This is the full Marty Stuart interview.
Marty Stuart is a five-time GRAMMY-winner, platinum recording artist, Lifetime Achievement Award recipient from the Americana Music Association, Grand Ole Opry star, country music archivist, photographer, musician, and songwriter.
Since starting out singing gospel as a child, Stuart has spent over four decades celebrating American roots music. His teenage years on tour with bluegrass legend Lester Flatt in the ’70s were followed by six years in Johnny Cash’s band in the ’80s, and a chart-topping tenure as a solo artist in the ’90s.
Most recently, Stuart confirmed the 20th anniversary release of his celebrated record, The Pilgrim - Deluxe Edition for the first time ever on vinyl. These newly unearthed songs include features by Country music legends including Ralph Stanley, Connie Smith, Emmylou Harris, Earl Scruggs, and more.

That’s a story I’ve heard often over the last 30 years Esther. I use to have a small chain of guitar shops in middle Tn. and Ky. All though we sold to a lot of well known and professional players the bulk was just normal people who would go home after a stressful day and pick up their guitar or other instruments and play if only for five or ten minutes and said that was their cocktail instead of drinking. It relaxed them. Thanks for watching and sharing your comments…. Best, Joe

Visited Sun Studios about 15 years back. There was a wall lined with guitars in stands. One, a Martin I believe, had written the soundboard below the bridge, "If I left this at your house...... Please Return it to me at 706 Union Ave. Memphis Ten I'll pick it up. sooner or later. Marty Stuart" I loved it.

There's a mix of all the times Waylon and Johnny appeared on David Letterman's show thru the years. Either separately or together. It's pretty long, but I just watched it 2 weeks ago, all the way thru and everytime Johnny was on, there was Marty backing him up with David's band! Man, it's some great pickin'. I still love watching him with his band on his show. He's always turning us on to good people and great music! Thanks for always making music fun, brother! ✌😎

Joe: If I had to chose your "best" interview, I would have to say that this is it! Marty showed us that no matter how different our backgrounds, and where we come from or what we music we play, we all have a lot more in common than we would think: I did photography as a kid. Like Marty, my first camera was a Kodak X15 (second version); I worked my way up to developing my own black and white film, and eventually got a Canon A-1. Many musicians are also painters, and cooks; knife makers, and gun collectors; history buffs; etc. Marty didn't want to go to Hollywood or New York; he wanted to go to Nashville, play Fender and Martin guitars, where the clothes, and play country music. I didn't ant to go to Hollywood or Nashville; I wanted go to London or stay in New York, and play Rock and Soul music, play Rickenbacker, Fender, and Gibson guitars; where the clothes of English Mods. How important it is to preserve music heritage: exposing the millennial and post-millennial generations to what came before. The fact that he wanted to save the Ryman-and did! At one time I thought about doing something to save and restore The Fillmore East. Unfortunately, no one cared, and the building has been owned by New York University for over three decades now. I keep learning something from your interviews every time watch them; especially about Nashville and country music. Thank you!

I swear, I don't know if Marty realises how freaking fortunate he has really been. He hosted the Porter Wagoner 50th anniversary Grand Ole Opry celebration, for crying out loud. The dude has played with everyone I can remember my folks ever watching on television back in the sixties when I was a kid. He's played with the Byrds. Hell, only Neil Armstrong could say that he's done something that Marty hasn't done. Yet here he is, in the same boat with the rest of us, unable to perform on account of this damned coronavirus. Sheesh. Gimme a break. What a fantastic guy.

In my humble opinion, Marty, Kenny, Harry, and Chris all have without a shadow of a doubt, THE BEST attitude, approach, outlook, passion, and total control over what they WANT to do with making music. Every show I've seen 'em do as the Fabulous Superlatives, no matter how large or small, is nothing short of a command performance. Furthermore: I can't think of a single GROUP who is doing a better job of keeping the landscape of Country, Bluegrass, Gospel and other classic styles alive & well today. The world is definitely a better place because of these cats, and God Bless them, each & every one. It's as if these boys were destined to come together.

Many interesting points to think over in this interview. One of them is when we finally move on from the pandemic will audiences remember in the long term the loss they tell us they are all feeling without music. Will that be reflected in increased ticket sales and albums. Will they decide to spend more money on downloads…which I hate.. than they did previously, realising that the artists return for their work is minimal and that the non creative download platform sharks are the only financial winners here. Most of all, in those smaller venues when musicians are up there giving their all to making music will they stop talking and listen. If not then I suggest they go outside, go home or just somewhere, anywhere else and exercise their vocal chords there. Christy Moore puts it more succinctly than that to an audience member in one of his videos. It’s not for me to repeat it here. It’s direct, to the point and witheringly accurate

I have a funny and embarrassing Marty Stuart story.... When Tempted came out (91'ish ) my 4 year old nephew was a super Marty Stuart fan so when it was announced Marty would be playing Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park i purchased a couple of tickets ( Being a fan of Marty Stuart myself ) for us to go see him during a day concert.. So we go and watch Marty's concert & my nephew Randall is having the time of his life looking and listening to Marty up on the stage.. The concert ends and it was announced if the crowd purchased merchandise from the show Marty would set up soon in-front of the stage to autograph it.. My nephew was begging me to buy him a T-shirt so he could meet Marty and of course i said yes.. So we wait in-line and finally get face to face with Marty and i tell him the concert was amazing and that my nephew ( who I'm holding up with his arms around my neck ) Randall was his biggest fan.. Marty looks and Randall and says is that right? And crickets chirp, Randall says nothing.. And i say to Randall all you've talked about for a month is going to see Marty Stuart what's wrong with you boy why are you getting all shy now? and he won't even look at Marty, he just turns his face to my ear and says without whispering because it's so loud " That's not Marty Stuart! He's too short to be Marty Stuart. My eyes got as big around as silver dollars and i said RANDALL. Marty just laughed & signed the shirt as i repeatedly apologized then made a quick getaway... I was so embarrassed but Marty was a good sport about it... About 10 years after that i bumped into Marty and his wife Connie Smith on Bourbon Street... I didn't mention the Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park story... Lol.. A true Marty Stuart fan even if he is too short to be Marty Stuart

Joe, I just watched this one again, maybe the third time now and I don't have enough 'superlatives' to describe Marty Stuart, or Joe Chambers. Marty is a pleasure to listen to, a true intellectual in addition to his musical credentials. I've seen the Superlatives numerous times and again, I don't have the words to describe them and their importance to country music. Joe, you are a treasure as well. Enjoyed this interview! I come from a musically inclined family of classic & soft rockers. Closest country music I ever listened to is Johnny Cash. Recently started binge watching interviews with musicians...discovered Marty from a Cash interview. Haven’t listened to his music yet (discovered Jerry Lee Lewis and decided I need to up my piano game). But I have a feeling when I do listen to his music, I will very much like it...he seems very down to earth and could listen to him be interviewed all day. Thank you for sharing this!

Wonderful interview. Great musician Marty Stuart; a thoughtful and funny interviewer -Joe Chambers. These wonderful videos helped me make it through Covid. Joe, peace. I’m sorry I couldn’t meet you in June. I was supposed to go to Marty’s Late Night Jam on June 8, but was slammed down by Covid; I hoped to meet you, too.

Flautalee, thank you for your kind comments- I know it would have meant a lot to my Dad, Joe. Although he was the most encouraging, generous, and kind soul you could ever meet- one thing I constantly miss most, and I told him I would, is how much he made us laugh everyday. Dad also felt KZfaq was a real blessing throughout Covid- he really appreciated his friends, like you, here. Thank you for your continued support of the channel. I hope you can visit the museum, if you haven’t already. Best, Britt

@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum If I can manage it, I will. I’m going to check out Greyhound, hoping it’s less dear than flying from Newark NJ to Nashville. The hotels near the Ryman were so expensive, too, because last year The Late Night Jam was the Tuesday of the big awards weekend in Nashville. I’m pretty sure that I got my money back for my flights, concert tickets, hotel and tours because I’d purchased ticket insurance, and because at the time flights and hotel rooms were being reimbursed if you came down with Covid. I haven’t seen the date for the LNJ yet. I’ll try to contact the Museum before I come. Ty.
