6 жыл бұрын

In today’s show, the Dixons make revelations about their relationship, and are sent by clinical psychologist Dr Tanya Byron on an outing to learn to praise son Harrison. But Dad Darren has to come back half way through the day. Alex Pitt is finding giving up breastfeeding very tough going, and has a major argument with husband Toney, 3 year old Kelsey shows her mum she loves her.
Presenter Claudia Winkleman guides the audience through a week-long journey at TV’s first ever child and parent behaviour refuge.
During their stay at the House of Tiny Tearaways, three families live together, while child psychologist Dr Tanya Byron works with both parents and children to solve issues around fussy eating, sleeping habits, and public tantrums - and she'll challenge the parents to get to the root of the problems they're experiencing raising their children.
With Dr Tanya Byron's help and advice, the hope is that the families will learn useful pedagogy techniques and gain new insights, giving them long-lasting support though the parenting challenges they're facing.
Real Families brings you stories of modern day family life from around the world through the eyes of children, parents, and parenting experts.

That is obvious right from the beginning. She is more interested in breastfeeding her son, not her baby because he is not a baby any more. I still think that it is at least partly that she doesn't want to be intimate with her partner, and it's obvious that he finds the whole thing repulsive. I really don't see them staying together much longer.

Tony knows her struggle with this - that's why Dr. Tanya told him to be in change of Toby all night. She snuck in the there - I know it sounds like she's a child, but they needed to make her stay out with the other parents and have Tony stay near Toby's bedroom to be the one to catch him when he wakes up. And I nursed a toddler...you don't get uncomfortably full anymore like when they were babies. If she IS getting full, expressing a little is the way to go - not continuing to nurse him. For them, it's become a toxic relationship. It's not like that for all nursing toddlers.

Stacie M , i think that was the plan. For Tony to deal with it. Although I cant say 100% I feel like she deliberatly went in the room and woke him up and then complained about it. Hopefully they were able to get through this. I wish they did updates of the kids cause they are young adults now (if not, close to it)

I'm astonished Tony hasn't already left his "partner", I use this term very loosely. I was appalled at the way she handled the situation with Toby. She even spoke out loud about her best options. She literally verbalized the argument of going out and spending time with the adults, or herself checking on Toby, which she KNEW was a no no. I felt for her when she first arrived, but if you're not going to follow the protocol, LEAVE. I'm sure there are many parents willing to beg, borrow and steal, (figuratively speaking), to better the lives of their children. She, again, said out loud...I kinda hope I disturb him so he'll wake up and ask for it. She's not ready. That she came out and verbally attacked Tony for not being there is ludicrous. He didnt need to be, because Toby wasn't even crying! Ugh. It's so maddening. God and as many angels avaiable; HELP HER HELP HERSELF!

Jill Mccabe But Tony hasn’t really stepped up and helped her address what almost seems to be depression. She is overly attached to her youngest child and he just seems really checked out AND very quick to lay ALL their problems on HER. She’s not feeling wanted or loved or appreciated by her husband and he could work towards changing that dynamic...and, if he did, it may really go a long way towards helping her let go of her frantic grip on little Toby.

He was still a toddler. It’s so sad that she wasn’t enjoying the toddler stage with him, which is so much more fun than babyhood, because they can do so much more and communicate with you. She needed ongoing professional help in order to let go of the baby stage and embrace each stage of development with him. She did it with her older son, so it’s odd that she’s having so much trouble now.

Absolutely nothing wrong with breastfeeding a 2 year old. But feeding constantly throughout the night to the point where everyone is exhausted and demanding it whenever he wants is not a healthy breastfeeding relationship with a toddler. By then they are old Enough to develop some manners around it to save everyone’s sanity.

@@crystalburke150 , but don't you think after a certain age, it's more an emotional thing and NOT a nutritional one. He can eat solids at 2, and doesn't survive on breast milk anymore. I mean the kid is always pulling up her shirt and it's not right. I think breadt feeding after 2 is more for emotional like a pacifier and not for nutrition. For some reason some moms want to argue that breast feeding at any age is okay because of nutrition and thats just not true. When a kid is walking up to his mom and u doing her blouse, there is something not right about it. Let's at least Dmitry that this is purely an emotional exercise, not one of nutrition.

It isn't Tobie who's addicted to breastfeeding, it's his mother. She woke him up the first time. He wanted to be left alone. When she laid him down the second time, he still wanted to be left alone. & she shouldn't be that badly engorged, she's not a full time feeder. I breastfed my youngest until 22 months. My biggest problem was him trying to fight to get under my shirt & me not allowing it. She better grow up. My son is also my last of 2. Of course the problem isn't w/her baby, it's w/her.🍼😿😿

I have learned that breast feeding is a very personal thing and when to stop can be even more personal. I used to think if the child can walk up and lift your shirt and practically unhook your bra that should have been done and over long before. I have learned though that is not the way it is. Just because I would not be ok in the least with that doesnt mean it is wrong. However, when you are sabotaging the relationship with your husband and using your child as a pawn to do so you have a major issue! Maybe she wants out of the marriage and is using this as a means out? Maybe she feels she is being bullied into giving up feeding or maybe she feels that is the only thing she is good for.. There is more to this than we can possibly know. Hmm and she lied. It was clear in the video that she woke the child. Then she blames the husband for not hearing the kid cry because she shoved a boob in his mouth to stifle him. Does she not know she was on film?

I agree. However, the frequency of feedings was definitely not normal. In a normal breastfeeding relationship, the number of feedings drops off with time. 8 night feedings at 2 is definitely disordered. 2 - 3 feedings in 24 hours is far more typical.

Ashlie...well said. All the back and forth in the comment section...but people only focus on the nutritional needs and what daddy government says is ok. They miss the real issue ... breastfeeding has a HUGE impact on the emotional, mental, biological and spiritual needs of both mother and child. Of course, everything can have a positive/negative effect. But nothing is as visceral or long-lasting as breastfeeding. Alex will no doubt stop breastfeeding one day. But if her own issues aren't resolved, she will find another way to keep her codependency relationships going. And just objective observation...her excessively emotional needs are still not being met. This is commonly found in people who feel the need to contribute something but don't. Which, unfortunately, has become 90% of the public. Maybe Alex needs a hobby, lol
@tuesdaypatience
@tuesdaypatience 6 жыл бұрын
TheyLive YouSleep Alex's dependency on her son is not healthy - everyone watching can see that. However, the fact that her codependent behavior is manifested in her nursing relationship with Toby does not in any way reflect upon the relationships other mothers have with they nursing toddlers. My daughter who nursed until she was almost three just needed that comfort at sleep time. It certainly did NOT hold back her development or lead to any mental health issues. She's now 15yrs old, is in all advanced high school curriculum, is the HEALTHIEST human being I've ever met (we call her the bionic woman because she never gets sick and is taller and stronger than any of her family members), and is confident and independent. I rarely share my breastfeeding experiences with my three children because of the remarks throughout this comment section. People who think it's cute when a three year old has chocolate milk and/or pop in a bottle or still walking around with a pacifier or in diapers. Those are all man-made creations whereas breasts come as standard equipment on most females ❤️!!

Stacie...no offense... but in your haste to school me, you misread my post. Lol. It never said breastfeeding holds children back. It only stated the obvious..that breastfeeding is one of the most important connections between mother and child...beyond just the biological reasons. And like anything in this world, breastfeeding properly...or improperly...can have both positive or negative impacts. And although your experience has had a certain outcome...congrats btw :)...it's not a blanket cause and effect fact. There are millions of beautiful, strong, happy children who were not breastfed. And there are millions of sickly, poorly adjusted kids who were. The point of my first post...there's a lot more going on with Alex than just the breastfeeding. By using breastfeeding (a mental, physical, and spiritual connection) as her crutch, it can have a lasting impact that may not be so obvious. But taking something away doesn't always address the underlying emotional issues one has.

When Alex doesn't even have Toby in her arms she's full of anxiety, she paces or slinks around in the background. Her arms are mostly folded in front of her. That's a sign of anxiety. It's like all she can think of is "when do I get to hold Toby or how can I sneak some time alone with Toby? " It's like she's addicted to Toby on her breasts. He doesn't need her, she needs him. It's psychological. Breasts are sexual, they have many nerves in them (please don't take this the wrong way.) Her husband is not picking up on her anxiety because he's so angry. Go forward. Don't look back. They need to work together. If she starts to feel anxious, then go over and put your head on your husband's shoulder or just sit next to him and hold his hand. The same goes for him. Don't let her become so anxious. He could go over and put his arm around her or give her a hug or take her hand and go sit on the couch together. Toby is not her husband/lover he's her child and I think that's what's bothering me. She's an adult and a mother but with her the boundaries are blurred between who's her child and who's her husband. This is what is so confusing and unhealthy for the child. It's not about giving him milk, it's all about her needs.

I think breastfeeding is an amazing thing to do. I tried with mine but unfortunately wasn’t able and I was very disappointed. On the other hand if your child is on adult food, walk and talking and your child is grabbing at your breast and sticking their hand up your shirt practically mauling you for lack of a better word it’s too much and frankly weird. Not In a sexual way of course but it feels wrong to me. Your no longer doing it for nutrition and you can bond with your child in a meaningful way without them constantly grabbing at you like your a milk machine or a human pacifier. Kids that age need to learn to soothe themselves without doing that.

I think Toby’s mother is very lucky that she still has her husband around. She’s incredibly selfish. Edit...oh wow. She’s blatantly lying about her boobs being engorged. We’ve all been through that, you let them eventually go back to normal. She’s blaming her husband for what SHE did! She’s actually very pathetic.

Let’s get something straight: breastfeeding at 2yrs is NOT the problem. How the family is handling it IS. The child is allowed to throw tantrums, and no sleep training has been implemented. Food should be offered far more often and nursing offered less, because toddlers need more food than milk. Dad has NO business demanding mom wean.Instead he should be focusing on helping this child cope with his emotions and work on good eating habits. Mom is hiding behind nursing to hide her lack of discipline and sleep training. Worldwide nursing toddlers is common and encouraged but the tantrums are not normal. The parents have allowed them to take over and what should be a normal weaning process, is failing. And no, the child behavioral specialist is not qualified to say anything about appropriate ages for weaning a child. A lactation specialist , a pediatrician and a mom, are qualified to say when to wean. She is qualified to have input on how the family is handling training, and discipline. They do have issues, and are using breastfeeding as an excuse

These families are the most ignorant people I have ever seen! You put the child in bed, say go to sleep, leave and close the door. You do not let them out. Put a lock on it if necessary. Our boys learned quickly when to go to sleep. And if a child is old enough to ask or it - he is way beyond time to stop nursing. All of this coddling is ridiculous. Did no one ever have experience with babies and children? Unbelievable! And the mother going back in an wakening the child - grow up! Think of your child, not yourself!

There is NOTHING wrong with a healthy extended breastfeeding relationship between mother and child. That is NOT what is happening with the toddler and his mother in this video. To shame breastfeeding mothers based on the dysfunctional dynamic shown here is ignorant. The world health organisation guidelines for breastfeeding, recommends breastfeeding for 2 years and beyond. A child drinking their own mother's milk is not strange. It's bizarre that people get so upset about a 2 year old dribking milk from his own mother, but are likely adults who drink milk from another mammal. Now THAT is weird.

Jessica Evans Thank you thank you thank you. I'm getting so frustrated reading some of these comments. We've come so far since I had my oldest child 18yrs ago (and was told to breastfeed him in a BATHROOM STALL!), so it is very disheartening to read how many people still judge nursing mothers. Like somehow it's unnatural or weird - when the majority of humans on this planet nurse into toddlerhood. This story is NOT about a healthy breastfeeding relationship between a mother and toddler...this little boy has full control of his mother's body and attention and she is incredibly codependent and scared to let him grow up. I feel bad for her because I cried when my youngest (and I knew we weren't having any more children) self-weaned at a year. But if I had forced her to keep nursing, it would have been about ME - not her.

kole ivy sorry for tge confusion - I'm addressing the negative comments about extended breastfeeding that have been posted. I said in my initial comment, the dynamic in the video is dysfunctional and cannot be used as a baseline for all extended breastfeeding relationships.
@izzaduck8896
@izzaduck8896 6 жыл бұрын
Jessica Evans, As far as I understand it, the 'negative' comments about extended breastfeeding are related to the dysfunctional dynamic between the mother and son, in THIS video. Your interpretation of the comments as a 'general' criticism of nursing mothers and your comments... seem to indicate that you might be habouring feelings related to your own experience, many years ago! There's no comparison between what you experienced and Toby's Mum.
@tuesdaypatience
@tuesdaypatience 6 жыл бұрын
Izza Duck Actually there is a thread here discussing extended nursing in general - not about the dysfunctional relationship between mom Alex and little Toby. There were quite a few people saying they find it disgusting and not appropriate. I nursed one of my children until she was almost three years old. People think that's bizarre. In fact, one of the people in that thread actually said it would be better for a mother of a toddler to PUMP her milk and stick it in a bottle 🙄. So, yeah, Jessica has plenty reason to take this as more than just opinions regarding the situation in the video because it very clearly is NOT just about that situation.

You don't want to stop breastfeeding your kid? Fine. But don't send mixed messages to everyone, including your baby. Unbelievable. If you're engorged, express a little, but discomfort is going to happen when you stop breastfeeding. It's inevitable for most women. She just doesn't want to stop.
