If you listen to her vibrato, for example, you'll hear her vary the tempo of it and also the interval to suit the moment. She also does that inhaled scream note that gives me goosebumps. That look you had at the last phrase in the song when she used that haunting vibrato reminds me very much of how I felt/feel when I first encountered AJ, and how I feel in general when I listen to her. AJ presents me with a real existential crisis. There is no explanation for how this child was gifted with so much talent, spirit, grace, and empathy. This was my very first encounter with Angelina, about two and a half years ago... not a reaction video but the original, suggested by KZfaq after I had watched some videos of the great Haley Reinhart and other Jazz... - I had not heard her NGTs, her AGTs, nothing, no background information whatsoever, just a random click because I knew the song, and the b/w thumbnail looked somehow interesting... was not expecting anything and I was in a state of shock and disbelieve after watching the video, to me it seemed impossible any little girl could sing like this, not only the tone of her voice, the vibrato, the control and different colors, but even more how she channelled the lyrical content which at that age she shouldn't have any clue about... I remember seeing this the day after it was released in 2016. (It was recorded in 2015). I had been following her since NGT, and enjoyed the few videos that was on KZfaq. As a blues lover, I knew about Screaming Jay, enjoyed his crazy, theatrical style., but also recognized how great a singer he actually was behind the "mask". I knew about a lot of covers of this song, all of them lacked the rawness, desperation and emotions that Screaming Jay had in his version. From the first note I was completely lost. The band is fantastic, her voice with all the emotions, the nuances and effects are unbelievable, every second of the song is perfect. I have listened to this song probably more than a thousand times since then, will never get tired of it. For me the perfect cover of this song. Not of her age, but of any age. Even with her amazing growth in her voice since then, I doubt she could ever sing this song with so much emotion ever again.

It’s presumptuous to try to tell a musician why this is so good, but I’ll try anyway. Aside from the insane vocal control by a nine year old, her blues timing is just immaculate. You’ll see again and again that Angelina rides the beat so effortlessly and perfectly in many different genres. She is always in control of the session, even with live bands behind her. And she brings authenticity to whatever style she is singing. She’s not showing off here-she’s respecting the genre. And how you got lost in the performance? That’s happens all the time with Angelina. She starts singing and has your complete attention. Sometimes it’s stunning like today’s, sometimes it’s just beautiful, sometimes it’s mesmerizing. One slight quibble with your comments: there are several of her young performances where Angelina is definitely channeling some of the greats, like Billie Holiday or Ella Fitzgerald. But on this one, it’s her own arrangement that’s clearly paying respect to Screamin Jay Hawkins, but she’s not channeling his original.

Angelina is the real deal, it comes from years of listening and understanding the core of jazz and blues. And she has the voice to match her musical ability. Truly a phenom :)

I love this performance so much. As they say AJ don't play. We get the most stunning, amazing performance of a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. Angelina is a masterful practitioner of lyrical interpretation, she plays with the timing, toys with nuance almost whimsically because she CAN!! Here, she sings fiercely, with total abandon, completely in control of what's coming next.. almost as she's spontaneously pulling out one of the many vocal ornaments she OWNS.. A couple of years ago, I watched this video and was blown away!. Her candle held a photo of "Screaming" Jay Hawkins, so I searched for him and found him here on You Tube, both a performance video and a recording of him singing this song. The arrangement made by Angelina Jordan was based on his original 1956. You should at least listen to the recording (not the performance video) he did. If you compare it to what Angelina has done with it, you will be informed about her musicality. Your reaction was instructive, so I subscribed. Now you know a Norwegian secret.... He wrote and performed it in 1956 and Angelina based her performance on the original, although she did make some subtle alterations to both lyrics and melody. As you continue your journey of discovering Angelina, you will come to realise that she does her own arrangements of most of the cover songs she sings. The differences may not be immediately discernible on first listening to them, but they are there. There may be a subtle change in tempo or tone, or more inflexion on some words, or a phrase may differ in pitch from the original. The amount of control that Angelina has over her voice cannot be measured. She never hurries a song. She sings in such a way that the emotions in the lyrics are felt by the listener. Lastly, did you notice how the "performing" Angelina, singing at a level of maturity far beyond her years, suddenly became a 9-year-old child almost instantaneously once she finished singing.

And - she also arranged this herself! As young as she is here - in order to better understand her musical roots, I highly recommend that you go back to all 4 of her Norway Got Talent performances (Gloomy Sunday, I'm A Fool To Want You, Bang Bang & Summertime) - at ages 7-8. And why did she go on NGT at age 7? (Well - she actually wanted to go on that talent show earlier, but the minimum age was 7. :) IMHO - what differentiates Angelina from other singers, is that she has been blessed by GOD with not only a beautiful voice, but also with the ability to emote the essence of each song she sings direct to our hearts & souls allowing us to also deeply FEEL her music as it flows through her. The picture on the candle is Screaming Jay Hawkins, the original writer. The writing is her "Wishes" for changes to the arrangement given to the band leader.

She mght be young here (a few months past her 9th birthday), but she was already quite a "veteran" at this point: she started singing at 1½, sang for family and friends as she grew up, was already recording studio vocals at 6 or 7, started singing in front of general audiences at 7 (AFAIK), auditioned for Norway's edition of the _Got Talent_ franchise (called _Norske Talenter_ ) just before turning 8, went viral online with that audition (by which point she was 8) leading to coverage by major news outlets around the world before she even sang in the semifinals, won that competition handily, and went on to perform for thousands of people live (including the Prime Minister of Norway and her cabinet and, separately, that year's Nobel Peace Prize winners Malala Yousafzai and Kailash Satyarthi) and for millions of people on TV, all the while raising (the equivalent of) millions of dollars for children's charities. And then she turned 9.

About 3-1/2 years ago, this video was my very first introduction to Angelina, and she DID "put a spell" on me! Before I finally dragged myself to bed that night (in the wee morning hours actually!), I had watched/listened to probably two dozen of her performances! I been telling people to watch this girl for the past 8 years. When she releases her album, I believe everybody will know who Angelina is. Every record label and Disney have been trying to sign her for years. Her Uncle Mike is her agent and 3 years ago she signed with Republic Records and her family moved from Oslo to LA.. Her latest videos have all had Rob Christie, musical director of Republic Records, playing the piano. Check out her tribute to Elvis, Suspicious Minds. She made it her own. Queen was so impressed with her rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody that they gave her a copyright of that version. Her mother wanted her to have a normal child hood and doesn't want an album released until she graduates and turns 18. When Quincy Jones heard her sing, he said he hasn't seen young talent like that since the first time he heard Michael Jackson. At the Grammy after parties this year she was pictured with the CEO'S of Republic Records and Universal Music Group and also meeting the president of Universal Music International. It was near midnight here and my daughter calls. She was in the USMC at the time and serving in Europ. I knew she was on leave and her and her mother were in Holland or someplace. She was at a concert and was freeking out about this "Little Girl" who was singing like she was 60-year-old women. She held the phone up so I could hear Angelina singing and I was blown away. We have all been fans since and I've got all her songs and her book. She is only just getting revved up and is poised to be the queen of Music and as such the bar she will set for others to reach will be High.

She is 9 years old and 2 months, the hand written notes she handed to the band leader was her wishes of how she wanted the band to follow for her points of where pauses, changes, and special instermintation was wanted when the band was done they loved her and were calling her the Boss, and many of the band members have gone on to play for her in additional recordings

It's Magic is the name of her album with the Norway military band... released when she had just turned 12 I think? Anyway the album is available from various vendors including Itunes. One of the cuts from that album is the Billie Holiday song "I'm a Fool to Want You". There is an video of Angelina singing this song for this album while in studio recording room...... you won't believe she's 11!!

The FIRST time I heard this, I lost it! My mind was so blown in the best way possible. I think it's safe to say that, not only as a first time viewer, but every time, we go on a spiritual journey with her. I gotta say Mr. Garcia, the operative word in your question is FIRST. Hi Philip 👋. Great reaction to 9 Angie. I was blown 🤯 by this when I saw is when it was released a year after it was filmed. Angie said in an interview when she was 10 a year after filming it, that "She saw the original (Screaming Jay Hawkins) and it was nice, but when she screams, it's that everyone would love one another"., Angelina did this arrangement herself at 9, you also saw her handing the notes and wishes as she called them back then to the conductor for the changes. We are told it is her arrangement of the piece. In the beginning we see someone looking at it. She is doing her version directly of Screaming Jay Hawkins version from televised performances he did. She does some of the same things he did in his crazy performances. But for a 9 yr old girl with that voice to tackle it is OUTRAGEOUSLY great. It is truly a conundrum when we try to rationalize how it is possible that this tiny sweet-faced 9yo Norwegian girl can step up to a microphone, flip some switch within her, become this "beast-mode" version of herself (most probably named "AJ don't play"), deliver an extraordinary and musically and socially sophisticated performance, then just-like-that return to the pensive young lady once again... There aren't words for this! "I Put a Spell On You" has been covered many times and is recognized as a classic, yet rarely is the tone of the original 1956 "Screamin" Jay Hawkins version captured. This is because Hawkins was the original shock-rock guy (think Ozzy Osbourne-type craziness) and his style is difficult to emulate and also because his dated delivery is uncomfortable and stereotypical to our modern sensibilities. Yet Angelina respectfully sings his own song in a manner that exceeds his (Hawkin's image is on the candle she holds at the start of the video). You must go and listen to Hawkins' original (and throw in a couple of "famous" covers as well) to see the true genius in how AJ incorporates many of his vocal elements [usually omitted by most singers]. This shows another aspect of her musical IQ and arranging genius (not to mention her masterful control of her vocal instrument equaled by few others regardless of age). Thank you for featuring Angelina again. I hope you will do many more reactions to her, as she is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on KZfaq, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener. Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below, (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers. (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player. (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine" (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted. (g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song. (h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time. (i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word (j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. (k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying. (l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella! Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.
