Khalid Latif's reality in a post-9/11 world.
Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO
One morning Khalid Latif was asleep in his bed when he was awakened by two FBI agents. Khalid remembers the agents telling him, “You’re just too good to be true, and we want you to know we’re watching you.” At the time, Khalid was an honored member of the NYPD and traveled around the world for the US State Department. He had met with President Obama, Pope Francis, and the Dalai Lama. This has been his reality in a post-9/11 world.

Detallado let's pretend that's objectively true- that no matter what Muslim country I went to I was treated with disrespect- that does not change my call as a Christian: love my neighbor. Love those that hate me. Do good to everyone without expectation of getting something in return.

It is dehumanizing. Believe me, even if you try to be the most balanced person in the world, you will always leave the airport with a bit of resentment and sadness after a "random check". I was in Spain lately and I was the only person who had his luggage checked. Of course, airport security had to make jokes about me and they didn't know that I understand Spanish.

That's the worst part for me not only is the inherent mistreatment bad, but the casual "roll off the back" jokes too. Like, come on man.. if you know it's wrong talk to THE PERSON IT'S EFFECTING, and bring it up in the world around you. Not enough people speak up about the issue; the more that do, the quicker we as a species can help abate it.

Incoming ignorant conservatives claiming this is liberal propaganda.
@_badmadsadlad
@_badmadsadlad 7 жыл бұрын
Well, this IS liberal propaganda. I agree with what is said in the video, but maybe you need to go check what the definition of the word "propaganda" is before, ironically, calling half of the people in the United States "ignorant" based on your own preconceived notions of them. You are doing exactly what this video calls to stop. I am an anti-Trump Republican. I fought, debated, and stood up for people who felt marginalized in my University by the types of people who supported Trump. Just because I am a conservative (which, by the way, is a general term referring to every viewpoint right of neutral) does not mean I am ignorant, nor does it mean I am a racist or a bigot, nor does it mean I ever supported Trump. Good people and nasty people exist on BOTH sides of the aisle.

^ What would you consider this video if not propaganda? Propaganda by definition is not a negative thing. Propaganda is simply biased information presented in a specific way to further the cause of political goals. Equality among all people in America despite religion or race sounds like a good political goal to me. I stated "I agree with what is said in this video" for a reason.
@ixis
@ixis 7 жыл бұрын
Because English isn't machine language. There's subtleties, especially in English. Everyone knows what you're saying, but they also know that you know what was originally stated. And since we know that, and you know that, you've resorted to using the literal meaning of propaganda to make a point, failing to realize that everyone understands that anyway. And since people understand that, your point comes across for what it truly is: a manic defense against your ego to assert an opinion that doesn't exist. You need the negative connotation of propaganda so you can feel that you aren't bad for your political opinions. I don't know you, but I'd guess you're only doing this because you feel persecuted. Which means either you do represent the horrible things you ascribe to the opinions of the right, or you don't but still feel the need to beat yourself up anyway. That's why I think your comment was bad.

remy pereira "perhaps they dislike Islam, or think racial profiling is effective. I think that people who hold these opinions aren't necessarily bigoted" This video is not about Islam or the supposed effectiveness of racial profiling, this video is about this Muslim Chaplain and the emotional struggles he deals with as a American Muslim man living in the US. If you dislike the video it's clear you don't sympathise with him or his experience and you know as well as I that that lack of empathy would most likely be a result of bigotry towards Muslims.

still_guns religion isn't the problem. All popular religions teach peace and love. It's extremists that you are talking about. Might I add, people that hold the same beliefs as you are more of a problem than the religion, but the reason I'm not slating you specifically about it is because you choose to not let it impact how you treat people, which I think is completely cool. But it's unreal how some people are treated because of the acts of others across the world.
@Wajz3

Yea, all popular religions teach peace and love in an absolutely perfect world. Not in our world. Extremists are stemmed from religious fueled hatred. Religion turns into an overly passionate lifestyle in which all other people that do not follow the same god are unholy and on the side of the devil. Separating extremism from religion is bullshit, because they are one in the same.

It astounds me how different America became after 9/11. How one event effected so many people's lives, it effected culture, law, and society. People have been murdered for it, sent to war, countless families have lost loved ones on that day and since, laws have been enacted to prevent terrorism, more laws are in question to help all the first responders who have cancer and are dying or have died due to their service that day, airport security completely changed, Muslims who previously hadn't been experiencing racism felt that drastically change. That day effected so many people in so many different awful ways. Keep it up Vox. It's so great that you are starting important conversations.

Corporations, Raytheon, GE, Vivendi, Pepsico, Monsanto, Disney, etc. The leaders of these and other companies profit off our fear, and their meta narrative drives you to buy their products that sate your fear's calming. Body Scanners, anti-muslim movies, cheap sugary food. I would never do this, but the corporations that I purchase from, pay money to politicians to pass laws that force the average joes working in govt. to do this.

I was in France in the international airport for a connecting flight, with my disabled mother and my sister. (They both wear hijabs ) The wheel chair for my mother was running late, and we were going to miss our flight, so we went to the office where there were some employees working and asked for a wheel chair, they looked at us once and said nothing and ignored us as we asked them (in french, and english so that we made sure that could understand what we were saying), we figured that they were busy and waited until they could help us, then sat down. Then about 2 minutes later an white elderly person came to the desk asked for a wheel chair and they helped her and got her a wheel chair in about 5 minutes. We came to the desk again and asked for a wheel chair and they called security on us, but lucky for us the security officer was Algerian and when we explained what happened he finally got us a wheel chair. Though I don't know what their intentions were, I will never have a connecting flight in France again.

I previously thought that to prevent terrorism at any cost, searching the belongings of those men should be done. Now I regret having to hastily assume those activities would solely be beneficial. For this society to be more pluralistic and egalitarian, losing the prejudice of wrongfully labeled people will be key and I promise to do so.
