, and the few that did have great ideas were very poorly executed, LeBron James' ball mechanic was super fun but you were discouraged from ever throwing the ball because while it is a strong projectile, it was too great of a risk because of how awful his ball-less state was, essentially meaning the character actively discouraged you from interacting with his main mechanic. As someone who prefers to totally ignore battle passes because a game should be fun enough to keep you playing without a battle pass to keep you coming back, the game had absolutely no staying power for me and I deleted it after only 5 hours of playtime, if you want a good pc platform fighter come play rivals, it plays and feels super well and has thousands of characters thanks to workshop support if you're willing to pay the $15 on sale entry fee

Are you serious? You think it was them focusing on the characters that ruined this game? The focus on the roster was actually one of this game’s ONLY strong points, it’s the total opposite of what you concluded. The things that ruined this game might as well just be listed as “everything else”. No singleplayer content, the online features sucked, and locking characters behind a paywall felt insulting. Force a battle pass down my throat, whatever, but don’t gatekeep the main pull of the game, the characters, from us. That was so stupid.

Now, it seemed fun, a team-based platform fighter with characters from shows I've watched? But that battlepass... I hate battlepasses. Not only do you have to pay for them, but you also have to have the energy and focus to play daily and not abandon the game when the hyperfixation ends. I don't have that, man. You lose out on the ability to get special characters and skins if you aren't there since the beginning. It sucks!

The sad aspect is that a Warner Bros platform fighter could've worked given the legendary studio's filmography and catalog of content they could've used. But unfortunately, the game quickly fell apart with alot of bad decisions that quickly ruined the game such as unbalanced roster, broken hitboxes, terrible online services, ridiculously overpriced skins, and an insanely long unlockable system that is far too time consuming to get the fighters you want. Which is a darn shame as if none of those mistakes were there. The game could've been a success and we would have gotten characters who didn't make it into the game such as Pinky & The Brain, Scooby-Doo (surprisingly he wasn't playable), Spear & Fang (Primal), Samurai Jack, Scorpion (Mortal Kombat), Leonidas (300), Neo (Matrix), Beetlejuice, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and so many others.

"Multiverses had a pretty unique way of leveling the battlepass" proceeds to list the most base-line cookie cut battlepass structure possible, I.E. 'Daily/Weekly/Seasonal challenges that give progress' this is how 99% of battlepasses work, so I don't know why you said this as if its true. It just isn't. "The battlepass didn't just level up organically" This means that your time spent doesn't get rewarded by progress, something that again, 99% of games with battlepasses will do in some way or another just by playing the game. This means that once your challenges are done, you have no way to progress. How is this a positive? Yeah, it encourages you to try different things, but its so restrictive and *only* rewards repetitive clocking in to do your dailies.

having a brand new studio try to attempt the live service model was a recipe of disaster. F2P makes the barrier to entry easier but the retention is the same as any paid game. Just because it's free doesn't mean people will keep playing it. In fact, it being free means people have less of a reason to commit. MVS (open beta) shows why the live service model isnt for everyone heck even major developers struggle with it. I'm glad they are taking the time to reassess and actually get their schedule together so that way on relaunch they can actually support the game in a way that maintains momentum. That's the challenge people forget, these games arent reliant on how many play rather how many keep playing. So you have to release content to get players coming back AND the content has to be meaningful and not just content or people won't feel the need to play

Before I watch the video, here is my take on why Multiversus died so quickly : Multiversus attempted to do the classic f2p formula which relies on two things : a free-to-play game + a long term live service with free content updates. The thing is, Multiversus at its core lacked incentives for players to keep playing the game over time. Free incentives were almost inexistant : ranked rewards were pretty lame and appealing only for competitive players and apart from a very few skins that required significant grinding, there was no qualitative free rewards accessible to the average player. The battlepass was "ok" but its progression was way too slow, which also contributed to shifting the playerbase from "everyone" to "competitive players only" as the initial launch hype dried out. With those core issues unresolved, Multiversus could have died wayy quicker than it actually died, but it survived for almost 6 month thanks to its super intensive new content release schedule. Every two weeks, new characters and stages kept bringing back players, but returning players would for the most part, try the new content and then stop playing again until the next content drop, because the core issues of the game were still here and unresolved. This lasted until december 2023 when PFG couldn't stand this cranked up release schedule anymore and started putting more time in between each content drop - which made the player count drop significantly as time passed without any new content drop. Of course there was all the little issues like battlepass grind being tedious, game having balancing issues and desync + hitboxes issues at some point - but to be honest, that was never the core issue in my opinion, and were things that really affected the competitive playerbase more than anyone else (which is ironic because at that point, we competitive players were the only ones still playing). I'm deeply convinced the core issue was from the game having nothing to offer to players other than new characters and stages for everyone people to keep playing. I really hope that they reworked the entire core of the game for 2024 - with new gamemodes, as well as redesigned progression and monetization systems.

I feel like what almost every live service game needs (let's be honest here, live service games are not gonna go away and the industry is pushing it to be the next big thing even with all the outrage, so we might as well know what works with it and what doesn't) is just game modes. From what I gather playing Valorant, there's just not enough modes to cater to more of their casual audiences, they even removed some of these modes. I feel like if you're gonna make a limited game mode, it'd be better if it was like a holiday specific mode with its own rewards (okay, maybe limited time rewards is a bad idea considering it's just another way to squeeze money out of the player's pockets). But yeah, it's hard but I feel that a game should cater both to audiences who play the game casually and who play the game competitively. For casual players, they can maybe add a game mode, with random item drops like in Smash Bros, for competitive players, they can strive for a better ranking system and maybe rewarding and incentivising the playerbase to rank up, as well as balancing out the characters.

I don't think any game should be allowed to have a cash shop or a (paid) battlepass while in alpha/beta. By the very nature of a beta, the game is unfinished... So how can a company be allowed to charge for post-launch content for a game that is still being built on the launchpad? AND that's not even mentioning that while Multiversus was TECHNICALLY free-to-play... it was designed around it's premium currency, which is why initially, they were selling "Founders Packs" (between $40 and $100 U.S.), which came with character tokens and gold, letting founders skip the grind for gold to unlock characters, and instead use it on things like perks... And just like we've seen a thousand times before, a studio/publisher pushes an unfinished product out of the door, takes millions of dollars from their playerbase only for the game to shutter its doors so that it can be retooled and revamped... using the money they scammed from their playerbase. I think Steam, Epic, Sony, MS, and Nintendo all need to have rules in place to prevent these video game rug-pulls from happening, because it's only becoming more frequent to the point of becoming the standard/norm. I say, if devs/pubs want to charge for a founders pack/beta access... That's 100% fine. But MTX's, DLC's, Battlepasses, and any other kind of post-sale monetization should be reserved EXCLUSIVELY for finished games because that stops studios from putting more time and resources into their monetization schemes, and instead put that time into actually finishing the game.

You can't have a healthy game if your core gameplay is that inconsistent. Halfway through season 1, I quit because of that inconsistency. By the time they rolled out the hitbox changes it was way too late, they alienated half of their launch fanbase.
