Davis Cup by BNP Paribas is the largest annual international team competition in world sport. This prestigious event, which is one of the cornerstones of the tennis calendar, gives players the chance to represent their country in an otherwise individual sport.
Founded by Dwight Davis in 1900, Davis Cup began as a challenge match between USA and British Isles, which was held at the Longwood Cricket Club in Boston.
Davis himself played in the inaugural Davis Cup tie, steering his country to the first of many title victories. USA has won the Davis Cup 32 times - more than any other nation.

Really good doubles match, such a shame it doesn't get anywhere near as much coverage as singles because quite often it can be much more exciting, definitely more fast paced!

that's what I think. I have even wondered if DC should be 2 doubles & 3 singles would make it a much more balanced team event and take the pressure of the top singles players.

Sara Louise Problem with that is the fact that each team usually only contains one doubles pairing, and if they did increase the number of doubles matches they would probably have to increase the number of players on the team, as there's no point in the same two doubles pairs playing each other twice. The point of having just one doubles match is that there's usually only one doubles team per squad, any more and they'd have to have more than one doubles pairing. I think how it works now, as it has done for over 100 years, works absolutely fine, and the system means that the doubles rubber is usually the most crucial. There's only one doubles match, but it certainly carries as much importance as the singles! For example if one team has one top 5 singles player, but the other only no. 96 in the world, the former is likely to win both singles matches, but the latter is likely to lose both of his (like against France, where Murray won both, but Ward lost his first) meaning that they also need a strong doubles pairing to consolidate their one strong singles player. Britain I think is a prime example of this, Murray is one of the best in the world, however in terms of secondary singles players they don't have many options apart from James Ward and Kyle Edmund, both of whom are floating around the top 100. Fortunately for Britain, they have a good roster of doubles players, Jamie Murray, Dom Inglot, Jonny Marray, Colin Fleming, Andy Murray as well, all have the ability to trouble any doubles pairing, especially in a competition like Davis Cup where they're playing for so much more than progression in a tournament, it's also about team spirit and national pride, qualities that the British team possess in abundance!
