I remember seeing a pub band doing a Deep Purple (Richie Blackmore) cover. It was all speed, but zero feel. Same with an AC/DC covers band, not the remotest bluesy note anywhere! Completely missing the point.

And echoes what the great Bobby Womack RIP said about soul music - its got nothing to do with colour, if you feel the song and the music in your heart it shows in your performance. All the greats display this intuition and feeling, including Gary Moore.

Yes , I play his music every day, a lot from his 'Skid Row' days, very raw stuff but I love it. I honestly dont know what I'd do without it to look up to.

You're so right. There must be millions of pretty decent guitarists out there, me and you included, who despair of not ever getting our sound together, yet part of playing is finding our own unique sound, bringing our own thing to the table. I now firmly believe it's far better to play something really beautifully well, instead of trying to be the best or fastest or most articulate etc. Those things come with practise, but I want to make beautiful music first. 😎🎸

His tone was so intimate. I miss Gary. You can tell by listening to him speak, what a nice man he was. Anyone who listens to him play is moved by his music.

If you do not relax and spend less energy executing each movement as you play faster you can't reach higher tempos, but will level out at some point and then tire out. That's like a given of fast playing. Besides notes played at speed do not necessarily sound good if played simply as a faster version of the same way of playing that note at a lower speed.

exactly, it seems he even wants to shred the slower blues stuff, also the way he attacks the string makes him look and sound more like a heavy rock player than your gentle blues soul ;)

A negative reality inversion.

Gary was incredible, but that sustain comes from his equipment. It’s nothing he did, except to make it part of one of his signature songs. I can do it, too, and - trust me - I’m no virtuoso.

@@SK-kb2wc - It’s a combination of gear, starting with the wood the guitar is made of, pick-ups, a saturated tube amp and most likely a compressor or sustainer of some kind. The proximity of pick-ups to the amp can also be a factor. I’ve got a couple of videos of Gary playing Parisienne Walkways and that one long note dies far sooner than it should and he has to hit the string again. If it was all Gary’s technique that allowed him to sustain that note for so long on most occasions, that would never happen.

That sophisticated "big wave"surfer sound is still going strong...talk about when you need to Chill- If you listen to 1971 LOVE, Brian Mclean mastered the spanish /rock thing as his mother was a (where you shake beads together- cast??? and (OK?
