Cali emcee Murs presents the Hobostewd-directed music video for "Animal Style", the Embassy-produced track from his recent BluRoc release Love & Rockets Volume 1: The Transformation. "Animal Style is a song I did for many reasons," Murs explains. "The first was to be an advocate for people close to me who are out, and those who have yet to come out. It's also a love song, which is nothing new for me. But with this one I wanted to challenge the listener to ask themselves: Is the love shared by two people of the same gender, really that different than the love I have for my partner of the opposite sex? And finally, I just felt it was crucial for some of us in the hip hop community to speak up on the issues of teen suicide, bullying, and the overall anti-homosexual sentiment that exist within hip hop culture. I felt so strongly about these issues and this song that I had to do a video that would command some attention, even if it makes some viewers uncomfortable. Even if it came at the cost of my own comfort."

You can't sit there and say you have nothing against gay people and then say that they should keep their life on the DL. This song shows us how that is a destructive type of mentality that shouldn't be accepted. Props to MURS for standing up for what he believes in regardless of the homophobic roots hip hop was founded on. This is social evolution.
@Artificial_sanity
@Artificial_sanity 4 жыл бұрын
HipHop was not founded on 'homophobic roots' The founder of Zulu nation Affrika Bambaata hinself was gay, and molested thousands of young boys. Do your research. If anything Hiphop was founded on afrocentricity. Btw i have nothing against same-sex love, just stating some history.

@@Artificial_sanity pretty sure most of the street kids that birthed hip hop didn't give a shit about what a zulu king did 200 years before them. Saying italians can't be homophobic because several roman emperors were gay is as irrelevant to what you are saying.

It astounds me that Murs took the extra mile in this video, considering his audience on KZfaq and the music genre in general. Gay rapping is not usually accepted in that community, and the entire homophobia/anti-gay banter is still a problem in this country. Regardless, I admire how brave Murs was taking this sort of approach on the subject and making it so much more personal, despite the fact that he's straight. I guess most people don't realize the entire point of this video and song, and instead dismiss it as wrong or "gay" just because of his actions and intention. It's a great and powerful song, it just has to be taken in without instantaneous disapproval and hate for it being a "gay song." I'm glad that rap is starting to take on deep and personal subjects such as this. It makes me appreciate the genre more. So thanks, Murs. Thanks for giving me something to think about.

Murs was interviewed for the bestselling book series *HOW TO RAP* and *HOW TO RAP2*, and shared his rapping techniques. Here he talks about gangsta rap. "No one saw gangsta rap coming. They told them they were crazy: You’re gonna curse on a record and it’s gonna get played? Yeah, right! And now everything on the radio [is like that]. They changed the world [and] you couldn’t have told anyone. . . . And I think that’s the beauty of hip-hop-you’ll never see it coming, whatever it is."

Why does one need to compare? Murs is a huge fan of Macklemore. Both songs are extremely important. One can like both. One can think both have an extremely important message. Macklemores is a little more political where this song is more about the consequences of hiding who you are and how it eats at you. Both songs are brilliant and brave.
@peetopato7813

The argument would be, unfortunately, that Murs is Black and Macklemore is White. Murs shares a bleak narrative of the reality of the struggle from the POV of an oppressed person. Macklemore approaches it as an outsider trying to help an oppressed group via raising awareness. It's pretty much the rap version of White Man's Burden. Macklemore is "this is how it should be," while Murs is "well, this is how it is."

Verse 1] Fresh out of high school, glad cause he hated it Everybody in the senior class'll call him gay but it It never bothered him, his name Johnathan Best friend Julie, she was cool, she went to prom with him The principal said prom was no place for a queer couple If he showed up with a boy then it'd be real trouble Empty threats, but what really got to him Is that his boyfriend didn't wanna go to prom with him Boyfriend Roderick, kept the secret closeted Scared to come out into this world of zero tolerance Kinda popular, played a lot of politics Johnathan was book smart, just received a scholarship Off to college, wanted Roderick to follow him He see him in the halls but Rod would never acknowledge him Away from school though, he was so affectionate John had a good thing, no use in upsetting it Besides in college everything would be different Everyone is educated, no one would be tripping, huh He had it all figured out Plus his parents were excited just to get him out the house So they bought him a ticket, even bought one for Roderick Said to leave the end of summer, they would pay for all of it So excited on his way to work at In-N-Out End of his shift, he drove straight up to Roderick's house He hopped out, saw him with his crew He walked right up, he was ready to share the news It had been a few days, he forgot how much he missed him So excited that he moved in and kissed him Roderick dissed him, threw him to the floor He said, "you faggot! What'd you have to do that for?" Looked at his homies, "You know I'm not gay" They just shook their heads, turned and walked away ("Fuck. Fuck's wrong with you?") Now he's screaming at Johnathan, what the hell was wrong with him John said, "Okay, it's over? Let's be honest then They never knew the real you, they not your real friends" He drove away and vowed to never speak to him again It had been a few weeks Before John left for college, he thought that they should speak Scared to do it, for fear of rejection But either way, he knew the world would never accept him [Interlude] (Dear America, when you tell gay Americans that they can't serve their country openly or marry the person that they love, you're telling that to kids too.) [Verse 2] Roderick was seventeen, in and out of jail since ten Never knew his father or spent time with any other men He started running in them circles with the hustlers Gangbanging, dope slanging, had some loyal customers Locked him up at a very young age Found religion and it ended all his criminal ways He also found his first boyfriend when he was locked up Came home conflicted so he really didn't talk much Felt beginnings of a double life The chaplain back in juve used to tell him that it wasn't right His bond with God was so strong That was until he met John And it felt so perfect But suffering eternal damnation, was it worth it? He still had to see him It had been two years, he knew that he could never leave him So he lived in fear of God's wrath The preacher said God loves us all except fags And that made him so mad he started packing his bags Said he'd run away with John until it went all bad [Interlude] [Verse 3] The big incident John slipped in front of his friends and started kissing him Now everything was different He shut him out, never thought about forgiving him Until he got that text John wanted to meet up the day after next They met at In-N-Out, on his dinner break But he was so mad that he couldn't look him in the face Soon as he spoke, they both started crying Said he missed him so much, he felt like he was dying John said, "I can't describe how much I missed you" That's when Roderick pulled his pistol He shot him right between the eyes Then turned it on hisself cause he refused to live a lie Suicide was against his beliefs But knew it was the only way they'd ever find peace

Bryce Thompson no. i personally do not think we need this. more like, we need to start all over again. start teaching people that we should NOT care who other person sleeps with. and not that people shouldn´t be afraid to announce their different sexual orientation to the whole world. i mean, like it is nowadays is something like "i´m gay/bi/trans. attention on me" but what i want future to be "be who you are. people don´t give a flying fuck."
