Pour beaucoup d'amateurs de musique, elle est, avec l'ouverture non moins spectaculaire du Concerto pour piano de Grieg, un symbole de toute la musique romantique. Avec le thème tourbillonnant de l'introduction, Tchaïkovski ouvre la voie à près de trente minutes de musique romantique pour piano, durant lesquelles le pianiste, à grands gestes puissants, joue des mélodies pleines de charme pour faire rendre à l'instrument toute sa beauté. Tchaïkovski commença la composition de son Concerto PourPiano en si bémol vers la fin de 1874. Il venait alors de passer une année relativement paisible. En janvier, il avait achevé son Quatuor à cordes no 2 et, de juin à septembre, il s'était consacré à son opéra ‘Vakula le forgeron’. Une fois terminé son Concerto pour piano, il entra dans une nouvelle phase créatrice, laquelle donnera le jour aux quatre symphonies Nos. 3 à 6, aux musiques de ballet du ‘Lac des cygnes’, de ‘La Belle au bois dormant’ et de ‘Casse-Noisette’, à l'opéra ‘Eugène Onéguine’, à l'Ouverture 1812, à deux autres concertos pour piano, un concerto pour violon, et maintes autres oeuvres. Le Concerto Pour Piano en si bémol étant la première expérience de Tchaïkovski dans le domaine de la forme concerto, il était plus que jamais inquiet des réactions des critiques. Bien qu'étant lui-même un excellent pianiste, il jugeait particulièrement difficiles les prouesses techniques qu'exigeait cette œuvre. Le jour où il crut bon de demander conseil à son ami Nicolas Rubinstein (1835-1881), il semble que Tchaïkovski ait été particulièrement mal avisé. Ainsi, Tchaïkovski écrira : « D’après lui, mon Concerto est sans intérêt, parfaitement injouable. Les Passages en sont tellement morcelés, inarticulés et pauvres d'écriture qu'il est même inutile d'essayer de les améliorer. La composition elle-même est pitoyable, plate, vulgaire. Ici et là, j'ai plagié d'autres compositeurs. Une ou deux pages méritent Peut-être d'être sauvées, mais le reste est soit bon à jeter, soit à réécrire entièrement. » A l'époque, Tchaïkovski en fut profondément blessé et s'enfuit littéralement de chez son ami. Ayant compris qu'il s'était montré trop rude, Rubinstein le rejoignit pour tenter de le réconforter. Il lui proposa même de diriger la première représentation publique si le compositeur voulait bien modifier son œuvre. Mais Tchaïkovski ne voulut pas l'entendre de cette oreille, et refusa de changer une seule note. De surcroît, à la place de Rubinstein, il choisit le jeune pianiste Serge Taneiev. Mais en 1875, une fois terminé le travail d'orchestration de l'œuvre, il remplaça Taneiev par Hans von Bülow, fervent admirateur de Tchaïkovski : ainsi le compositeur parviendrait-il plus aisément à obtenir ce qu'il souhaitait. C'est ainsi que von Bülow airigea la première, le 25 octobre 1875, à Boston. La première de Boston fut un vif succès et von Bülow fit aussitôt parvenir à Tchaïkovski un télégramme lui annonçant la bonne nouvelle; par la même voie, le compositeur lui retourna ses félicitations. Toutefois, les éloges n'étaient pas unanimes. Ainsi, le grand critique musical de Boston, John Dwight, s'interrogeait : «Comment est-il possible d'aimer une telle musique?» Quoi qu'il en soit, l'oeuvre était d'ores et déjà assurée d'un succès durable. Nicolas Rubinstein ayant eu l'élégance de reconnaître son erreur, les deux amis ne tardèrent pas à renouer. Aussi ce fut lui qui dirigea la première à Moscou trois ans plus tard, le 22 mars 1878, pour la plus grande joie de Tchaïkovski, qui, lors de la composition de cette œuvre, avait eu en tête sa brillante technique au piano: il ne lui fit pas faux bond. Curieusement, bien qu'ayant refusé catégoriquement devant Rubinstein de modifier la moindre note, il autorisa d'autres pianistes, comme Edouard Dannreuther et Alexandre Siloti, à apporter à sa partition des modifications conséquentes. C'est ainsi que la force du thème de l'ouverture doit beaucoup à Dannreuther. Sviatoslav Richter et Evgeny Mravinsky donne à leur interprétation une grandeur, une majesté hautaine que l’on ne retrouve nulle part ailleurs. L’osmose entre le soliste et le chef est absolument parfaite. Le jeu de Richter, d’une virtuosité infinie, d’une puissance lapidaire anti-théâtrale, frappe par la précision absolue des attaques, et cette sonorité de bronze pour le moins intimidante. L’accompagnement de Mravinsky, très « grand seigneur » est, lui aussi, d’une totale absence d’attendrissement, et on comprend fort bien ce qu’Haitink veut dire lorsqu’il raconte avoir vu, à Leningrad , Yevgeny Mravinsky se tenir devant son orchestre comme un général prussien.. For me, Richter is the only one, that makes sense of the entire concert. It’s not a set piece of great moments, but actually enjoyable from the beginning to the end.

Richter is the greatest pianist ever

Long time ago in 1969 I was 6 waiting for my father to pick me up from the lobby of the Tashkent music school, when some tremendous sound stunned me for few minutes... It was an introduction to this great Concerto played by Maestro S. Richter. Since then I fell in love with classical music ever after... Best ever interpretation of the piece. Bravo !!!

Many years ago, when I was stationed in West Berlin as a member of the Royal Air Force during the Cold War, I bought from East Berlin the Supraphon recording from Czechoslovakia of Richter's interpretation of the Tchaikovsky No. 1 piano concerto. I am still convinced that his is the best, and am delighted to find it on KZfaq. A spellbinding performance as near perfect as can be imagined, especially fine with Mravinsky conducting. Thank you.

Maravilloso. Richter toca mucho mejor y más relajado que en la versión famosa con Karajan. Gracias a usted y a KZfaq por encontrar esta joya. Suena mucho más 'rusa' la orquesta gracias al maravilloso autócrata de Mravinsky. Es la orquesta perfecta para este concierto. Me gusta incluso más que la versión con Gilels y Reiner, otra joya absoluta. Richter toma más riesgos, y lo hace relajado, con esa única característica suya de meterse dentro de la pieza, y dejar que el compositor hable, sin distraernos con el virtuosismo del intérprete. Richter es sin duda, en varios repertorios, el pianista más grande de los últimos 50 años. Me encanta su canal!

It is difficult to outdo this performance. I believe this rendition is the well-known live performance that took place in Leningrad on October 9, 1954 although the remastering seems to have changed the sound significantly. In addition to Sviatoslav Richter, Evgeny Mravinsky and the Leningraders should be commended for this magnificent collaborative effort. Mravinsky was a great conductor rivaling the best that the last millennium could produce; seek him out if you get a chance. Oh... almost forgot; thanks also to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky for composing this masterpiece.

Sviatoslav Richter is without doubt the greatest pianist of the modern era. (I say the modern era because I have no way to compare the genius and virtuosity of Richter with, say, a Franz Lizst). He and the music become ONE! Richter's musical genius can only be aptly described by quoting the great Irish poet, William Butler Yeats, with the following lines from his poem "Among Schoolchildren": "O chestnut-tree, great-rooted blossomer, Are you the leaf, the blossom or the bole? O body swayed to music, O brightening glance, How can we know the dancer from the dance?"

El concierto es famoso por su bella introducción, pero he oído de hombres que entran en desasosiego al escuchar la continuación del primer movimiento... Poco sé de música, es decir entiendo que hay cierta lógica con las notas musicales o alguna estructura fuera de mi conocimiento. Pero cualquiera que aprecie se percata de la lucha que existe entre lo grácil y la exasperación del primer movimiento. Parece al hombre que encuentra la paz y pronto la pierde y le busca con intensidad y agón y vuelve aquella búsqueda una constante... Tchaikovsky, muy bueno para dar un toque épico a sus obras, que pareciera incluir fanfarrias victoriosas, hace uso de su talento para acabar la lucha del primer movimiento. Lejos queda ya aquel melódico comienzo...El oyente se torna a esa musical expresión de sentimientos fuertes y nobles y algunos conciliadores entre ambos. Richter, muy bueno para apreciar el contexto de los conciertos para piano, Mravinsky un director brutal...Nadie puede negar disfrutar con el mejor de los ahíncos el final triunfante del primer movimiento...Eriza la piel..! Qué alegría que Dios nos de a estos genios, y a Tchaikovksy como compositor, perseverante siempre, dejando como legado de su vida, la música, su música ejemplo de su vida...Siempre criticado en su época pero premiado con su imagen en el salón de la fama del repertorio clásico, y del romántico.

J'ajoute à mon commentaire précédent que toute la "manière" de Richter d'envisager la musique est indépendante des distinctions de style et d'époque. Il dit ce qu'il y a dans la musique : chant, rythme, puissance, douceur, silences. Ce qui en ressort de phénoménal, c'est l'articulation de tous ces éléments en une UNITE de pensée et de sensibilité. Bref, c'est notre propre respiration vitale. J'aime beaucoup aussi la version Richter-Karajan, moins équilibrée peut-être, plus lente (Ier mouvement) et davantage pensée à la Karajan...
