Looking at the way all those “extra” components are added to improve dynamics, it is also a way to differentiate within the product line. Start with basics that are good enough and then add/exchange parts to climb the model range towards sportiness and/or comfort

The "shear plates / aero covers" are interesting, as it is not normal to use one component for both purposes. It was good to show where they were fastened and the large fasteners implying their structural function; it would have been even better to have held one up to the car to show it.

I like how well made it is. Even the cross bracing is warm dip galvanised, not the usual thin black paint. The brake dust plates also. Driveshafts painted. Everything aluminium and not pressed steel like a Kia.

This model is not available in Canada yet, but the BMW Canada website allows configuration and reservation. The base price of an i5 M60 xDrive Sedan here is CAD$98,735. It had better be well-built...

@@samin90 I am offered only reservation on the BMW Canada website, but that may be responding to province - many EVs are only available in some provinces (generally Quebec, BC, and Ontario).

Lol!!!! Rear wheel steering is literally the same hardware and some bigger vehicles like Mercedes trucks have up to 3 steering axles.

Mercedes provides rear steer since years! Their EVs have 10.6° rear steer angle!

It's not "indicative" of vehicles that you have seen in the past; it is "typical" of them. "Indicative" would mean that a feature indicates something... such as a suspension design which indicates a compromise toward ride quality (rather than other characteristics such as low cost).

Boy, it would be soooo nice if you could spend 90 seconds introduce the vehicle. Like, price, market niche, motive power, history, and why you're doing this analysis, and what you're going to cover. If you expect to cater to engineers only who aren't interested why you're doing this, then I understand and I'll unsubscribe. Hey, I'm sure you're all really nice guys, but this is just winging it.

Thanks for the great review....Advanced designs and expensive manufacturing for a vehicle that extremely unlikely to mechanically/electrically last more than 120k miles / 200.000km. typical BMW waste of resources, to be junked early due to excessive repair costs..

8 years, 100k warranty and 70 % of this cars are leased for the first 3 years. If i lease something i used it "the right way". I don't care who is the next owner.

@@giacomu1That warranty is only for the EV components and is required by US law for all EVs/PHEVs. Everything else is the same standard warranty as most cars.

MUNRO - one important NOTE. BMW i5 is unable to protect passengers , falling off a 250 foot cliff @ Devils Slide. unlike a TESLA. BTW - TESLA just released their Q1 2024 Autopilot SAFETY data.

Way to many parts. It increases cost and doesn’t bring any value (to the customer or or BMW). As for all the bracing - any proof that it’s actually more rigid than a one piece giga casting? From all I’ve seen the giga casting is super rigid especially given lack of fasteners and being one part…

BMW is loosing Marketshare to TESLA. Tesla has unassailable LEAD over BMW & others. the BMW i5 M60 is a very cheaply made car , built on a Horse & Buggy platform.

These engineering experts pointed out that it is less costly in terms of capital investment in huge, high-tonnage casting machines. These BMWs don't sell in the high volumes that Tesla 3 and Y do, and S and X still don't use gigacastings; probably for the same reason.

@@jamesengland7461 true, cost of capital is an issue, especially if it isn't even sure BMW is going to be around for the the ROI time, in that way hundreds of components and lots of work elaborating and assembling them will make sure you stay expensive and low volume ...

It was entertaining to hear how many excuses were made for BMW on their inferior engineering here. Overly costly, overly heavy, overly complex in terms of aero, and just not as well executed as Tesla does it. German marketing has really pulled the wool over people's eyes. They are no longer the best engineers...
