Fun reaction. Impossible not to fall with Alex and Henry. The book is really good, definitely worth reading. If I was going to use one word to describe their relationship.... It would be chemistry. You could feel it through the whole movie.

I have binge-watched the movie, the excerpts, and every reaction video I can find. I still choke up at all the ways the two actors convey feelings toward each other with subtle facial expressions, which I only come to notice after repeated viewings.

Maypole. Fertility pagan symbol in the UK. People dance around with ribbons connected at the top. And it happens in May

ahhhhh i'm late but i'm so glad i found your reaction, this is so cute 😍🥰 edited to add: about your query at the end about the time setting: the book was conceived in 2016 and written in 2017, partly as a sort of fantasy version of politics to get away from the reality of the time, and then it was published in 2019. so afaik it's originally set around that time (leading up to the 2020 election)

Loved all your commentary at the end of the video. your integration comment is so insightful! This was based on a book published a few years ago, so Alex's mom was first elected in 2016 ( presumably rather than Trump).

In the long history of humankind, sex, love, and marriage were more often than not, did NOT intersect. People didn't marry for love, particularly royalty, but to cement relations between different nations or to produce the next heir. (And queens were killed because they failed to bear a child or bear a MALE child. The quip about them locking up Henry has certainly happened in England's history.) There is also an equally long history were publicity could easily be managed and people just didn't go public with things that were thought to be bad (thereby continuing the ability to claim said things as bad). In the days before our instant ability to world-wide publicize things, public figures were often able to carry on affairs of either or both genders quite openly but still completely covered up. In the bible, King David's relationship with Jonathan is quite open, at least on the pages, a relationship which gets more discussion than all the other mostly heterosexual ones. Alexander the Great also was at least bi. It was said of the many affairs of Julius Caesar that he was every woman's husband and every man's wife. Shakespeare wrote love sonnets to individuals of both sexes. Both Washington and Lincoln had what appear to be long affairs or at least matter of the heart (Washington with the young dashing Marquis de Lafayette. Before his marriage, Lincoln shared a bed for four years with handsome young store owner, Joshua Speed, in Springfield, IL. There are passionate although not specific sexual letters for both presidents.) Eleanor Roosevelt also had a long deeply emotional correspondence with Lorena Hickok, again based on letters which today we would see as sexual although stuffy old historians will often say "no, no, no. They will claim that where the two were writing about passionate kisses, they were just being poetic. VP Dick Cheney under the second George Bush had an openly lesbian daughter, Mary Cheney. This was just ignored by the anti-queer GOP at the time. Many many famous actors, heart-throbs in the public's minds, were forced into sham marriages or sometimes had their careers sidetracked. The RWRB book has a lot more instances, via excepts of letters, of other same-sex affairs. But for the vast number of examples, as long as the people involved keep things relatively out of the public's eye, everyone was quite willing to look the other way. Oscar Wilde went to prison with forced labor by being openly gay, but would have gotten away with it if he had shut up about "the love that dare not speak its name." Alan Turing, whose landmark work paved the way for computers and brokw the German codes during WWII and thus saved the day, was naively public about his homosexuality after the war, and was chemically castrated due to the harsh criminal laws in England at the time. In America at least, there is also the long history of the Presidents' children being shielded from the eyes of the press, so what they do or love gets little notice, should they choose to be hidden.

I really enjoyed your reaction. I'm glad you liked the movie. I haven't read the book but I also think it's a really good movie and the lead actors were perfect for these roles and they did a very good performance. I'm not american but I've found Uma Thurman's character overacted in some parts of the movie, maybe it was her accent but I can't be specific about what it was but I didn't feel her character.

@@haninamureactsyeah, I think they mentioned it so much in the movie because their heights were also "a thing" in the book. Except, Henry is 4 inches taller than Alex, in the book.... Whereas, in the movie, Henry is 2 inches shorter. Funnily enough, some people have mentioned in the scene where they're kissing after the red room... And Alex sits down on the back of the sofa(before being pushed by Henry down onto the cushions of the sofa)... They are much closer to their canon heights. 👀 I love the fandom for catching these tiny details. Lmao!!!

Despite security concerns, the president and his family can move about at times with secret service keeping a close watch. A president will sometimes walk through a crowd and talk to ordinary people. A party on the grounds of the White House would be much safer. All the attendees would have been thoroughly screened as they entered, and with such limited access, very safe by comparison to other public events.

My only criticism for this movie is that they didn't place the blame for the leaked emails on the Richards campaign as it was in the book. That explained Texans voting against a candidate that wronged a son of Texas. Him being gay was less of an issue than a Republican disrespecting one of their own. While Alex's work in Texas made a difference, the email fiasco was the tipping point for a usually conservative state. Don't Mess With Texas.

Dick Cheney was vice president under George W. Bush from 2001-2009. Despite his hard-right politics and it happening a bit earlier when things hadn't changed as much as they have since then, his one daughter, Mary, was openly queer, and married her partner. Cheney himself supported gay marriage, despite his maintaining his other typical conservative views. And we didn't hear much about this, despite no one keeping it a secret.

This is an alternative universe, where instead of trump being elected in 2016, a woman was, not Hillary but Ellen. The story takes place over late 2019 to the election of 2020 in November. Many things different, including no covid this whole year of these events.

For those of us outside the world of royalty, it is hard to grasp how tight the restrictions are. There is a movie about the young Queen Victoria, who was not originally in line for the crown. When King IV (I think) died, she suddenly found herself thrust into the position. Upon the news, her life completely changed with all sorts of restrictions she hated. For instance, she was at the time a healthy young woman but from that point on, she had to have a royal attendant hold her hand while going up or down stairs. You'd think she being queen could demand the rules be lifted, but she couldn't - it was royal protocol, locked in place by a centuries old tradition. But on the other hand, as fiction, this story could nudge the rules a bit one way or the other as needed. In this case, they needed to keep it tight enough to make it a problem for Henry. And I think the backgrounds are really allegories for how queer people can be locked up in invisible towers, some of it of their own makings due to their upbringing.
