FYI, this sheet is directly from the Berklee College of Music curriculum. It's not confusing once you understand the concept of triads, I promise ;) If you wanna download this chart plus tons of other useful materials, check out Guitar Super System: guitarsupersystem.com

A lot of people in the comments are claiming your explanation is confusing, i wholeheartedly disagree. The explanation is clear as can day when showing the relation between the bass note of your triad as a characteristic of which inversion you are using. Which in my opinion is the practical knowledge associated with using triads in musical context, because knowing which note in your triad is the bass with respect to the inversion you are using allows you to freely change the voicing of your triad. As you can always identify which note is the 1, 3 and 5 instantly based on this knowledge. So i'm having a lot of fun with this right now, thanks a lot for the video. I'm really grateful that this video covered triads in this manor, really didn't expect it to broaden my horizons the way it did.

triads are just the three notes that make up any chord. the 1 3 and 5. When Tyler said first inversion that means the 3rd note of whatever chord becomes the root note and the rest fall in the fretboard depending where your at. Second inversion means that the 5th note becomes the root note and the rest come afterwards. it's that simple. if you wanted to go in deeper into you'd have to need a teacher or find books about it. it's basic theory but it works great when your trying to come out of any scale and you want to start experimenting with different sound like blues or rock etc. Great video Tyler I have the exact same chart and I'm self taught.

Actually, it is in fact the lowest note, but it doesn't really mean that you should call it "root". You are still playing the same major chord, just another voicing of it (personally, that's the best way I could understand it)

I understand this fully, however, I can see why it can confuse so many beginners. Sometimes it will naturally take sometime to sink in, and once it does, it becomes quite simple. I suggest opening 10 different videos on the same subject-matter from different channels and watching them . Chances are at least one of them will explain it to your liking. It is also important to triangulate this information. The more sources the better. Relying solely on one video, or channel is unlikely to produce any results.

Ya, I think if people are confused it’s because they don’t understand the language of scale degrees and another part where they get tripped up is the concept of multiple octaves still being the same note. I.e “how can the 1 be the highest note?”

I'm really glad you're driving home the triad concept since it lends so much more flexibility than doing everything with barre chords. If you superimpose the notes of the four shapes in the left column, you can see the root and inversions are part of the "A" shape chord. Superimposing the 2nd to left column brings out the "E" shape. The third column is the "D" shape but the root position is slid up a half step making it initially a little confusing. Seeing the chord shapes in there it's easier to find the triads on the neck.

For all the people complaining about the diagram layout. Just grab your guitar, and start following it the way he showed you how. I think you all will be surprised how logical it is once you actually use it. Turning the guitar/paper on the side would make the chord fingering seem odd, but leaving it as is is seemingly difficult when trying to explain why the terms up and across are used. Just sit behind your PC grab your guitar and try it out and it will be pretty clear why these terms are the way they are and why the layout is the way it is.

@peach495
@peach495 4 жыл бұрын
Nope, the complaint, I believe is, he does have the terms backwards on the chart. When he referenced the guitar & labeled that as "up" as he moved down the guitar, he does so because the notes played would be higher on the scale. Hence, the term "up when referencing that direction on the guitar. He then labeled moving "across" the strings themselves from the low E to the high E. Yet on the chart itself moving from the low E to High E is labeled "up" while moving up the neck itself, on the chart is labeled "across".

I agree. 100% of the other triads diagrams found online are setup properly. They follow the same direction on the neck as you would on the sheet. Meaning that when you go "UP" the neck, which means downwards on the guitar neck image, the triad diagrams should point the same direction, which is downwards on the neck image. Doesn't take a genious to at least understand why it can get confusing. I like everything on the guitar super system except the triads diagrams which I had to find elsewhere.. I mean.. when you have hundreds of people complaining on a very specific point, you can put your blindfolds on and pretend like it's all good, or you can listen to your crowds feedback. This isn't an efficient disposition. Otherwise nobody would complain. And before they come again, oh sooo much congratulation to everyone who ended up sticking with the reverse orientation! You have successfully spent more time than necessary processing those pictures until you can fluently use them. You are no superheroes so stop pretending like you are.

A major problem with the triad chart as far as I can see is that the boxes all have a thick line at the top which looks like the nut, when in fact most of the boxes are supposed to be illustrating something happening elsewhere on the neck as we go 'up' and 'across'. I agree with all the others saying that UP and ACROSS would be better the other way around, but if you got rid of all the thick 'nut' lines (except where you're talking about frets 1 - 5) it might be less confusing. The way it is now just doesn't read intuitively. Otherwise, great work! I recently bought the Guitar Super System course and am finding it very useful.

Thank you so much for putting this up. I'm new to your channel. Im 45 & been playing most of my life & consider myself above average player. I don't know anyone where I live that is anywhere near my skill level. I believe this is not due to skill, I believe it has to do with putting the time in & how bad you want to learn. Started off as a Metal player but I had a hunger form more & started learning Classical & Blues & a little jazz. I've been trying to learn damn Triads for the last week or so. But KZfaq is filled with tons of horrible videos that show themselves playing a Triad & you have to pause & rewind over & over trying to figure out what the hell there doing. And where there fingers are at. Time you firgure out which fret there on they have moved to the next chord, this is beyond frustating & a waste of time. I've been watching Rick Beato video's to learn Triads. And he does exactly that. And I find myself practicing something for hours just to realize I been doing it wrong. This is due to no TAB, to me if your going to teach without TAB at least say what string & fret your on or at least what the note is. Not everyone knows what you know. Tried writing in comments about this but I guess he's to big to be botherv with me. Comments are just tons of people brown noising him. I do appreciate what he's done for the community. But that doesn't make him perfect. We are all human & have errors. I just started watching your video & was glad to see TAB. This makes it clear to the student what they should been doing. I know it takes extra time to put that up. But it is so appreciated. And as far as Beato. He's always trying to sell his course's. But if that's the way he teaches I wouldn't spend a penny on them. So thank you again for doing what you do & spreading the love of this instrument. You just got another subscriber & if you teach lessons correctly. I'm sure in time you will surpass Beato. Cheers!

Okay, in case anybody is confused, he misspoke. He first says that "across" refers to the movement horizontally from the low E to the high E (or vice versa), as in "across the strings", which is correct. But on the sheet he actually writes "across" in the wrong spot. It should have appeared at the bottom of the page pointing left to right (really should be a double headed arrow since either direction is across). The same is true for "up". He says up means up and down the neck longways, which is true. However, on the sheet he writes it in the wrong place. He should have written it to the right of the diagram with the arrow pointing up and down. Knowing that information, and realizing that the diagrams are in the same orientation as the guitar in the video, it should be clearer HOW to at least play the shapes. If the rest of it confuses you, re-watching that part a few times should make it click. If not, I can explain it.

This helped me understand how to create inversions moving up the neck by following the 3 notes of the scale (triad), however, I am still confused as to how to move across the strings (low E up to High E.) I get lost moving from Root position across to first and 2nd inversion. I don't get where to put my fingers? Seems like mostly open strings when doing this in the key of G. I wish that the guitar tab only had one labeled at a time with instructions on which fingers to use.

There are a lot more shapes of the major triad. On these graphics lack at least two big positions and it´s inversions. this absence left two big holes between positions. You seems to use just the positions where you can use sweep picking , but the most important we have on this melodic tool is not the sweep licks, is to be able to find chord tones wherever our hands are, sweep licks are cool, but even the positions where we can´t use it , are awesome places to find chord tones and make great melodic phrases. if you ignore positions cos they aren´t sweepables you let big holes on freatboard knowledge. But, besides this point, your grasp on the concept and use of this is cleary correct.

So, up on the neck is across on the chart, and across on the chart is down on the neck?

Oh damn... I went to the area where you pointed in the video to get the Guitar SUPER System and could not figure out how to get said system for the stated (and most certainly hugely discounted and worth at least 5-8 times more than full retail list price). Stupid me, I just noticed that the video is a year old. So what is new for me, is old for coupons. Maybe and now that I have subscribed and

I was watching this at night and i got up and started trying this out, for some reason it took me a bit to figure out the vertical part until i realised it's the exact same as the other way just different placement lol

I'm still trying to find the right triad to go with the right chord by ear, I can sweep pick triads and solo the hell out of them and yet I cannot groove with the chords. Ugh.

Tyler it would help if you put the fret number on your charts. It’s confusing people just looking at the chart. It looks like every position is right at the nut. Love your channel dude. More videos of you scaring your wife with mini amps 😂😂😂

This isn't difficult, but it's something you need to come across at the right time. Know your pentatonics, have an understanding of the fretboard and have that "feel" developed. Then this kind of fits right in to place and should hit you like an, "oh, duh!".

Nothing about the diagrams is confusing they are always shown like this. Rarely, however, are different parts of the neck (higher up the octave) shown right next to depictions (of scales, chords, inversions) that are lower down the neck towards the bridge. If these diagrams were, though, labeled with a fret number it would all make more sense

I am a beginner! That is why. I really enjoy watching Tyler. And am going to give G.S.S. A shot. Just frustrated with not being able to navigate. And just copying what I see someone doing. If that makes any since.

Am I the only one who noticed that he said up on the neck is from fret 1 to fret 12, and across is from 6th string to 1st string...and immediately showed the diagram that was exactly opposite of what he said a few seconds ago? 1:03 to 3:08.
