„Картинки с выставки" -- Воспоминание о Викторе Гартмане) ist eine Komposition von Modest Mussorgski aus dem Jahr 1874, die allgemein als ein Musterbeispiel für Programmmusik gesehen wird.

Is this greatest live solo piano performance of all time??? Even after all these 62 years since Richter gave that incredible performance? Oh to have been in the audience in Sofia that night! Such history was recorded that night. Someone mentioned a bum note in the intro piece. Who cares with what you hear AND FEEL through the whole mind blowing 30 odd minutes. Still one for the ages & my favourite live solo classical piano recording, & clearly the only piano version of Pictures one should play today. He never made it to the U.S. till 1960. Geez, what the west missed with what Richter was doing behind the iron curtain in the 1950s. Definitely one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century.

I wore out the vinyl on this. In the spring of 1979, as a senior in high school, I listened to it every evening for months. Almost impossibly perfect, wrong note and all.

The greatest performance of Pictures ever. Richter tore this up in 1958: Kiev, Moscow, Budapest. But this Sofia...Good Lord!

The incomparable and much admired Sviatoslav Richter certainly made this great composition his own. I had actually intended to listen to it in the background, while doing something else. Impossible !!! Did not want to miss a single note of this outstanding performance. Thank you davidhertzberg for this GEM !

hearing this back in '62. one of the definitive moments in my life. the piece, performance, is always with me somewhere. when i'm thinking about a certain turn of music, or the way music works at all on my self and psyche.

+notBridget Richter could indeed play with awesome force, yet he was also capable of playing with magical delicacy (the unhatched chicks) and intimacy. He gives everything to Mussorgskys Pictures, every scene is depicted with tremendous vividness. One can forgive a few splashes in the light of such a visceral live performance.

Amazing. Really, it wouldn't be the same without the coughs! A live performance, so live I feel like I have a front-row seat. Different, of course, but just as exciting as Firkusny's. Had the privilege of hearing him at the Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena. These two pianists are exceptionally brilliant! AND, Barry Douglas; not the recording, but his live performance at the Tchaikovsky Competition! (via tape, courtesy of PBS). Such a long comment -- pardon me.

If Maurice Ravel were to live to hear Richter's interpretation, he would have regretted transcribing this piece for orchestra which despite its array of winds, strings and brass, still resonates under par the Richter scale.

Considering this amazing historic performance from Richter, it becomes apparent how unnecessary the bloated multi-layered transcription by Horowitz was from 1951.
