Where did the Greek come from? When Alexander conquered the whole area, before the Roman Empire began, from Egypt to the border of what’s now India, they imposed Greek as the lingua franca across the region. While the conquered peoples continued to speak their own languages, they learned Greek to communicate for trade, when traveling, etc. Just as English is now the common language because of the influence of the British Empire, so Greek was by Jesus’ time. (This was called the Hellenistic era, which lasted through the time of Roman rule. The Hellenes were the Greeks.) Therefore, most scholars believe that Jesus spoke some Greek. Ancient Nazareth was only about 5 or 6 km from the cosmopolitan city of Sepphoris, where Greek would have been spoken. As a carpenter, Jesus and Joseph, as craftsmen, would likely have known enough Greek to communicate with those from the city who hired them. The Christian texts as they’ve come down through time were written down in Greek so they could be read by people across the Roman world. Most scholars do agree that normally, Jesus would have spoken Aramaic, which is very close to Hebrew, and used Hebrew in worship and for reading the Torah. But it’s highly likely that he, like many indigenous craftsmen of the area, spoke some Greek. Not that he taught in Greek. What’s hilarious to me, as someone of mixed Christian and Jewish heritage, is that these gentlemen are busy arguing over ancient Jewish prophecy and what it meant, while denigrating and negating the people from whom their texts originated. The development of their ideas of God and prophecy all came from Jewish tradition (which itself developed from indigenous pagan traditions centuries before, then was influenced by Babylonian, Egyptian, and Greek traditions, but I digress). Meanwhile, both of these later traditions are busy insulting the Jewish people, while imposing their sheer ignorance in order to follow their own interpretations of that tradition. The Jews don’t seek to impose their beliefs or practices on anyone else, but those who distort the ancient tradition can only denigrate the Jewish one to justify themselves. I personally don’t care what anyone else believes. Just respect each other. These arguments are useless and worthless. They’ve been going on for over a thousand years. What argument do they think they’re going to make that hasn’t been made millions of times before? The only result is a headache, which I now have from listening to them yell and talk over each other.
