After seeing someone on a long haul flight who was sick and didn’t have anything he could take for it, I basically bring a small pharmacy with me - bandaids, cough drops, ibuprofen, anti nausea pills. My nose gets really dry, so I bring a nasal saline spray too. My pharmacy is overkill sometimes, but it has come in handy more than once.

My niece flew from LHR to SeaTac via Iceland last Christmas when a passenger had a massive heart attack. There were 3 physicians on the plane, and one actually carried a bag of fluids (Lactated Ringers) with a line and needle that he used and thus saved the man’s life. Apparently, he said he always flies with them just for emergencies like that.

RN here. Whether or not you're having/eating a snack with peanuts/peanut butter in it causing an anaphylactic reaction in someone with a peanut allergy depends on the severity of their allergy & proximity to you so it's always better to just avoid eating anything with peanuts in it on the plane or even b4 boarding just to be safe. I highly recommend wearing compression socks on any flight longer than 2 hours, even if you're young to help prevent blood clots/swelling. Hydration is also important.

Most dentists have, at no cost, toothbrushes that have paste on the bristles. They’re great for travel. They’re are usually in their restrooms for those who want to brush before their appointment. If you don’t see any, ask. Most offices have them.

I have a fleecy black beanie that I pull over my eyes instead of using an eye mask, it goes over my ears to stop the earplugs falling out and it keeps my head nice and toasty when sleeping on a frigid plane. If I don't want to be disturbed, I stick a "Don't disturb" note to the beanie (I use the safety pin always pinned to the beanie) and noise-cancelling earphones fits right over the beanie. I have some limited vision from the bottom of the beanie which is great to be aware of what is happening around me without officially waking up and then being engaged by those around me.

Yes! Peanut allergies are a real thing and just the scent of peanut butter next to someone with a peanut allergy could send them into anaphylactic shock! It happened to a child I was caring for, just from the scent of peanut butter in the room!

My son is anaphylactic to peanuts, so we request a "buffer zone" when we fly. This is where the flight attendant asks the people in the immediate area around us to refrain from eating peanuts/peanut products. There is mixed information about airborne/smell, but peanut "dust" can transfer, depending on the product, and we would rather not take chances on a plane, for any type of reaction, and very much appreciate when others help in that endeavour. Thank you for your video and for bringing up the topic. :)

The aircraft's Environmental Control System filters and recirculates the air in the cabin, so you shouldn't have to worry about the full plane in theory. But contaminated air in your immediate vicinity could certainly pass you on its way to the filters. With something as dangerous as peanut allergies, it's completely understandable why you wouldn't want to take the chance!

@@ProjectUntethered I guess I would question whether the eater can guarantee they won't get peanut butter on their hands, then touch seats or bathroom door, etc. A bit like cold germs. Unfortunately, because airlines can only request the people directly around us to abstain, we are taking our chances with the rest of the plane. The onus is on me to teach my son to clean the area we sit in as soon as we board, wash his hands regularly and be cautious of warning signs. And we carry plenty of Epi-pens. :)
@ProjectUntethered

Wow, that sounds like it can add a bit of extra stress to the experience. After reading everyone’s comments, my takeaway is to do your best to respect others with the food you take on a plane. That said, it’s probably not necessary to get overly paranoid, because the people with allergies typically know they have allergies and have a plan to protect themselves.

So I'm not a bright color person whatsoever I'd be happy to dress as goth the whole trip however I recently found that when I travel it's almost always best for spotting my stuff to have all bright colors preferably light bright, like light bright blues, greens, yellows including bags. Then when it's time to tidy up the plane or find something in your bag, it pops out. I've spent so much time searching for black items that disappear into the abis of a black bag on a dimmed flight. Game changer to shift to colored items.

Another thing similar to the microfibre towel is a silk sleeping bag liner. Ostensibly for outdoors types to add a warm and hygienic (eg washable) layer to sleeping bag for camping. But silk is super warm for its size/weight and they pack down to the size of a can of coke. I use mine as a mega thin sleeping bag in cheap hostels in hot counties as I feel cleaner sleeping in it than their bedclothes. You can throw it over yourself or even use it as a scarf. Amazing things and I’ll never travel without mine.

Yes, peanut allergies are real. The oil from the peanuts can bond with molecules in the air and all someone that is VERY sensitive to peanuts needs to do is inhale this air and then have a reaction which can be immediate or delayed. I believe this is a reason that many airlines no longer serve peanuts.

You can also pack a meal and keep it cold with ice packs and bring it through TSA. Pour out any melted water prior to inspection or your container/bag of ice will be subject to the 3-ounce liquid rules. Ice cubes melt faster than a brick of frozen water. Even though they are sealed, "blue ice"/gel packs are subject to the 3-ounce liquid rule when they begin to melt and "sludh" can be felt. Don't wrap your food in foil. It interferes with the xray machine and you will be pulled aside while a TSA agent opens your bag AND unwraps your food with the same gloves they've worn for their entire shift.

I use earplanes ear plugs, I have issues when taking off and landing where my ears hurt. Chewing gum, yawning, and all that stuff has never helped, since I starter using these ear plugs I have not had any issues and they block the sound. they come in their own small case and even have a neck strap (like those eyeglass neck strap) so you won't loose them when you take them out of an ear to hear the stewardess telling you whats to eat :). I also take a small ziplock bag or 2 and a small 'rollup bag' just in case they are needed. Bring sanitizer wipes so you can wipe down the tray and seat arms. I use a fishing vest instead of a 'fanny pack', I just put the small things in ziplocks so it is easy to take out of the pockets going through the checkpoint.

The problem with locks on a backpack etc is that they aren't that much use because you can open any zip with a ballpoint pen. Perhaps they are OK if you are walking with your pack so someone can't easily get into it from behind you. But if you leave your pack it takes seconds to break into it. Perhaps you could ask your seat neighbours to keep an eye on your pack while you're on the toilet. Doesn't hurt to ask. When you get back to your seat thank them and casually pick up your pack to have a look for sanitiser etc so you can check it over.

I like the comment about packing a change of clothes (nothing too fancy), but you skipped the most important reason why. You need the change in case the airlines misplaces your luggage or it misses a transfer. Consequently, you can find yourself without a change of clothes while you are waiting for your bag to be picked up or delivered to you. I had that happen on my first trip to Europe - but I never had that issue again even though bags have been delayed several times with my small carry on.
@ProjectUntethered
@ProjectUntethered Жыл бұрын
That’s a very good point! It’s also smart to buy your flight with a credit card that offers travel insurance. That way if your luggage is delayed, you can buy yourself a new outfit. In some countries, I believe the airline would pay for this as well. Recently my wife had a delay and had to stop for a night without her checked luggage, and the airline paid her for a new outfit (as well as a hefty bonus!)
@michelle7352
@michelle7352 Жыл бұрын
More than once my luggage was delayed while travelling in Europe (I'm from US). Longest was 3 days. If you haven't packed emergency clothes, at least pack emergency underwear. Also most airlines have a "emergency lost luggage bag" to give you if you ask. Some more elaborate than others, but always ask as this is great to have.

First, very interesting video! Regarding the peanuts, I recently went to see a stage play and nothing containing peanut was allowed in the building (they would keep any snack at the door in case someone had missed the rule when they booked) because a cast member had severe peanut allergy, so I can imagine it can be an issue if you're sitting next to them on a plane. Very good point to raise, I will actually be more mindful of it, it's one of those things I know but doesn't usually come to mind when I pack.

As to peanut allergies, they can definitely be severe enough that someone eating peanuts at the other end of the plane could cause a reaction. However, flight attendants will make an announcement requesting that no one eats peanuts if someone with such a severe allergy is on board, so I wouldn’t worry about accidentally causing an allergic reaction by eating my peanut snacks. Just pack peanut free snacks as well just in case

Peanut allergies are triggered by proteins found in peanuts. The smell of peanuts can cause anxiety for people with peanut allergies, as they may fear being exposed to the allergen. However, the smell alone does not contain proteins and cannot cause an allergic reaction.
@ckdraws410
@ckdraws410 Жыл бұрын
@@TonyByteit’s not the smell itself that’s a problem, it’s the airborne molecules. People absolutely can have allergic reactions from someone eating peanuts or peanut butter from across the room. I know because in elementary school there was a girl in my class who was severely allergic to peanuts. One time someone ate a peanut butter sandwich on the opposite end of the room from her and she broke out in a huge rash on her face and neck

I love how you're so mindful about the other people you share the space with on the flight ^_^ since you like to read AND journal I want to share my finding with you. I just bought a supernote wich is just like a kindle (a pad with electronic ink and without backlight) with extra functions. you can load all kinds of black and white images on it (maps etc.), load many formats of books on it (not just kindle. I buy many books from independent writers online so I am happy that my supernote can read those as well) AND you can write and draw in it!(sidenote: you can upload your own templates so you can even have a custom template for each of your journeys) You can even make a pdf with your travel schedules and when you mark them with the pen you get an extra page where you can make notes on the words/paragraph you marked ^_^ it became the one item I could not be without any longer and it has so many functions while still being small and light - wich is amazing for your "endless" journeys.

I really enjoy your videos, watching this one as I practice pack for my long haul flight in a couple days, it's helping keep me calm and focused! Love your thoughts on journaling. I would disagree about the fanny pack though. When I've used one it ends up feeling like an extra bag that restricts my mobility and is another thing to keep an eyes on and worry about. If I've packed well enough, I prefer to keep those important items for the flight in the front pocket of my personal bag. Keep up the amazing content! Subbed! 😊

don't wear metal sequins on your butt on your jeans! You will be escorted by security for a pat-down and GSR test. Ask me how I know lmao (it was my first and only flight, I didn't know!) as for the peanut allergy, I'd probably start carrying an Epi-Pen (if the airlines allow it) just in case something happens to anyone, even if you yourself do not have any food allergies. another HUGE tip is do your research for the specific airline you'll be flying on, such as banned items on the airline's website.

Hey, thanks for the video. About to take our first flight abroad from the US and this is great tips and advise. And yes, life threatening anaphylactic reactions to peanuts can be triggered just by being in the proximity of peanut products. That’s what makes peanut allergies so deadly. You don’t have to actually ingest the peanuts to have a reaction. The dust, oil and even the aroma of peanuts can cause people to stop breathing. Scary stuff. Thanks again!!

On long flights I always pop 2 aleve when I get on the plane. Usually after about 4 hours the pressure in the plane will make a mess of my sinuses and I'll start sneezing and then get congested. I used to use allergy pills but they contain caffeine which screws up my jetlag. So I started using advil but now I prefer aleve since they last long enough for long haul flights. Tylenol pm is good too if I want help sleeping in the plane. Hand sanitizer is also good for some skin rashes. God knows what you're exposed to in hotels. I always travel with a portable pharmacy. Foreign hospitals... Kinda scary since of them.

Yes, peanut allergies are a very real, and dangerous thing. I'm glad that one of your viewers pointed this out. Even ingesting, chewing and breathing out the air with peanuts on your breath can trigger an allergic response. Our son almost died from peanut allergies. We carry around an Epipen because we know we can't stop the world from eating peanuts, but it would be nice if people were aware of eating peanuts in an ENCLOSED space like an aircraft, and far away from any hospital, as you could imagine, if the airway started closing up.

I'm glad you enjoyed them! That's a great question - and the ones I'm currently using are actually different from the ones in the video. This is the personal item in the video (black one): bit.ly/40JPYGu (Affiliate). It looks like this is a newer version than the one I have. They actually sent me that backpack for free because my previous one got a rip in it (after 5 years) and it was covered under their lifetime warranty 😎 The personal item I currently use is the Aer Go Pack 2, which is a little smaller than the one in the video. But what I like about it is it has a super slim profile, so I can empty it out and pack it inside my carry on if I want. The carry on I'm currently using is this one (except I took all the colored stuff off it so it's all black): bit.ly/3DZLySz (Affiliate link). MY wife is using this as her carry on: I believe the bigger bags you see in the video are actually checked bag size. On that trip, we were checking bags, but now we're doing carry on only. I hope that helps!

If you are eating a food that someone else is allergic to with your bare hands & then without washing your hands touch a surface that the person with the allergy then touches, that is definitely enough for many people to break out in hives; my brother has had this happen with his nut allergy & I personally have had this happen with my banana allergy (banana allergy is not as common as nut or peanut allergy but banana is the most common fruit for someone to be allergic to) Personally I’ve only ever had or witnessed a reaction bad enough not to be able to breathe after actually eating the food & not just skin contact (again skin contact will typically only cause hives or even just itching) but my understanding is that there are some people with such severe food allergies that even just skin contact could cause difficulty breathing. If you are going to eat a common food allergen on a plane, I would recommend wiping of your hands with wet wipes before touching any surfaces & being extremely careful not to get crumbs anywhere someone else may come into contact with.
