Muscle Car of the Week Video Episode # 111: 1971 Dodge Charger R/T 426 Hemi Pilot Car
www.musclecaroftheweek.com/forum - There are many outstanding "Firsts" and "Lasts" in the Brothers Collection, but this car is a "First" twice, and a "Last" Once! This is the very first 1971 Dodge Charger Hemi, which is also the first year for the new body style, and the last year for the 426 Hemi engine! Being the pilot car, this one was not supposed to be sold to the public, as there are certain elements of the car that are not production ready. However, it made it our of the factory alive, and was even sold new a Mr. Norm's Grand Spaulding Dodge in Chicago. It's a very cool story, and an even cooler car.

As if it being a pilot car isn't enough, it's also a Mr. Norms car? WOW! Another over the top car and a fantastic video. It's only right that you run these cars for your viewers! Thanks for the trip back in time!!!

The third gen. Chargers never get any love, so I was so glad to see this video. Everyone wants the second gens., and don't get me wrong, they're pretty amazing, but I have a '72 Charger and I never have anyone bash it for not being a "coke bottle" body style.

Jonathan Cohen. I mean by 1971 the game was almost over for muscle cars with increased insurance costs for muscle cars and the gas crisis of the 70s didn't help.

@@chargermaster586 Maybe but we were still building them Take the 383 errrr 400 and work it in a nice 72 or 73 SE CHARGER and you had alot of fun at the track and street. Had a friend that had a gorgeous 71 slapstick car with a mildly built 440 6 pack, 410s and a shift kit he would run high 11s in that heavy good looking beast all day long. Him and another guy ( 73 Challenger) used to grudge all the time The guy in the charger told and showed everyone what he had but the guy with the challenger said it was a mildly built 383. Some of us knew better by listening to it but eventually after what must have been 50 races at great lakes dragaway and racing on Archer ave in Chicago He showed us what we knew. All those years it was a 6 pack running a 66 Hemi Engine in that Challenger I swear those 2 must have gone as close to 25-25 as you can get. Both ran high 11s.

When I was younger in the late 70's a friend's mother had a 383 or 440 version (I never found out Which) and she would let him take it for a spin once in a while. It was ridiculously fast. Scary and Mark was a very aggressive driver. He liked to scare people.

I bought a 71 R/T around 78, it was a sublime green one with the slap-stick auto, 440 Magnum. It had been modded by moon-shiners to switch to alch. if needed and the engine was back further into the fire wall. traded it later as it was not dependable to start

I think that I remember seeing pictures and reading the article about the 1971 Challenger R/T pilot car that was sold, the publisher of the Mopar magazine eventually bought the car and showcased it in the magazine! It had all of the available options including the tape deck and the sunroof, and it was Go Mango, which wasn't even offered in 1971, with white stripes, top and interior! That was decades ago but I still remember it! I forget the actual magazine but I remember the guys name Tom Shaw because of Tommy Shaw from Styx! It was either the pilot car or the first 1971 Hemi Challenger R/T but it was supposedly an original Go Mango!

nice to know this beautiful machine didn't get crushed. the only thing that could make a red and black Hemi Charger any cooler is if it were second gen (68-70), but this body style is still beautiful enough for me to spend a couple months building a lime green model with a 440. it's actually the favorite of my collection.

I loved the 71-74 chargers. The 71 for the brute power and 72-74 were comfortable and you could still get a few big blocks including but certainly not limited to the 1973 SE 400. IF YOU BUILT IT RIGHT, NOT CRAZY JUST RIGHT YOU COULD GET THAT BEAUTIFUL HEAVY SLED DOWN THE TRACK IN THE LOW 13s with a slap stick auto and the right gearing. How do i know.. I owned a 1972 with a 70 440 and a beautiful 1973 with a 400. If you equipped them right, nice paint and interior ( the SE WAS GREAT) they were very nice street cars still We DO NOT TALK ABOUT 1975

Great video. I disagree with not fixing the non-working idiosyncrasies though. As long as they are well documented, and reversible, I see nothing wrong with making them functional. A followup video with more information on these items would be great.

Dodge/chrysler/plymoth pulled a fast one in the horsepower/torque ratings for 71, its not possible for the engine to produce the same horsepower and torque ratings in both gross and net ratings methods, they may not have changed the mechanicals, but the numbers have to be different dont care what engine or make, gross and net power cannot be the same.
