Il Museo di San Martino si trova all’interno dell’antica Certosa, in posizione elevata rispetto al centro cittadino.
Per la sua realizzazione, nel 1325, fu chiamato l’architetto senese Tino di Camaino. Nell’arco di cinque secoli la Certosa fu interessata da costanti rinnovamenti, nel 1581 l'architetto Giovanni Antonio Dosio trasforma il severo aspetto gotico nell'attuale preziosa e raffinata veste barocca. Nel 1623 inizia la collaborazione con l'architetto Cosimo Fanzago, che lascia il segno inconfondibile della sua prepotente personalità, la sua opera si caratterizza per una straordinaria attività decorativa (suo è anche lo spettacolare pavimento della chiesa).
Appena entrati nell’ampio cortile si vede immediatamente la facciata esterna della chiesa, una specie di scrigno della pittura e della scultura napoletana del ‘600 e ‘700. Le cappelle sono ricoperte da splendide tarsie marmoree. La volta venne dipinta da Giovanni Lanfranco. Nel 1754 nella cappella di San Martino, Giuseppe Sanmartino realizza la Fortezza, la Carità e i quattro gruppi di cherubini. Una vivace balaustra di marmo, pietre preziose e bronzo dorato precede la zona del presbiterio. L’altare maggiore è in legno dorato e dipinto come se fosse marmo. Nel coro, le grandi tele alle pareti sono dei più importanti artisti del XVI secolo, tra cui: Guido Reni e Jusepe de Ribera. Gli armadi in noce della sagrestia monumentale sono rivestiti di tarsie lignee ad opera di artisti fiamminghi e napoletani.
Si possono ammirare due chiostri: il più piccolo (dei Procuratori) ha doppie arcate grigie e bianche; il “Chiostro Grande” si apre alla luce che crea un gioco di chiaroscuri, è occupato da aiuole con al centro il pozzo, in un angolo vi è il cimitero dei frati.
Il complesso è molto grande ed ospita varie sezioni e opere di diverso genere.
Si possono vedere alcune antiche carrozze reali; il “Quarto del priore”: è l’appartamento privato del priore della Certosa, in cui sono presenti preziosi affreschi, pavimenti maiolicati settecenteschi e una galleria di dipinti; si possono ammirare due importanti sculture di Pietro Bernini (padre del più famoso Gian Lorenzo).
Dalle terrazze è possibile ammirare uno splendido panorama del Golfo di Napoli e della città.

The San Martino Museum is located inside the ancient Certosa, in an elevated position with respect to the city centre.
For its construction, in 1325, the Sienese architect Tino di Camaino was called. Over the course of five centuries the Certosa underwent constant renovations, in 1581 the architect Giovanni Antonio Dosio transformed the severe Gothic aspect into the current precious and refined Baroque guise. In 1623 he began collaborating with the architect Cosimo Fanzago, who left the unmistakable mark of his overbearing personality, his work is characterized by an extraordinary decorative activity (his is also the spectacular floor of the church).
As soon as you enter the large courtyard, you immediately see the external façade of the church, a sort of treasure chest of Neapolitan painting and sculpture of the 17th and 18th centuries. The chapels are covered with splendid marble inlays. The vault was painted by Giovanni Lanfranco. In 1754 in the chapel of San Martino, Giuseppe Sanmartino created the Fortress, the Charity and the four groups of cherubs. A lively balustrade of marble, precious stones and gilded bronze precedes the presbytery area. The main altar is in gilded wood and painted as if it were marble. In the choir, the large canvases on the walls are by the most important artists of the 16th century, including: Guido Reni and Jusepe de Ribera. The walnut wardrobes of the monumental sacristy are covered with wooden inlays by Flemish and Neapolitan artists.
Two cloisters can be admired: the smaller one (of the Procurators) has gray and white double arches; the "Chiostro Grande" opens to the light which creates a play of chiaroscuro, is occupied by flowerbeds with the well in the centre, in a corner there is the cemetery of the friars.
The complex is very large and houses various sections and works of different genres.
Some ancient royal carriages can be seen; the "Quarto del priore": it is the private apartment of the prior of the Certosa, in which there are precious frescoes, eighteenth-century majolica floors and a gallery of paintings; you can admire two important sculptures by Pietro Bernini (father of the more famous Gian Lorenzo).
From the terraces it is possible to admire a splendid panorama of the Gulf of Naples and of the city.
