Eluveitie (pronounced el-VAY-ti), is a Swiss folk metal band that uses a complex array of instruments, most of which are of Irish origin. The band currently has nine members. As most bands go, each member is tasked with one instrument or part, but in Eluveitie, most of the musicians involved can play numerous different instruments, especially the harsh vocalist, Chrigel Glanzmann. The most abstract instruments in this video are the hurdy-gurdy and the bodhran (pronounced bore-AHN). The hurdy-gurdy is a stringed instrument that produces sound by a hand-crank that turns a rosined wheel, which rubs against the strings. The wheel functions much like a violin bow, and single notes played on the instrument sound similar to those of a violin. The bodhran is a is an Irish frame drum ranging from 10-26 in. (25-35 cm.) in diameter. A goatskin head is tacked to one side (synthetic heads or other animal skins are sometimes used). The other side is open-ended for one hand to be placed against the inside of the drum head to control the pitch and timbre. The other instruments that the band uses, aside from the typical stuff, includes: Celtic harp Mandola Irish bouzouki (round guitar similar to a lute, banjo, or mandola) Hammered dulcimer (similar to a xylophone) Bagpipes Violins/Violas Whistles/Flutes

I've seen probably 10 reactions to them now, and only one of them recognised the instrument. I love how most are realy confused on the Hurdy Gurdy, and I love the reaction to such an odd instrument. For a person who doesn't know what it is. Its a bit like a a violine and a Bag pipe had sex. You have a rotating bow attacking the strings. Most Of them (sometimes 6 sometimes 4) are melodic strings whcih can be tapped to like you wood with a piano. The last one is a bourdon, which is a standing sound you cannot change in pitch but alter its sound a bit snaring.

Another Fun Fact . Eluveitie has had over 27 members from 2002-2017 and their current lineup is the largest in terms of numbers with 9 members , they've also had around 10 guest musicians as well

lmfao... I love watching reaction videos to Eluveitie. They're always so confused by the Hurdy-Gurdy, and always freaking out by the addition of different instruments and how beautifully they compliment the music. It never gets old xD

Those are actually whistles...not flutes, and the "weird" instrument is a Hurdy Gurdy, and yes, it is indeed folk metal. And on that note, I'll put in another word for Wintersun's Sons of Winter and Stars Live Rehearsal @ Sonic Pump studios! L8rs!

Slania is completely Epic! Inis Mona, Primordial Breath, Calling the rain, and Slania's song are just a few of the great songs on that album. This was the album where I discovered them and it is a completely badass album from start to finish. Highly Recommended!

Fun Fact . This is not the original lineup of Eluveitie . The band's longest lineup from 2004-2016 was responsible for songs like Inis Mona . Members Ivo Henzi , Anna Murphy left in 2016 , Merlin Sutter , Simon Koch , Meri Tadic and brothers Rafi and Servan Kirder all left starting from 2008-2016 .

If anyone cares, here are (what I think are) all the other instruments in this song(besides guitar, bass, and drums): - Hurdy Gurdy (Basically like a bowed instrument, but instead of a bow it uses a felt covered wheel to play the strings, and keys for the melody. Also has drone strings to create a constant sound over the melody) - Irish Bouzouki (the mandolin/guitar thing) - Low Whistle (the larger flute) - Tin/Penny Whistle (the smaller one, the frontman played) - Bodhrán (the drum in the spoken word part) - Harp - Violin

@Earth's Mightiest Bastards Podcast I'll help you out with explaining the band without boring you too much. The band has been around since 2002 and originates from Switzerland. There has been huge changes in the lineup which has caused their sounds to dramatically change. They departed with the previous drummer, guitarist, and hurdy gurdy/back up vocalist who now started Cellar Darling. The band is comprised of 9 members that play instruments that date back as much as 2500 years which is around the time that the people of Gaul (predates the Celts) were around which is what a lot of their music is about the history of these people. The are a fusion music of Folk and Melodic Death Metal and actually sound better live then they do on their albums. I've seen them now 4 times and plan on seeing them this tour if they make it to North America. The instrument you are probably the most confused about is the Hurdy-Gurdy. Here is the Wiki explanation: The hurdy-gurdy is a stringed instrument that produces sound by a hand crank-turned, rosined wheel rubbing against the strings. The wheel functions much like a violin bow, and single notes played on the instrument sound similar to those of a violin. Melodies are played on a keyboard that presses tangents-small wedges, typically made of wood-against one or more of the strings to change their pitch. Like most other acoustic stringed instruments, it has a sound board and hollow cavity to make the vibration of the strings audible. Other songs you may want to check out to see how they have changed over the years are to include, (Inis Mona, Of Fire, Wind, & Wisdom, Slania's Song, Your Gualish War, Thousandfold, A Rose for Epona, Havok, Helvetios, The Silver Sister, King, and Call of the Mountain) I hope this helps and the pronunciation is (El-Vay-Ti)

Another song is carry the torch its one of those songs you cant understand Aka its in neo gaulish but so nice and if you want some dancing type of songs go with tegernako and celtos. But all of there songs even the acoustic albums are good. Plus the the early years is remastered of there demo/ep and the first album.

Eluveitie is i believe an helvetic word, so you just have to learn ancient Celtic especially the dialect from the tribes that use to live on where is now Switzerland to pronounce that word correctly lol, alas i don't speak Helvetic so.....

You know, there is talent here and I respect those who like this band. I can see that. But this song seems rushed. If you compare styles with, say Jinjer, the settled but forceful and controlled style of a band like Jinjer is far more appealing to me
