Heyo! Mitch and Day here 👋🏼
We’re just your typical American-Colombian couple determined to live every second of our precious time here on earth to the fullest. After a 10-month solo backpacking trip through South America, I (Mitch) stopped in Cali, Colombia to take salsa dancing classes 💃🏻. I only planned to stay for a couple weeks, but God had other plans for me. I met a cute Colombian girl (Day) in class, those couple weeks turned into a couple years, and before we knew it...we were married 👰🏻🤵🏼
Now we’re traveling the world full time as digital nomads, supporting ourselves by working online 👨‍💻👩‍💻
Our goal with these videos is to inspire you to step outside your comfort zone, give you an inside peek at our crazy imperfect lives, and show you that you don’t have to be rich to live an extraordinary life...all you need to do is make the choice!

Mostly just ... patience. Nobody WANTS to be on a 15 hour flight, it's like we're all in misery together. And as far as flight attendants are concerned, I know I couldn't look my best for 15 hours so remember they're operating on very little sleep, too. We're all on this plane, we're all going to get there, nobody is going to get there earlier, just be nice.

Recently, while preparing to board a flight to Rome from Newark, I struck up a conversation with a flight attendant. I felt the need to ask her how SHE was doing. She told me. And then I told her in so many words that I appreciated her. She gave me a hug and held on for an extra second or two. I think she really needed to feel appreciated.

@@ProjectUntethered Better still. A "snood" /tube scarf/ biker scarf (were you wearing one at 9:50?) Multi purpose. If for some reason you're wearing a mask ("2021"?) You can place the mask inside the scarf and pull that up over your nose, no ear loops, more comfortable. Sleeping? Fold into 3-4, great eye mask. In that configuration, it also holds your earbuds in place.

If you're using in ear headphones on a flight I would recommend not putting them in until the cab gets pressurized. The last time I used in-ear headphones on a flight it didn't wait my ears didn't pop and for 2 hours it felt like my eardrums were going to explode. No joke I was sweating and was contemplating asking the flight attendant to land the plane. I didn't fully regained my hearing for at least 3 days.

This happens to me headphones or not. I've tried all the tricks but can't get it to consistently work. I've also found descent to be the worst, but not all the time. Your advice is great though. Going up or down, take out your earphones or use over ears. You can chew gum or swallow, but the thing that works best for me is the hold my nose and gently try and push air out. This causes small pops that equalise everything. Hope everyone has a good flight!

Another tip for connecting international flights: There are many international airports that have free shower facilities. If you have the time between flights, it's totally worth using them to freshen up and even change into clean clothes too. I've done this from the YYZ-TPE-NRT flight. YYZ-TPE is a 15 hour flight. With the 3.5 hour layover, it was the perfect time to take a shower and freshen up. That way I felt awake a refreshed for the 4 hour flight to NRT. It made such a huge improvement to the journey :)

Regarding jet lag, our travel agent suggested doing whatever was needed to stay awake until 7 pm local time before going to bed. For us, it resulted in a quick body clock reset without the need to slowly adjust by an hour each day ahead of time.

Looking back, I don’t think that there has EVER been a time when I have flown somewhere that I haven’t been tired. Even in the same time zone. All I can say is that it worked for us going to Europe from the west coast and back. Twice now. We have another upcoming trip, and will try to adhere to the same strategy.

If going east, go out and walk in the sun to get as much sun exposure as possible. Walk a lot. Do NOT take a nap when you arrive. Stay up until at least 10pm local time. You will be exhausted, but should sleep through the night and wake up refreshed and ready to go in the morning. Going west? Good luck!

1- say hi to your row mates, make it easy for everyone to talk to each other if and when needed. 2- try to plan to get sleep before hand (don't drink coffee, tire yourself out before the flight) 3- Get ear plus, an eye mask and a pillow (these all will put you to sleep) 4- make sure you're covered.

Brilliant observations and suggestions. Now I realise why the queues for the bathroom /toilet /loo always seem to bunch up and how to choose my loo time more effectiently. Also your "fanny pack" suggestion is a very good idea, pulling stuff into or out off my carry on luggage /backpack repeatedly and the remote overhead storage problem as well. Really useful tips. I am in my 70s and still travelling long haul by myself so all suggestions very useful.

I once had a long “conversation” with a flight attendant who insisted my bum bag must be stowed in the overhead locker as carry on luggage while i was sitting in an exit row despite it being firmly attatched to me. He wasnt budging and the plane apparently wasnt going anywhere until i complied so i reluctantly gave in but couldnt see the logic and sat fuming for the entire journey and have never used anything detatchable like bum bags or passport holders since

Yeah that is kind of annoying. Might be a good idea to shift it over to your side and hide it with your ark if you get out in the emergency exit, just in case. I’ve only been in the emergency exit row a handful of times, but haven’t run into problems yet. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Thanks for the great tips. My lifehack is one you already mentioned, noise cancelling earbuds, the airfly pro Bluetooth transmitter, and the double mini jack adapter. It works great and allows to keep the volume low. I also tried a cheap transmitter from Amazon first, which has good reviews, but it has tons of noise when using in a plane and was impossible to use. So I recommend the airfly pro which works great for me. I tend to pick aisle seats on long flights, so I can get up and stretch whenever I want. Also go to the wc and access the luggage compartment so I can offload more things.

TRTL pillow is great! It does get some getting used to, but I do like it better than the standard travel pillow. Another use: behind the neck when you are watching the Entertainment system. Cool Video, But I have to say.... Isle for the win. Being in Australia, every flight is basically a long hall flight and having been to 32 countries, my preference is (center row) Isle seats. The main reason is that you have easy access to bags and the bathroom. If you are traveling with someone, at worst they only need to move over 1 person, not 2. Also, you get more space for your shoulders and legs, assuming you have a good travel pillow you shouldn't have much movement while sleeping.

Love the Trtl neck pillow! Easy to tuck into a carry on bag too. If you are someone who doesn't have a hard time sleeping in a sitting position, then skip a neck pillow altogether. But as someone who cannot sleep like that, the Trtl is great to have! I've been taking little travel packs of wet wipes/baby wipes with us on trips for years now and I'll never travel without them! Great for freshening up on a plane or to get the grime off your hands while you're out and about. I'll wipe down my face and arms on the plane then put on some lotion just before we land and I feel so much better. If the plane right was hot for some reason, I've been known to go into the bathroom and do a little "mini bath" in there with the wipes. Lol! Reapply lotion and deodorant, brush them teeth and you're good to go! This might just be me, but I like to bring a water bottle with me. Keep it empty until we get through security then fill it up. That or I buy an overpriced bottle of water at the airport and hold on to it to refill it. Then it doesn't matter if I get tired of carrying it, I can just toss it. Don't have to worry about it getting lost either.

For my last long-haul flight, I purchased a Twelve South AirFly Pro Bluetooth Transmitter which is compatible with my bluetooth earbuds and it worked great. It's small and doesn't take up much space, smaller than a car key fob, and it stays charged for a very long time. I have not tried it yet for its other uses, but it is also compatible in certain vehicle bluetooth systems and certain home sound system setups.

Comfortable clothes, cotton jumper etc. Scarf which I used on and off because I was cold and then hot. Eye mask , slip on shoes , compression socks. Turn TV off when eating. Sit up and enjoy your food. Alot of folk slouching watching TV whilst eating , I felt that it was rude for the air hostesses.

Fanny packs rock. (Don't say 'Fanny' if you're traveling to Ireland, though....) I love traveling in cargo pants. The pockets are empty through the airport, but filled once I get ready to board or am boarded and in my seat. Having everything I want in-flight right on my bod below the waist and arms reach works very well. Trust me...Asia, Europe, Africa, South America....has never failed me. Just make sure the pockets can be secured with a zipper, snap or velcro.

The liquid rule work around also works for things like makeup remover (I don't wear makeup, but I'm guessing at least some of the other viewers probably do) - bring pre-moistened cotton balls/makeup pads/etc. in a baggie and they won't count as liquids. Same goes for antibacterial wipes (as long as it's wipes, and not just a bottle of liquid, they don't count either, even if there's a little bit of liquid in the bottom). I'll note that those are for TSA - what other countries do is completely up to them, and never assume that the rules will be the same as in the U.S. (case and point: when flying back to the States out of FCO 7 years ago, the security officer forced me to take off my glasses because they were apparently setting off the metal detector - they were semi-rimless wire frame, and have never set off any other metal detector I've ever gone through before or since; try to pull that off in the States and the TSO would be committing a federal crime, risking jail time and worse). As a general rule, for TSA (again, don't assume other countries have the same rules), if you can spray it, pour it, or spread it, it counts as a liquid (although something super chunky, like chicken salad, doesn't count - got that straight from my best friend who's been a TSO for almost 6 years; not sure if super chunky salsa would be the same or not), so things like applesauce, hummus, cooked hot cereal, cream cheese, condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc.), guac, etc., all count as liquids unless they're on something (e.g. a sandwich). And a quick tip for flying out of Heathrow for any liquids you'll be carrying onto the plane (either in personal item or carryon) - they have a reputation for being extremely strict about the size of liquids bags, so a "TSA approved" liquids bag may or may not be allowed through - they might make you put all of your liquids into one of the 1L ziploc-type bags that they provide at the checkpoint, and if they don't all fit, you may or may not be allowed to take through the ones that don't. So whatever liquids you're taking onto the plane, if you'll be flying out of Heathrow during your trip, make sure those liquids will all fit into a 1L/1qt ziploc, otherwise there's a chance you might be forced to leave one or more of them behind at security there. Used my AirFly Duo the last 4 times I flew (got it in August, and flew in September and February) - so handy, because I don't use corded earbuds or headphones anymore (it's a giant pain in the butt to keep corded earbuds from falling out of my ears when I put on my noise-cancelling headphones because 1) my ears are so tiny that it only takes the tiniest knock to the wires and they fall out, 2) my kindle's volume only goes so high, and 3) my noise-cancelling headphones are such that when the volume is all the way up, the ambient noise is also jacked up actually louder than it is in real life (super helpful in some instances, like working backstage in a theatre production without mics in a role that involves having to time things to the dialog being spoken on stage, but not so much for listening to audiobooks on the plane)). I can watch movies on my mp3 player (technically my mom's old phone but it hasn't had any service for 3 1/2 years), and even though I can easily connect my earbuds to it, I use my AirFly to save the player's battery, since having both bluetooth on and playing video drains it pretty quickly, so using the AirFly lets me keep bluetooth turned off, saving the player battery big time, which is good because even though I normally only fly domestic (I've done 2 transatlantic trips, but that's it for flying internationally and both were years ago), my travel days are usually 7+ hrs long, which is more than long enough to drain the player's battery all the way if using bluetooth. (I'd consider getting the Pro, but it being only able to be used in one mode at a time, instead of both at the same time, was the deal breaker for me, because I do most of my phone calls using Google Voice because it's free and calling with my phone isn't, and my one computer doesn't have bluetooth capabilities, so I would need something that would go both directions at the same time I'll massively second someone else's suggestion - powerbank. I won't travel without my Anker PowerCore 10000, because I've had to use it on flights more than once. I never use the USB ports in the seats because 1) it tethers my device, and 2) I always end up accidentally kicking it, knocking it out and potentially even damaging the cord, which is why I hate when planes have the underseat (as in facing forward) power ports under the seat next to the seat it's for - ran into that in September, and it was frickin' annoying because I couldn't have both legs out straight in front of me without kicking the cord of the person next to me, which killed my hips and back. I always go for the window seat 1) because it tends to be the widest (fun fact, the window seats on little CRJ200s are actually wider than the window seats on 737-800s and 737-900s), 2) because I can pull out my sausage pillow and use it to lean against the wall and help me sleep, and 3) I'm always guaranteed to have at least one armrest - I've been stuck in the middle seat and both people next to me were hogging the armrests - I have to be able to have my elbows sit comfortably next to me because otherwise my shoulders and neck cramp up to no end, which usually triggers a migraine. I always go for a window seat (if they're available - the only times they weren't were on my last transatlantic flight, and the time when I booked about 3 days before the trip (I always aim to book a minimum of 2 weeks before, but that time I couldn't)), and I usually go for the second to back row, because it's close to the bathroom but still reclines. Gate agents have a habit of offering to move me up (if there are any empty seats on the flight - sometimes there are, sometimes there aren't) because I use a wheelchair, and as long as the seat they're offering to move me to is still a window seat, reclines, and isn't directly over the wing (which blocks the view), I usually (there have been a couple times where I declined because there was a different reason other than being close to the restrooms that I picked the row I did) accept, and that means that even though I always book an economy seat, I sometimes end up sitting in economy plus. There have been times where they've offered to move me further forward to a middle or aisle seat, but I always turn them down in those instances because I will always take a window seat over a non-window further-forward seat, since I can still walk some and middle and aisle seats wreak havoc on my joints because they're so narrow (and I'm not big by any means), at least on the planes I usually fly on.

Yeah I've seen that - I have one that can kinda function as both. But I prefer the fanny pack around the waist because I often wear my carry on backpack on my back and my personal item backpack on my front, so a sling doesn't fit very well if it's around my chest area. If anyone with AirPods is worried about losing one, they make silicone pieces that the stem of the AirPod slips into and a piece hooks over the ear. Another option is a silicone strap that has a channel for an AirPod stem on each end. Then near each end is a magnet, so the loop stays closed around the neck when not in use.
