I used Xylene to degrade the anti-mildew coating
hardboard from Home Depot to serve as the dry erase board. It isn't as good as a dry erase board but for the price it works good enough in my book. www.homedepot.com/p/EUCATILE-3...
I used sanded pine plywood because it seems to be a better quality than the sheathing grad plywood: www.homedepot.com/p/Pine-Plywo...
UPDATE: I have eliminated the hooks at the baseboard. Instead, I just tied an extra loop that I also hook on the knob on the ends of the bed.

The thing I like BEST about this video is the abundant use of speeding it up. I've watched so many other videos where they play it at regular speed and it drives me nuts! SO, THANKS!

I'm 84, and I'm still learning new DIY ideas to make my life easier. This is just what I need in my sewing room. I'll add the hinge that Angela suggested a year ago, and I'll put a beautiful fabric cover over it. My grandson loves the bed, so he'll love this when he visits me. By the way, I plan to discard the box spring. Yes, I can build the box. Love it. Thank you!

I think if you put the mattress Inside the Box instead of on top of the box you made and then run a two-by-four along the wall and attach the box with hinges then all you would have to do is fold the bed down with some fold out legs and that would eliminate all the strings. when the box is folded back up against the wall underneath the bed could have a pretty picture or something

Makercise, great concept! I would have built a frame attached to the wall to eliminate the ropes-a hazard if you have any children or pets! When you put the dry erase board inside the bed frame I thought it was a great idea, maybe once you make a more permanent frame you could make the bottom portion into a cupboard to store the linens and the feet! Great start to a great concept!

Cynthia, Thanks I appreciate your comment. I do indeed want to make my parents proud. :) I am contemplating making a more detailed set of pdf plans, and I'd appreciate some additional feedback about what kind of details would make you more likely to attempt this project. For instance, I used a table saw, air nailer, and drill press. These tools make the job faster, but the project could be completed with a hand held drill, circular saw, and ratchet straps. With which of these tools would you be comfortable? What types of details would make you more likely to attempt this project?

Dude I really like your design. Murphy bed, potato, potato why these people get stuck on stupid I will never know. I need to make one of these to clear up space to be able to play and record music in my room. As well as have a small desk and office area for my art and computer graphics. I don't have much money and looks mean nothing to me, it's all about practicality for me and I think I can build this, however I might need some help. Thanks for sharing this I have just watched about 6 or 7 videos on making a wall bed and This is the best yet. I'm very impressed with your thought process and if you ever make PDF plans I would love a copy. It would make this project easier. Thank you...

pinktree5 pinktree5 GREAT comment! I want to add that he did this in 2015, B4 the influx of Murphy Bed videos. He wanted something like a MB, came up with this, built it, & shared it with us. I agree he can call it whatever he wants. Look up " Fractal Pattern " on UTube & U will find the Best DIY'rs in the world NOT making fractal patterns (a VERY specific thing). But, their "Lichtenberg figures" are awesome so they too can call 'em what they want. Anyway I had to reply to you because all the negative comments here are making my stomach hurt. I picture myself going into a museum or even a retail store & just pointing out all the stuff I would never buy to everybody in the place & stating opinion like they are facts. I'd say things like 'why is this even available in yellow? EVERY ONE knowis that's the worse color ever" & "speaking of yellow that 83million dollar Monet painting sucked... Claude & Pierre needed their eyes checked" etc etc. Thanks for letting me rant

This is my project for the weekend. I don't think I'm going this direction, because I want to put shelves to the sides, but this was a creative way to keep the floor space open. I need to get an extra bed together before JP shows up from England. Like you it will be used very occasionally, and I could use some extra storage area on the sides. So a long over due project is about to begin. Like you though, I have no desire to spend $300 on hardware. With wood and mattress I'd be approaching $700 easily.

That was really cool. I'm planning to switch to a Van life in 2022 and I have been researching different ways to multitask furniture options for tiny living. I found a box shelf layered system that I would like to add to my future van, but I can't figure out how they keep the boxes from not falling on the one beneath it. I found a swivel mechanism that would work. I just can't seem to find what locks it into place. Do you have any idea or can this item be a future project for you to create? I plan to stack 8 rectangle boxes on a pole bolted to the ceiling or wall down to the floor of the van. The purpose of this system is to store my clothing and yet keep it hidden.

Subscribed. I like your idea for this one. The matress clamps less so. Seems they would impinge on putting a fitted sheet on and perhaps rip the matress/sheets. Were the bed mounted vertically perhaps a headboard might have held the mattress alternatively the PVC legs with end caps attached may have been slotted tightly into holes in a bottom rail and used to support bed and mattress with only a small catch used to safely attach the bed at the top. I had our Murphy Bed (horizontal single bed size made into a wall unit, with TV space, storage shelves and computer desk. Works well. Sadly the ma-in-law uses it too often!!!

Lol sounds like your handiness brings problems. Fortunately I get along with my in laws. The clamps are an aspect of the design I don't like either. Overall I have gotten lots of use out of the bed. I really like your ideas and welcome to the channel!
@shirleywilson3706
@shirleywilson3706 7 жыл бұрын
Garry Hoddinott instead of clamping the mattress why not use a bolt/eye hook and bungee cord to hold the mattress? Also you could set the mattress inside, use plywood for outside bottom half with your dryerase material laid out as you have above it. Instead of pvc pipe for legs you could've used solid wood that could have been designed to slide out and lock in place. You more or less just got a basic plan that others can add their own ideas to so that they can make something that's more visually pleasing to the eye.

I hate comments like this. It's a neat build and nothing I couldn't do with the tools in my shop I've spent less than $300 on. Quit crapping on the work people do because you're ignorant of what it takes to make it happen. Good quality used tools are out there if you're willing to look for them and produce great results if you exeecise a little extra care and patience using them. I've seen people make crap cuts using $500 saws and great cuts with $75 saws. It's a poor craftsman who blames his tools.

@Makercise
@Makercise 8 жыл бұрын
+S Franco The PVC legs in particular seem like the work well. Generally, I have lowered and hung the bed about 12 times in the last 5 months for guests. It is pretty slick. I don't use the dry erase board as much as I thought, but mostly because the space is under some slow construction to turn into an office/project space. The only item I don't like are the clamps for the mattress which occasionally need reclamping. Maybe my guest are restless or very active sleepers? One improvement you should consider is eliminating the hooks at the baseboard. It is more convenient and less work to hook both ends of the rope on the knobs at the end of the bed.

The article www.makercise.com/how-to-make-a-low-cost-murphy-bed/ has the details. I recommend taking a dry erase marker with you when material shopping. There may be a alternative choice available in your locality, but watch out of the beading effect.
