To get the Pedal Tone Combinator, check our blog www.reasonstudios.com/blog/pe...
Have you ever been listening to a song and there's something about a seemingly simple chord progression that gives you goosebumps? It's quite possible that you're hearing a pedal tone without realizing it! When Ryan learned about the concept of pedal point chord progressions as a kid it changed the way he made music and so he's introducing it to you if you've never tried it yet.

Awww... Dale, that comment means so much! I'm so glad you feel like we're all in this together because we ARE all in this together! I've said it before on livestreams but I'll say it again here: I was a Reason user before I was a Reason Studios employee and I'm still just a music maker like all of you so I really do feel a very strong connection and closeness to the Reason community that predates my work with the company. But that feeling I have isn't unique to me, either. There are so many of us at Reason Studios that are lucky to work for the music-making platform we already loved. And it's comments like this that amp me up even more to make and share any other knowledge I possibly can if it helps people out there because exactly like you said better than I could - we're all in this together. /ryan

normal, the foundation of western music theory is the numered bass. it is the bass who sets inversions on chords, so shifting bass changes meaning and perception of harmony. e.g. in those chords the first is C root or 3/5, the second is F 2nd inversion because the bass in on 5th dominant of chord F, which is C, so F 4/6.. the third chord is 4th species of 7th with 9th degree so chords with 5 real sounds (1/3/5/7/9) with omitted 3rd (which is not good in traditional harmony due to ambigous nature of chords without modal degree....). Keeping same bass on different chords means "pedal" in classical harmony, the bass in those cases (the note C) stays the same but its harmonic function inside the chord keep changin', in the first and last is tonic but in the second chord is dominant ;)

@ReasonStudios
@ReasonStudios 2 жыл бұрын
You could still do this with Reason 11, sure! You'd do it almost the same way I do in the video but I'll describe it for you: In Reason 11 or below the first thing you'd drag into an empty Combinator is the 6 Channel Line Mixer found in the Utilities section of devices. Then drag in the two Radical Pianos (or any instrument you want to do this with), and then click the "Show Editor" button to access the key range for each piano by selecting it on the left side. The interface is a little different looking than this video but the process is basically the same. /ryan

@@DjCrabtile Oh right! I've already gotten so used to Reason 12's way of doing it. I just loaded Reason 11 and checked. When you select one of the pianos in the Combinator Programmer section in Reason 11 you can adjust the key range by clicking and dragging the "Key Range Lo" and "Hi" values that show up in the row of settings along the lower area. You'll see -C2 and G8 there by default. /ryan

however seems to me in the example of reason it was done the opposite....chord changes root notes and the fixed note is not a pedal but an higher not, so that's not a pedal. however changing bass/lower not changes the musical meaning of a chord/chord progression, whereas adding fixed higher notes on a chord/chord progression makes something like an "ostinato" but don't change harmonic function of chords.

The only problem with Scales and Chords is that, afaik, Inversions is a static setting, which produces progressions with bad voice leading.
@ReasonStudios
@ReasonStudios 2 жыл бұрын
The inversions aren't static but it's not auto-changing either. You could automate the inversion control on the Player to accomplish voice leading or, what I do, is to write my progression and then print the MIDI to the sequencer where I transpose the notes necessary to swap the inversions as needed. It's a good point, though. Thanks. /ryan
@TheMorMor
@TheMorMor 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, I really like scales and cords in general but in certain settings the voicing is an issue. It would be a cool theoretical problem to figure out how to automatically generate nice voicings
@jordimoraguesmassanet1179
@jordimoraguesmassanet1179 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheMorMor I don't think it would be difficult. The problem with automated compositional tools is that they often lack context awareness. What was played before or after determines what's best at the current moment. If Scales and Chords could remember the last played chord, I don't think it would be hard to calculate the inversion with the smallest voice movement once the next chord is known.
