Murray Gold's References to Other Doctor Who Themes

For those wanting to skip the background info and primer on the parts of the Doctor Who theme, the actual comparison/analysis starts at 1:24.
If you're like me, Murray's arrangements of the Doctor Who theme are fascinating for the way they take inspiration from all sorts of random past versions while putting a new twist on them. This video will illustrate some of the official and unofficial themes that (in my opinion) Murray took inspiration from when creating his arrangements for the new series.
As mentioned in the video, this isn't in any way a criticism of Murray's themes or his using others for inspiration.
If people find this interesting, I'll do similar comparisons with Murray's incidental music! I'll try and think of a more visually interesting presentation than simple text for next time, though this is the most easily accessible way of presenting the information!

Fascinating analysis. Thank you! Yes, all composers are influenced by other folks' music. That's what makes music so wonderful - that other people can take a piece and interpret it their own way. I'd like to see you do an analysis of some of the character themes that have been done in the past with both the original series and the new series.

i’ve always thought “The Cybermen” track from 2006 sounds like it was influenced by the 1966 incidental music for the Cybermen in “The Tenth Planet”

To me it’s sort of a mix of the original 66 theme and the 80’s Cybermen theme.

To my ear anyway, the Melody 1 in his 2014 theme is very similar to the more screechy melody from his 2010 Doctor Who Live arrangement.

Ah, now to me the Melody 1 from the 2010 Live theme sounds the same as the melody played live during the 2013 Proms Theme. Wouldn't be surprised if it was the same synthesiser! You did make me go back and have another listen to that 2010 Live theme though, and I noticed that it used the Dominic Glynn middle eight three years before the 2013/Proms one! Wish I'd remembered and put that in the video...

The Series Four closing theme also uses the Glynn middle eight (which I've always loved), though it fairly fast and easy to miss.

when using the snippet of the series 2 closing theme with comparing it to Geoff love how many layers did you take off to get the train whistle sound. because I really like the way it sounds and would love to hear a full mix like this 3:36-3:43

About the beginning of the 2010 opening theme, what do you think influenced that?

I don't know if there were any direct influences on it as such. Murray was (to my knowledge) the first to put a brass countermelody over the bassline intro of the theme - beginning in Series One and, obviously, rearranging it in Series Five. The Blue Peter Proms theme also did it; but that was after Murray's Series One theme, and so I suspect that Murray influenced it rather than the other way around. There's a definitely Danny Elfman-vibe to the 2010 theme opening, but I'll do some investigating and see if it's a reference to anything specific out there!
