Back then, because they'd been dropped almost immediately after The Sing Off by Sony, they became a DIY group, typically shooting these videos on the couch at Avi & Kevin's shared apartment in LA (also where "Daft Punk" was shot later) on an iPad with 1 mic. That's what they could afford to do, then posting onto their KZfaq channel. They wanted to prove to Sony and other record labels that a cappella was commercially viable. Obviously it worked.

Yes, you’re right! They won the Season 3 of The Sing Off in fall 2011. After the record label dropped them, they turned to KZfaq to build their fan base. This is where the iconic couch setup was born! One couch. One mic. One camera/ipad. 5 vocals sung all together. Raw & real talent! Just “look how far they’ve come!” Great reaction!

Sometimes we forget how Pentatonix started and maybe take for granted how much work they put into KZfaq. It's been 10 years - just 10 years!

OMG this cracks me up because they sang this at the first concert I went to in like 2013 at the House of Blues in Boston. Back then they didn’t really have a set or anything on stage and they weren’t perfect. BUT I remember they closed with this song and on the very last note someone was way off. They’d never do this now, but they all stopped and started cracking up. Turns out it was Avi who sang the wrong note and he took the blame for it. I’ve seen them in concert eight times and more I’m thinking way back to that first one and how it was so raw and laid back 😀

It's so interesting to look back and see that same original style: start off simple, add beatboxing and build to a crescendo or two, then scale back to just vocals and fade. It creates an emotional response in the listener and has you leaning in at the end hanging onto the very last note. They rocked this!
