Dressing modestly around my mother is a bit of a sore topic. When I adopted a higher standard of modesty in my dress, my mother took it personally. It was especially intense looking for a wedding dress because it's important to me to cover from my shoulders to my knees, which includes at least short sleeves. We spent time shopping for something to wear with my dress and the fact that it couldn't be sheer was a big problem for her.

I don't understand why anyone would tell you what you should or shouldn't wear, regardless of anyone's religious ideology. You are a fully formed adult who has made the decision to dress a certain way based on what makes you comfortable and happy with yourself and your religious beliefs. I'm only loosely religious myself, but just basic decency tells me that I should respect other people's feelings and beliefs, and that includes how they choose to dress. Thank you for sharing so much wonderful content and helping others to understand and learn more about your culture and beliefs 😊

I was raised to dress modest, so it's really feels weird if I wear anything not modest at home. in front of my mom or dad or siblings. like I don't wear leggings or tight pants without a long shirt over them. nothing too short either, the shortest I ever wore was like a hand length over my ankles. People might think it's too much but it's actually pretty comfy. I usually wear those long sleeping gawns, very breathable and comfy, or anything as long as the pants are a bit wide

Probably a totally different point of view. My mum is a "soft" Christian and I'm an atheist. I was raised in a very body-positive environment where nudity is something natural and not a big deal, so me and my mum have no problem even seeing each other naked. For example, if one of us is taking a shower and the other needs to take something from the bathroom we just knock the door, ask permission and enter 😁

I have zero restrictions on what I wear around my mum. I have been fully naked around my mum and in the past, when we’re were living together, I have even used the bathroom around my mum. The reason being is that she is my mum and in our opinion there should be no modesty between a parent and their child 👨‍👩‍👦

This is reasonable. We have to respect our parents or anyone that is uncomfortable seeing those parts , even if it doesn't sin upon anyone islamically for dressing up quite revealing or showing to much skin I think people shouldn't really do this despite being allowed to do it so in my opinion I think we should dress more appropriate infront of anyone (except if we have to do this for a doctor , nurse , etc.)

When I was growing up, I never felt comfortable dressing in front of other women. As a child, a teen or as an adult I have always felt my body is MY personal space and later when I became muslim I didn't feel shame any more for not wantingbto share my body with others. I was ALWAYS made to be a muslim, I just didn't know it

My mom and dad let me wear whatever I wanted as I am my own person, but my mom would offer opinions if she thought something just didn’t look good. Me personally shorts and tank tops were fine. However I’ve had other family members voice their opinions on what I should wear as if they thought they knew better than my parents. And I loved shopping with my mom.

I love both of y'all and think it's especially sweet that only your husband is allowed to see you in your full beauty because no other man deserves that! Also your endeavor to start with the hand coverings is very bold and I hope the gloves you find are comfortable :) As for what you said about women getting to choose based on their religion and personal understandings in their own faith, I LOVE how you phrased it and made it clear that everyone's situation is different. 😊 As far as me personally, I don't expose anything from neck to ankle, other than my arms, in front of anyone even my family. Head covering is hard to navigate, though -- living in Alabama, being overweight, and working in a restaurant kitchen -- it gets really hot. I shouldn't be putting out excuses, but, you really make me feel like I should try harder. Anyways, I love y'all both and hope you're happy and healthy 💜

Just want to say I’m a Catholic girl and I love your channel! I hate how people say dressing modest is anti-empowerment for women when it should be all up to our decision and what we feel comfortable in. For my very close family (like parents) personally I’m okay with showing up to mid thigh and arms below the elbow but absolutely no chest! Around extended family, friends, or anyone outside I cover down to my ankles, feet and to wrists (unless it’s extremely hot then I’m okay with elbows and below!) and definitely no chest. I think it’s empowering to say that my body belongs to me only. And it’s something I greatly respect about your culture and religion, but I also respect others at the same time who don’t feel comfortable dressing modestly because as you said, no one has a right to tell women how to dress and be comfortable which is spot on! Even if our preference is modesty, it should be respected 🤍

I have very much been enjoying listening to the two of you and your clear explanations of Islam and modesty. I am an older woman and my mother recently passed away. My mom, sister, and I have always been modest in front of each other due I think to culture and the times we were brought up in. Of course, as my mother aged my sister and I had to help her in ways that became more like taking care of a child but we all knew that it was for her comfort and health so it was not about violating her privacy and modesty then. My religion does not particularly mention modesty in dress but it does stress that clothing and lifestyle choices should be plain, practical, and show good stewardship of resources. Clothing should not take a lot of attention in terms of time spent purchasing, amounts of money spent, or time spent in adorning oneself that could be used for better purposes. I have always felt the implication is that worrying too much about the kind of adornment it takes to dress immodestly falls into that category of wasting time. So clothing is necessarily modest because that's the most practical and plain. I hope that makes sense!

As im a Pakistani muslim and my mom is quite fussy when it comes to me uncovering more than customarily appropriate like once i wore a t shirt with pajamas at home and she always has to make a certain face like as if im dressing like this in the presence of nah mehrams which im not and I researched on the bare minimum of the parts that a muslim women should cover in front of their mehrams and it is just from navel to knees and different schools of thoughts have more areas required to cover but yeah i would like to have the luxury atleast wear something non desi at my house lol 😭

I’m not Muslim but I still dress modestly in front of my mom. For example, when I’m alone in my apartment sometimes I’ll just wear a sports bra and short shorts. I’d never wear that in front of her or any of my family. I always wear modest tops (typically a T shirt or blouse that covers my cleavage) and shorts that cover everything important. Even though it’s not a religion thing for me it’s a respect thing and my mom doesn’t want or need to see every part of my body

I think it's important to teach especially our daughters the importance of body positivity. It's dangerous to one's mental health to be made ashamed of our own body. So many people have issues/hang-ups regarding their body & it's sad. Everyone needs to love their body & wear whatever they feel comfortable with. From a string bikini to totally & completely covered if they wish, out of choice, not out of shame. Our household currently is only females so none of us have a problem simply being in our underwear, but yes it would be different if males were present. When it comes to matters involving one's health/adl care, any & all modesty does not apply.

this is such an interesting question! i am not religious at all; i would consider myself agnostic. however, i find myself gravitating toward clothing that is looser and covers more because it's more comfortable. i've always hated bathing suits; i just personally find them uncomfortable, and will at least put a shirt and shorts on over. i don't quite know how to explain it, but it would not feel respectful to me personally to dress in revealing clothes around my parents.

When people say they are in no place to tell you to do a certain thing, I am not sure if that’s how it works since Muslims should be guiding others to follow the path of Allah. However when you feel offended that somebody told you to do something a certain way, don’t listen to them but listen to Allah. If you love Allah more than this world then you should only do whatever Allah has commanded you to do. So there it is, end of discussion. If you don’t wanna follow people’s advice then just follow Allah’s command.

I am not religious, but I practice a degree of modesty anyway, especially around my family. I just do not feel comfortable being exposed around my family, so I will avoid even wearing tank tops or shorts around them, and will choose to wear flowy pants and a t-shirt in the summer months. I don't know why I do it, but I would say it's part just not wanting to give my family access to my body in that way, and part respect for my family.

Sadly I no longer go swimming because where I live trans "women" have an abuse right to enter female only spaces and I cannot accept that. The hijab is harder. My mum had strong feelings against it and I get massive panic attacks when I am in hijab. All I can do at this point is pray to Allah for strength and I ask anyone who reads this to pray for me. I want to be the best Muslim I can be but due to brain issues I am failing completly with even learning the prayers in Arabic.
