Mushroom Hunting - Spring King Hunting Secrets. In this video I provide tips and advice for beginners and veteran mushroom hunters on how to find Spring King mushrooms. We covered many miles and elevations to finally find Spring Kings fruiting below the snowline.
I show you where to look, what to look for, what other indicator species pop up at the same time as Spring Kings, tree identification, etc., in hopes these tips will help you find your own morels. These mushrooms grow throughout the PNW Cascades from May through June, are easy to identify and are amazingly delicious.

Sometimes, part of a king may be bug free, like the stem or the cap. Part of a king is better than no king.

So cool! Your videos always want to make me try again even when I come home empty handed. Do you think there are any morels at this point in the year? (Other than the old one you found)

Thank you for your comments and question. There are still some morels up there. One of my friends found some blondes a few days ago. However, morels are winding down. Kings are still popping above 4,000’ on south and east facing slopes. And, it’s beautiful and way cooler up there now! Happy hunting!

Killer finds! Excited to get out there. I’ve read these are mostly on the east side of the cascades, would you recommend the west side at all?

From what I've been told and from some experience, mixed fir and pine forests are the place to be for Spring Kings. If you can find one of those on the west side you might have some luck but they are certainly more common east.

In the Fall, I find them on the west side, but the spring kings, I’ve only found them on the east and south side of the cascades.

What do you use to mark your GPS coordinates while foraging? is it an app on your phone or a standalone GPS device?

I use OnX Hunt. It’s an $39 per year phone app and it’s awesome. I also have a Garmin 64st GPS but rarely user it anymore because OnX is so much better.
