This is off the Awake album which came after Images and Words. This album is legendary. I love how they carry some motifs throughout the compositions. For example there's a melody in Erotomonia that is played acoustically on The Silent Man. There is also a motif on The Mirror that is also incorporated in Space Dye Vest. You should check it out for yourself. As far as James Labrie's vocals is concerned, he pulled off the growly high notes on the studio version. With age, he just kind of yells his vocals on the live version. If you do decide to react to The Mirror please include Lie as both songs are blended together (studio version).

This song was from a time when James was at his peak. After this he experienced some type of poisoning and damaged his throat so it’s a bit hard to recreate songs from this album where he pushed himself so much.

This song is a hidden gem from the Awake album. Really left field stuff, but there are a few of those on that incredible album. Personally I think you would loose your mind doing the 6 degrees of inner turbulence. Its a 40minute piece that brings us on a massive ride. Nonreactor has done it yet that I know of. But few are able to absorb it too. I think you and the daily doug are amongst the few. But its not a small everyday pop reaction to do. Hoping for it still.

Octavarium is one of the quintessential Dream Theater masterpieces, and I would love to see you breakdown that song. The live “Score” version from Radio City Music Hall is the way to go.

Yes, Scarred is off of their 2nd album 'Awake' which is my favourite album. I suggest checking out Erotomania and Voices live Scenes from New York back to back. Both are incredible, and they play it perfectly.

Heya JW. As was said in other comments this is from thr Awake album which came after I&W. James does not typically does this type of singing anymore. May I suggest something from Six Degrees of inner Turbulence or Metropolis part 2 as this was the golden age of DT imo. Great reactions as always.

I am a huge James LaBrie fan. Whenever I hear any criticism of him I always come back to this - Grab a microphone and show me that you can do a better job (not in the shower) or find me another vocalist who could manage his vocal range together with his punishing live workload with an equivalant longevity in the industry. They are a rare commodity. He is so unfairly disrespected except by the ones who actually know better, like his band mates and loyal fans. To me it is not even subjective. The guy is a legend!!!

Hi JW, found your channel because of Jinjer, but actually I'm an old DT fan of the very first day, when my older brother brought home When dream and day unite in 89. Kinda lost track because of no coverage on german radio in the early 90s, but then discovered Pull me under and the albums Images and Words and Awake in 1994. Awake is by now my mostheard Headphone CD of all times, I used to know every single note without being a musician. I like your reaction, I understand your enthusiasm, being yourself a musician. I understand it even more, having seen DT 18 times live since 2000 and seeing many musicians at the concerts. I personally am an absolute Mike Portnoy fan (even though Mike Mangini is a fantastic drummer, but nobody beats the fun and the show, seeing MP playing live); therefore I would like you to react to Beyond this life of the Budokan live DVD. It not only has a James LaBrie in better shape, but it has an incredible instrumental part, something I saw live in 2002 in Düsseldorf and then after on DVD and I claim, you haven't seen anything like that before. I haven't before and I haven't after. Maybe MY enthusiasm arouses your curiosity. Metal greetings from Germany

This is from the 20th anniversary tour of the Awake album, where they played the whole album plus other songs. Too bad LaBrie had lost his voice for the gig I was witnessing. It was a constant struggle for him, to the point he had to improvise easier lines. He has very good moments but sometimes he's a complete miss. His technique doesn't make him consistent.

Great review John!! They are absolutely an amazing band, but I've often found them to be the epitome of pretentious. I love the shredding etc, the song writing structurally isn't completely to me really, but that's just rating them in my own opinion against the extreme upper tier that they lie in. James La Brie is my main problem. As you say, as soon as he goes to a certain height, he becomes unbearable for me. Singing flat most of the time too. The other musicians are incredible though, hence why I much prefer Liquid Tension Experiment. On that note though, imagine Dream Theater with the Symphony X singer! Ironic as they were massive fans of DT coming up. There are a great fistful of DT tracks that are incredible, like Dance of Eternity etc. I would still rather have Symphony X on blasting however. Whilst we're on the subject, my favourite singer of all time is Fabio Lione from Rhapsody. Absolute legend. I'll have to find the perfect track to recommend. Keep these comming!

obviously i can see you are not a real DT fan are you? Go listen songs such as Change of Season, Octavarium, Count of Tuscany. If you dont like a heavy metal thingy, go listen to The Spirit Carries On. Apparently this band doesnt just shred and plays hard solos and go like "You guys can't do this but we can" If you listen to many DT songs, you can see that they make real music. The pretentious and epitome are the words that more fitting to Liquid Tension Experiment which is the sub-project that the Dream Theater members made and most of LTE's songs are really just playing hard shredding and guitar solo just like what you said. Saying DT's song writing is structurally isn't completely is same as saying Metallica is the worst skilled band in the world.

@@andrewpark1096 I actually like the flat out shredding thing though, but I get what you're saying! I'm just not into them as much as I would probably be exptected to be based on my other tastes and the above was basically a discussion with myself on why that is. It's mainly the singer that I can't stand. Heard everything up to Octavarium back in university as my mate was really into them. Must blast that on again and give it a try.

@@AdrienJCrozet I mean James Labrie got worst for last 10 years is the fact that even serious DT fans agree. Also DT fans may agree with the fact that Dream Theater's song writing got somehow boring and worse compared to the time period before Mike Portnoy left the band, but the DT's song writing when Mike Portnoy was in the band was just crazy it was great to see their insane instrument skills with great composition.
