Pretty much anything played using a guitar synth. I'll add--though it's not the case today anymore--when Rage's first album came out, a lot of people just assumed that the quirkier hip hop influenced sounds were done on a keyboard, and didn't realize that it was just Morello's creative use of a couple of techniques and effects. Like I said, no one really thinks that now more than 20 years later, as we are all well aware of Tom Morello, and he obviously influenced a lot of players who have incorporated similar sounds into their playing. But it was super novel at the time.

You know his stuff, you just don't know the fancy Greek names. Do you know do re mi, etc.? Center around Do: plain ol' major. Center around Re: Dorian. Mi: locrian? Not sure. But Fa is lydian, Sol is mixolydian (not sure of the spelling), la is aeolian (same as minor), and Ti is phrygian. Sing and play with it. If you can play the major scale, you can play its modes. All this assumes that you can move 'Do" around to any note and the scale pattern will stay the same. In some countries, "Do" is always C, but I like this system better. It makes everything fall into place. In any major key, the I chord is always do-mi-sol, the IV is fa-la-do, the V7 is sol-ti-re-fa. A kid can do it. The Musikgarten program has little kids singing songs with solfage syllables from a young age, and they can sing and play songs in different keys and different modes before they read a note of music. You can learn it, too. Here, watch this cartoon. The green alien spells out the chords that the human kid plays on the ukelele: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iMqclpeTmrSwZZs.html

@@Xubuntu47 Oh, don't get me wrong...I can shred with anyone...I just never learned all the terms and book end of it all. Although, to this day, I'm not a fan of major scales. I learned lead through matching single notes to blues scales way back in 1982. I just figure stuff out by ear....I don't think about what mode I'm in. A few things I get stuck on, like Steve Vai's crazy 12 fret jumping, but a quick look at a vid usually solves my problems. Thanks for your input. :)

I've always found it so cool how music theory and composition is full of contradiction in sound and feeling. Lydian mode is the dream mode, yet right in the middle of it is the devil's interval, the most unpleasant sound in all of music. Little nuggets like these make it possible to compose sad songs with positive major scale chord changes and have them still feel appropriate.

I would appreciate it if you did legendary licks that start out with those 3 notes at the beginning of "Stairway to Heaven" ( A, C, E. Or 7 5 5 on DGB strings)

Love this! I need to learn me some more music theory! Probably suggested a million times, and possibly already been done but, I'd love to see Legendary licks you can't play (because they're extended range (7, 8, 9 - string guitars))

I believe these two are in locrian: Painkiller - Judas Preist Blackened - Metallica
@woodchuk1
@woodchuk1 4 жыл бұрын
Greg Angel As far as Painkiller goes, the Bb5 chord in the main riff definitely could imply E Locrian, but since the Bb note isn’t present in the rest of the main riff, I’m not completely convinced that Locrian would be the overall tonality. I’d feel more comfortable saying it’s in E Phrygian due to the prominent E-D-E-F-E mordent figures in the lead part, and that the Bb5 chord was temporarily “borrowed” from E Locrian to give a more sinister feel. But you could probably argue it both ways.

@dylanchope8992
@dylanchope8992 4 жыл бұрын
Blackened can't really be put into one mode, the first half of the main riff could be Locrian, the middle part (E F# G B B) could be Aeolian and the final note being the b2 could make it Phrygian since it comes after the B. I saw a decent video once about the so called "Metallica Scale" (1 b2 ♮2 m3 4 b5 ♮5 b6 b7) which had more notes than a usual scale but you could build many Metallica riffs out of it.
@TheSquareOnes
@TheSquareOnes 4 жыл бұрын
@@dylanchope8992 Yeah, the "Metallica scale" is pretty cool and makes sense when you just think of it as minor plus the two darkest color tones (flat 2 and the tritone), definitely the kind of thing people just trying to sound heavy would stumble upon while jamming. I think I heard about it from Signals Music Studio but wouldn't be surprised if a lot of other people also covered it.

The main riff to Blackened is Locrian and legendary. It's just the root, the flat second and the tritone.
@Duarte842
@Duarte842 4 жыл бұрын
The problem with that one is that it never revolves to the flat 5th. So, it leaves room for argumentation on whether it really is locrian, or just phrygian
