This video is intended as a guide to the basics surrounding simple intervals and is suitable for those studying grades 1 & 2 of the associated board (ABRSM) theory exams . It is essential that viewers are familiar with the keys of grades 1 & 2 (C, G, D, A, F, Bb, Eb, Ab majors and A, E, D minors) before this video is viewed.
This is an updated version of the video which I released in April 2009. This version corrects some minor errors which crept into the original version.

I don't know what it is about music theory that i just don't understand when my professor explains it to me. he's a good teacher--patient as well, but i seem to never understand his lessons. I have no problem learning calculus, arguably several times harder, but music theory always gives me trouble. your video explained it very clearly to me. thank you.

C major: C to C = unison, C to D = 2nd, C to E = major 3, C to F = perfect 4, C to G = perfect 5, C to A = major 6, C to B = major 7, C to high C = perfect octave or perfect 8. (according to the ABRSM Grade 3 theory.)

Hi, I have been watching your videos for the last few days and have learnt more about the theory side here than I have in the last 2 years. I am going for an audition in 3 weeks and we have to do a theory test as well as a practical audition. I'm just wondering if you have any videos on how to aurally work out intervals? I can work them out on paper no problem but find it a bit harder to practice listening to them. Thanks for all your amazing videos, keep it up :)

does anyone know why in the minor scales the 2nd is never flattened? seems logical to assume that 2,3,6,7 would be flattened so would be completely opposite to the major scale?

Since the D natural minor and F major scales (and A phrygian, and probably many others) use the same notes, when wouldn't the opening note or tonic be the key?
@xthejordx
@xthejordx 11 жыл бұрын
In all three forms (natural minor, harmonic minor, and melodic minor) the F in the D minor scale is natural. This is what makes the scale minor. If it were F#, we would be in D major. In the harmonic and melodic versions of D minor, a C# is present instead of a C natural in the natural minor. I hope that makes sense.

what is the point of knowing the key signature? can't u just count on the staff and if one is flat its a minor not a major. My question is, is there a reason to learn it this way for later theory purposes
@zacharylawrence
@zacharylawrence 9 жыл бұрын
If you want to learn any theory knowing the key signature is the most basic foundation. So yeah there is a point to it, all other theory is going to build on that

why is there a C# in the D minor scale when it is the relative minor of F major so it should only have a B flat in it either way?
@bsykes284
@bsykes284 7 жыл бұрын
Rory Horgan It was the D harmonic minor scale. The harmonic minor scales have a sharp 7th.
@carsonstephens2508
@carsonstephens2508 6 жыл бұрын
B Sykes it’s not specifically a sharp 7th note. The 7th note is just raised by 1 semitone(half step). So if the 7th note is an Eb, it would become an E natural.

In your videos on major and minor scales you state that there must be one, and only one, note on each line and space between the first and eighth note of the scale, regardless of which scale it is. Therefore when presented with an interval, at Grade 1 and 2, the key signature associated with the interval notes is completely irrelevant. One need only count the lines and spaces between the two notes, as you describe, in order to determine the interval's quantity.

So, intervals always relate to the notes in a given scale. A fifth - perfect fifth, equates to 7 semitones whatever the scale, correct? Is the same true for all other intervals?
@johnhill762
@johnhill762 2 жыл бұрын
Should be called “diatonic intervals”. Chromatically, you have all 12: unison, min 2nd, maj 2nd, min 3rd. maj 3rd, 4th, tritone, 5th, min 6th, etc.
