Wagakki Band Daishinnenkai 2018 is one of the most amazing and entertaining concerts I have ever seen. They are all professionals on their instruments. Yuko Suzuhana - vocals Machiya - guitar, vocals Beni Ninagawa - shamisen (three strings) Kiyoshi Ibukuro - koto (horizontal harp - 25 strings) Asa - bass Daisuke Kaminaga - shakuhachi (bamboo flute) Wasabi - drums Kurona - wadaiko/taiko Recommend "Hakushu Kassai" from the same concert

You should check out their live performance of "Senbonzakura". They are incredible and mix modern sounds with traditional sounds. Even their main vocalist uses a traditional technique on her singing. I love their music.

I love this band. They are excellent entertainers with high music instruments playing skills. Best of all, it seems like they are really enjoying their performance.

They have some really interesting characters, the lead singer is a student of a number of traditional arts. She has done sword dancing in some concert appearances. The lead guitar player was a top session player who played in a mask on stage for a number of years, eventually he stopped wearing it. He is supposed to be the fastest guitar player in Japan.

The drum set/style is taiko/wadaiko specifically and the koto is the zither type string instrument

Damn, the KZfaq algorithm failed me again! Anyway, Wagakki Band is *always* a great watch. Thanks for taking a chance on them! As far as I've been able to discover, all eight members started playing their instrument when they were quite young. I believe Beni, the beautiful shamisen player, started playing when she was four years old. I'm going to recommend "Yoshiwara Lament" live from the Tokyo National Museum in 2017. The song was originally written by the bass guitarist, Asa, and he sings backup on it. The song has a killer melody, one of the catchiest I've ever heard, and it's carried by the shamisen. Here's a link. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eqpmf6uX0pulio0.html

I found them four years ago, then found the vids that the traditional musicians posted. I had a HS social studies teacher (1971-72) who was hip deep in Japanese culture so I was over the moon to find a way to get a Japanese movie fix in like fie mins. Oh and Wagakki is the generic term for traditional instruments. Last thin but do not tell my wife that I have a mad old roadie crush on Beni the Shimansen player. Koto is the harp like instrument. Wanna go in a new direction? Try The Snake Charmer a bag piper from India. If you want the hardest rockin violin in metal that would be Unlucky Morpheus (another Japanese act for more guitar goddess Love Bites also Japan. Dakka Skanks from the UK will get you taste of new ska/roots.

@@gordowg1wg145 she gets so focused on her playing that I wonder if on those big live shows she hears "PLEASE smile!" in her ear monitor. When she does smile it is stunning.

Haven't heard of this group before, really cool! World music in general is quite a rabbit hole by itself but it's cool to see musicians like these guys taking it and putting a "modern" spin on it. The lyrics remind me of a lot of the old city pop stuff coming out of Japan in the 80s... Perhaps you'll give BABYMETAL a go? They're from Japan as well, but a bit harder-edged 😁

"Koto" is the harp like instrument, not the drums. The drums are taiko drums. The woodwind flute is the shakuhachi and the stringed banjo like instrument is a shamisen.

Thanks for the comment. Just realized that "Kodo" is a group. Taiko is the style. I misunderstood kodo as being the style, not the specific group.

I do really enjoy this band also. For another really unique band that is a breath of fresh air, I would highly recommend trying out Babymetal. I'd recommend Megitsune, or Headbanger as a first reaction. I have always wondered how much fun it would be if Babymetal and this band teamed up together and created something!
