What witchery is this!!! Thank you for this reaction. I would love to hear more of your reactions - you are bright, cheerful, honest and good grief, so stunningly... knowledgeable! 😅 I do mean that sincerely. Such a lovely, refreshing change from “I don’t know what song this Angela Jordania is singing but dude it’s awesome please hit like and subscribe comment below and go to my patreon page & hit me up for 20”. Your points about her voice are all extremely valid, of course (because like, you know your s**t and we don’t). But as others have said, I can gladly report that Angelina has never come even close to reproducing the explosiveness, growliness, or tongue rootiness of this performance. In fact, there are several performances of this song from later in her childhood and while some them are really awesome also, none of them are sung in the same style. In fact she has barely ever used her growl since then, certainly nothing even remotely close to this scale. She does have a bit of a jazzy Kermit voice that she will incorporate into some of the jazzier songs, and does have a couple of other powerful songs like “I Have Nothing“ where she pushes the upper limit of her range and “It’s a Man’s World“ where she drowns our a military orchestra but for the most part she has clearly made a decision to take it easier on her voice and focus on safer singing habits since this song. It’s almost like she just wanted to go all out on this one song, perhaps as her tribute to Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. One of the things I really appreciate about Angelina is that, despite having such an insane array of tricks and vocal styles to draw from, she (almost) never employs any of them just for the sake of employing them. I said “almost” because I think her America’s Got Talent performances were tailored to that particular audience, and hence the drawn out melismas and de rigeur belts that were in all of those performances (especially the first two). She does have some performances, especially earlier on in her childhood, where she’s heavier on the stylization (sometimes a bit much for my taste), but they tend to focus more on her vocal fry and vibrato, which was some cases was quite exaggerated (“I’d Rather Go Blind”) to capture some of the older jazz sounds that she was influenced by back when the rest of us were learning how to eat with a spoon. Her singing style has tended to become more restrained and minimalistic as she has matured and I definitely mean in a good way. Someday you can compare her versions of “Summertime” from Norway’s Got Talent and from a concert with the KORK orchestra a few years later. I’d love to hear your reaction to songs like “Young and Beautiful“ by Lana Del Rey or “Cry Me a River“ by Julie London et al. “Every Time We Say Goodbye” is another one. As is that KORK version of “Summertime”. These performances are just achingly beautiful but they get their power from their simplicity and the subtlety with which she uses any special vocal techniques, if she uses them at all. (Links below) I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned, but Angelina recently signed with Republic Records. I’m sure anyone else who mentioned it would’ve also mentioned that his is the label with which Taylor Swift, Drake, Julia Michaels (one of my favourites - I hope she connects with Angelina and takes her under her wing - and I hope AJ can collaborate and learn from her absolutely brilliant songwriting talents:), The Weeknd, Florence & the Machine, Ariana Grande and many more like them are signed. Everything I have learned about this label suggests that they are pretty responsible about taking care of their artists and allowing them to be themselves rather than forcing them into some kind of mold. And they are also, of course, just massive (in influence - they are actually pretty small in number) and will see to it that Angelina gets the exposure to be as successful as she wants to be. I do hope they set her up with a top-notch vocal coach just to protect that delicate and precious instrument of hers, particularly since it has had a lot of use going back to a very young age. We have known about the label since an interview with her uncle/manager in a Norwegian music publication in late summer, but they only a few days ago put up her own page on their artist site. (Nothing except a couple photos and her social media links but it does make it official!) I really REALLY love your reactions - you are literally THE best and I hope we get to hear more Angelina reactions from you soon. Bewitched in Canada, Dave As promised ... Cry Me a River (my favourite Angelina performance - smoother than smoothie peanut butter and it just flows effortlessly from her) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptOFdJp6yaydgnk.html Young and Beautiful (another just wow subtly beautiful performance) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/adaiereZ07LNnGg.html Every Time We Say Goodbye (dreamy urban rooftop performance, not so much a song, more of a magic spell) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gbiDfJt50rqsenU.html Summertime (KORK) - more sorcery, like the delicious Apple that will put you straight into the nicest coma you’ve ever had) - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qdqneZelzpfYkpc.html

As someone that has been following Angelina's journey for a very long time, and has watched (literally) thousands of reaction videos with her, I have to say this is THE most in depth look at the technical side of her vocals I have seen. I really appreciate that you took the time to explain it all in such detail. As far as the possibility of damage to her young voice, you will be happy to hear this particular performance is a one time thing. I have seen her perform this song many other times, but never again in this exact way. One of the things you noticed that really sets Angelina ahead of the pack is her insane ability to control the time and space around the music. Her timing, her phrasing, her musicality is just off the charts. She is able to use all the right techniques to convey the emotion of the song... which is another thing that sets her apart.... she seems to understand the intended emotions of a song in a way that is so beyond her years, and then she can relay those emotions in a way that allows us to understand them too. One thing that I think you may have missed (or maybe I just missed you mentioning it) is how incredibly effortless she make it look. She is one of the most natural singers I have ever watched. It's as if it flows right from her soul. She once said (when she was even younger than she is here) that singing was as important as breathing for her. She makes it seem like it is as easy as breathing for her as well. I can tell that you immediately understand how rare her talent is, and you have a LOT more to hear from this young genius, so I really look forward to seeing you check out more of her stuff. ...and as with anyone new discovering Angelina, I have to leave you with this short bio so that you can learn a little more about her background and her kind and beautiful soul *Angelina Jordan* - Angelina Jordan was born Jan 10 2006 in Oslo, Norway. She is currently 14 - She began singing at the age of one and a half - At 2 or 3 she discovered Jazz through her grandmother and started studying all the greats from Jazz history with youtube videos. - *Why Angelina always sings barefoot* - When Angelina was 6 years old, she was traveling with her grandmother and met a poor girl with no shoes trying to make money on the streets. They talked for a while and discussed their dreams. It was cold and the girl had scars on her feet. Seeing this, Angelina took off her shoes and gave them to the girl. The girl thanked her and told Angelina she would pray for her every day. That day Angelina made a vow to always sing barefoot until all the children of the world could have shoes. To this day, whenever Angelina is performing in public, she sings barefoot as a way to remember that little girl and to remind us that there are less fortunate people in the world that could use our help. Angelina holds so true to this promise that she has sung outdoors in Norway, in december... barefoot. She has sung at a dinner with ex-pres Obama... barefoot. She went on AGT (possibly the biggest stage in the world)...bare foot. She made a promise at 6 years old, and has stuck strong to it for years. That takes a special kind of person. - She has always been the driving force behind her own singing career. It was her that asked her mother to take her to Norways Got Talent, where she auditioned at 7 years old and went on to win the whole show at just 8 years old. - In an interview after the show, when asked what she was going to do with the prize money, the 8 year old replied, "I would like to give it to orphans that need clothes and shoes" - When Angelina was 9 years old she became the youngest published author in Norway, when she wrote a book about the story of why she doesn't wear shoes when she sings. She donated proceeds from the sales of the book to help children in need. - The reason you may not have heard of her is because her parents are very protective of her childhood. After she won NGT, they did not want her to be thrust into stardom before she had a chance to grow up as a normal child, and get her education. They allowed her to do a few select shows (mainly private and charity events) with a couple public shows every year when she is out of school. Her mother said in an interview that they have turned down 90% of the offers that came in. Over the years since NGT, they have turned down offers from many major record labels and even disney. - Angelina has covered more than 130 songs and over 65 artists in the last 6 years. She always selects the songs herself... everything ranging from old classic jazz to modern pop. She is able to change her voice to match any song she sings and make it her own. (she can cover Amy Winehouse and Lana del Rey like nobody else) - Angelina has collaborated with some very big names over the last few years... Quincy Jones, Mark Ronson, David Foster, Alan Walker and many more. All of which heard her and were blown away by her talent. - Angelina has written three of her own original songs: "What is Life", "Shield" and "Oslo". (all are amazing...all can be found on youtube) In summary, Angelina Jordan is destined to be one of the greatest singers to have ever lived. This is just my opinion, but if you listen closely to any of her stuff you will hear the greatness. She sings with a natural style. There is no acting, no showing off, there are no unnecessary runs, or big belty notes just for the purpose of saying "hey look at me sing". She once said "when I sing I go into a beautiful world in my head", and you can always hear the results of that. When Angelina sings it is pure soul, pure emotion, pure music. Update: On Aug 26, 2020 Angelina's Manager/Uncle announced in an interview that they have decided on Republic Records as the best fit for Angelina and she is now signed with them as their "highest priority new artist". She has done so much already, but at 14 she is just getting started!!!

I think your comment is excellent and true. Great "in depth look" and I too appreciate Julia's thorough explanation with illustrations no less! Angelina has a natural feel for every song and makes it hers! I think the spirits of singers past are watching out for her and her voice. She never harms her vocal muscles by doing her performances constantly the same way. It's like she's playing with her voice to find the right technique but in such a natural way, for every song she sings. What a treasure she is, both talent wise and her personality.

@@carlnietoweise4653 I could never forget "summertime" ;) Both the 8 year old, and 10 year old versions which are very different and still equally special. That would actually be a good example to show how she changes and evolves her delivery and rarely does a song the same way twice. But one thing I have learned in making so many reaction request.... it is an impossible task to select which ones to recommend because her library of quality performances is so massive. I chose those two partially because she didn't get to see the softer side of angelina in this one, and both of those are good for that. Her 2016 "Every time we say goodbye" is one of the prettiest, smoothest things I have ever heard in my whole life... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gbiDfJt50rqsenU.html When you listen to this "I put a spell on you" and that "every time we say goodbye" back to back it is hard to fathom that they are coming from the same person.

A couple random comments: 1. Since this is your first exposure to Angelina, you don’t realize that at nine years old, Angelina can be having fun with an over the top cover of Jay Hawkins version of this. Its a one-off performance, but completely indicative of her ability to cover many, many genres like they’re all in her sweet spot. 2. I’d say you need to listen to only a couple more songs to realize that Angelina is one of the best singers you’ve ever heard. Her voice itself is unique: slightly raspy, soulful, breathy and mesmerizing. But her interpretation of lyrics is unmatched-and I mean that literally. To see her 180 degrees different from I Put a Spell on You, watch, for example, her cover of an Adele song: Someone Like You, or A Million Years Ago. 3. For a glimpse of her musicality, arranging, and fearlessness before audiences and judges, Bohemian Rhapsody is probably your best introduction to why you‘ll be getting hundreds of comments about Angelina. She is once-in-a-lifetime talented. Just entering her teens now, and easily the most captivating singer I’ve ever heard-and I’ve followed music from the 1950’s.

This was a tribute to creator of the song Screaming Jay Hawkins (his face is on the mug she holds in the beginning), so the growls and squeals were techniques he used that she gave a nod to. Also, she arranges ALL her songs including this, and the note she wrote was instructions to the pianist. Every band she plays with calls her the Boss because she politely tells them how to play a song the way she wants.
@orwellknew9112

Very good context. Angelina sang this song in the way that was required to give the homage to the original. Just look at the name of the ordinal artist, it’s not “Whispering” Jay Hawkins, it’s “Screaming” Jay Hawkins. Her other song choices are not all like this, which I think was the concern about the toll it could take on her voice. Now that she is a teenager, we can see her musical instrument has developed just fine. Angelina’s voice has a great texture to it and she can and does cover a lot of different songs. But where she is a “monster” (I think that’s the term that Julia uses for extreme talent) is her musicality and her ability to connect with the emotions of the listener. I think she is a genius and that’s quite obvious even without even knowing that she’s the one creating her own versions of the songs she covers. Angelina takes songs and makes them different from the originals enough to make them her own while still paying homage to the originals and the emotions they conveyed. That was something Simon Cowell picked up right away on America’s Got Talent when Angelina sang her unique interpretation of Bohemian Rhapsody.

This was a bit of a tough video for me but I hope you guys enjoyed the insights into child voice development. One of the things I didn't mention was that because children's vocal folds are short and their pharynx's (resonating tracts) are small this means that their natural sound is a fair bit lighter with higher vocal qualities. Manipulating the vocal tract/laryngeal position is just one of the ways you can change this.

@@osez111 i wish I could give a concrete answer for that but in all honesty it depends on the person, who is guiding them through voice change/whether they're doing any singing at all etc a lot of factors come into play. Naturally voice change is more drastic for boys/men but girls also go through voice change which affects them in similar ways but at different degrees. I could possibly talk about this in a video if you like :)

This was a one-off, she's never repeated it in this manner. It was indeed her very own arrangement of Screamin' Jay Hawkins 1956 original. She choses what songs she sings and how she sings them. She'll go to war (politely) with backup musicians who don't know her and don't think an 8 or 9 year old knows best how she should sing a song. She's not being exploited, never has been. She's fortunate to have a wonderfully supportive family who don't particularly need additional income. Most of the concerts in which she's performed have been for charities. She donated the money she won at NGT to children's charities. Her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani, was also a child prodigy, artist, poet. Angelina has stated that Mery, a jazz lover, is the major inspirational influence in her life. She sings many genres equally well. Here are a couple jazz recommendations: "Feelin' Good" ten years old, charity concert kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pp6bdK9e2K2uqGw.html; Cole Porter's 1944 classic, "Every Time We Say Goodbye" kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gbiDfJt50rqsenU.html. To get an idea of what is going on in her head, here is an interview on a live program that's popular in both Norway and Sweden. They switch to English at 0:38. At one point she breaks into a line from "Diamonds Are Forever", acapella. This is NOT a reaction request. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b52YnbqYmbrTgoU.html. However, at the end of the interview, she joins her band to present her original song, "Shield", to which you might want to react. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/orekiMWHsMiUpqc.html

It’s funny how Julia has never responded to the fact that it has been REPEATEDLY pointed out that this is a character piece and she completely failed to understand the context. Context is important for this one if she is going to try to shoehorn her PhD research into this reaction. Because it’s exactly apply when it’s not a regular thing. No damage to Angelina’s voice occurred here. And there was no threat of it.

If you watch Screamin' Jay Hawkins' performance on the Arsenio Hall Show (on Y.Tube) you'll see where some of her choices originated. (That was his face on the candle at the beginning.) I think she is singing this way just for this song. Compare this to her cover of Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday" on Norway's Got Talent when she was 7 yrs old or any of her later performances.

I have a hard time recommending Jay's TV and video appareances for comparisons because these were done 20-30 years after this was clearly his One Hit Wonder. He had to be soooo bored that he was willing to do anything to pump himself up. I prefer to argue that his original recordings (the audio-only versions) were far more "his original choice". But... something more... he never composed that song to sound like his video-act. Never. I think he composed it thinking in terms much closer to the way Angelina performed it - he knew he could belt out This or That portion - he was a belter, after all. Once this recording was done, though, he became known as Screaming. His original recordings were, supposedly, done while he was heavily drunk after a long recording session and much of his signature boozing. So, even his orig recordings had, uh, 'effects' that he never heard in his own head while composing.

As a professional voice actress, when she started singing, I was immediately worried for her vocal health (despite appreciating how beautiful it was), and to hear you spend so much time explaining in-depth about vocal health and vocal function really brought me joy and relief. So many people in our industry push themselves or get pushed too far and can suffer permanent damage. I got a little teary-eyed to see you use so much of this video to caution people on the possible dangers of pushing young voices too far!

The concept of mimicry is an interesting one- she was certainly able to receive , interpret and vocalize (particularly jazz) at a very high level, remarkably early. There's a tendency to lessen this achievement in childhood because it's almost unexplainable. I'd argue the best descriptor is genius. We also need to keep in mind that in essence, most musical learning and expression- even so-called original- is a form of mimicry. That's a great observation re Christopher Walken! I feel what often gets overlooked watching AJ, especially early on, is that english is a second language.

She was nine years old in this performance. At that point she was already doing her own arrangements. There's a nod to that fact at the beginning of this video where you see the musical director reviewing her arrangement notes. This was an homage to Screaming Jay Hawkins. I think she and her vocal coaches very much were aware of the issues you raise because in the two later performances of this song I've heard she pulled way back.

@@BlackWolfSpirit Yes you're right. But my point was only that this performance is an outlier. In general, she sings with very healthy technique. Thanks for your first wonderful reaction with Angelina, Julia, good choice for Halloween and welcome to Angelina's world. She in this song is amazing, I'm sorry for the destabilizing effect ... but this is Angelina 🤗 😜 and this song is a kind of investiture, is the watershed between simple listeners and fans of that girl. Certainly not many adults know Screamin', certainly the only little girl of 9 years in the world who knows him and who also thinks of singing him without any fear is Angelina.❤️ And it's incredible that this adaptation is all her own (the sheets written) and that at that age she was able to evaluate and transform, according to her sensitivity, such a particular and powerful song 😊 How is it possible that a girl of that age can make and sing the most beautiful transposition of this song from 65 years ago ... and it has been sung by many great performers. Angelina is not only what you saw in this perfect performance, she is much more, even very different, but everything she does is at a superlative level, she sang about 130 different interpretations, including covers, songs written for her and her originals written between 11 and 12 years old, if they seem enough 😊❤️ You can react at her first 4 public performances of Norway's Got Talent in 2014 (so about two years before this of this video), those performances made during a few months are the her first public appearances, but you can already see what her was capable of and how her skills had improved in that limited period of time. Or, if you prefer to continue from the end, there are 3 incredible rewritten songs for AGTC 2020 The 4 songs of Norway' Got Talent 2014 that she won “Gloomy Sunday” - Age 7 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mpmXhsugnt_KaGw.html "I’m a fool to want you" (acapella) - Age 7 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gr6boa-LqdW2hoU.html “Bang Bang” - Age 8 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pslyoqVlnq3cnmw.html “Summertime” - Age 8 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mNSgedZ0s7Hedps.html The 3 songs with which she participated in America’s Got Talent Champion 2020 "Bohemian Rhapsody" - Age 13 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gtmEe5Nju5-0pGg.html "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" - Age 13 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hLyCirx20J64Y3U.html “Someone You Loved" - Age 13 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zs2fkrd60prOpH0.html

First all, thank you for the most in-depth reviews of one of Angelina’s classic performances. Especially because you appear to be very much qualified to do so. I am in my late 70’s and I have listened to many child singers over the years, but this performance was like NO OTHER! I will likely review your commentary again and again to absorb your insights. It is difficult to reconcile Angelina’s age and the quality of her performance here. I have listened to the reaction of others many, many times...perhaps a couple of hundred by now. And the result is always the same, I am shocked every time, and I am not tired of hearing it again and again. Near the end of your review you suggested that stressing the voice for a performance now and then might not be harmful. Of all her KZfaq performances, over a 130, this was the only one in which she went all out to recreate a tribute to Screaming Jay Hawkins, the original author and artist for this song. I hope you review any and all of Angelina’s repertoire in future...she is a unique talent in all respects: musically, morally, and spiritually!

What a great reaction and analysis! Reactors seem to be a three basic types (with some overlap on the first two): the analyst who understands sound and vocal production (you, of course, and a handful of others), the music aficionado who loves to listen and can sometimes add some explanation about why they like what they are hearing with some knowledge of some techniques like vibrato, vocal fry, etc., and the subscriber garnering hoping for monetization kind who often just tells us she's great while, for many, checking out or being concerned with how they look on camera. Yeah, yeah...there are, of course, variants of these. Your approach is very much appreciated. You understand the need for objective analysis while trying to soothe the, possibly, offended sensibilities of fans who hear negatives. Well done! As you now know, you have opened a huge can of worms, or you have viewed the opening of the rabbit hole that all fans want you to leap into or you have jumped on the train to begin an amazing journey of awe, surprise, and remarkable therapeutic joy. I hope you decide that you want to do this. Angelina is as versatile an artist as any you know (and better than most). Her voice adapts to the needs of the song. She sings different styles and genres with ease and expertise. I'm a new sub-in hoping you continue to react to and analyze the talent of this Angel. Lots of links in the comments. Have fun!!
