It took nothing less than a royal funeral to bring a measure of popularity to this guy--the Song for Athene was played at the service for Princess Diana. It's a pretty moment of sensitive choral writing, but Tavener's larger works are junk: pretentious, monotonous essays in pseudo-spirituality. Happily, they seem to have vanished since his passing in 2013. Here's hoping they stay that way.
