very good video. as a ghanain i watch alot of diaspora who move to ghana and they make alot of mistakes , too zealous etc, and i try to warn the m but they think im a hater who doesnt want them to connect to africa and their roots etc, but sometiems they too gullible, so i like you channel because they will listen to someone who is a black american. i think you should even do a video on red flags off dating african man online . many black american women dating someoen they think they love online and dont know they just being used for money.

it really depends. Some families are more conservative than others. All my brothers never introduced their now wives to my parents until few months to their engagement(2 dated for 7 yrs since it was from college, and 1 married his wife within 7 months of dating) Many African parents especially the wealthy class find it insulting if you keep bring different boyfriends and girlfriends to introduce to the family. You only bring a person to them when u are absolutely sure you will be marrying them. What serious men to show seriousness is they invite you to family events and parties so ppl get to see you and assess you indirectly and then as time goes on, research is done on your background and family (We yorubas have a name for this background search). By the time you bring the girl to the family formally, bakground search is already well done and approved silently.

When it comes to marriage laws... when the man dies and the couple did sign courts papers around their properties, these days the court definitely hands every wealth or properties singed in the wife's & children's name... Alway let the family know, not only the parent but also the HEAD of the family of the person you are dating in Ghana and your child will have everything he/she is entitled to in Ghana never leave the head of the family out. The Akans call him Abusua payin. Other tribes have their own name for this guy. He is normally the oldest male member of the family, he takes care of the family properties including lands. Families can number from thousands and more, some less.

Marriages in Ghana is a family thing because none of the couples can decide on divorce without the families consent. The families always step in to solve any problem that arises in the marriage but if you marry on the street then you lose all the intervention rights.

And sometimes too, the woman (if from the Diaspora) must stand strong and fight for what she deserves or has earned with their deceased husband.... And this law or rules apply across all the Ghanaian cultures....If the deceased husband did put his mediate wife & children's name on his properties, his extended family may try n fight it, but the wife fight can earned her n her children those inheritances...and this rule works for both a Diasporan wife or Ghanaian wofe... they go through same issues as well - not only the woman from America or from outside....👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿✌🏿👌🏿

BANNER OF THE DAY!!! You are responsible for your decisions. Check your hormones, take a deep breath and allow a good amount of oxygen to flow through your brains. That romantic feeling you develop when you haven't met someone in person is not serendipidity, it is marginal stupidity. In Ghana, tradition is "THICK" in the villages and gets "DILUTED" as you get into the big cities. However, the influence of family tradition is everywhere. So YES, meeting the family (or a family member) is a good indication of where you stand. With the language barrier, how about an agreement that english is spoken when around the Ghanaian family? Family calls are very common with Ghanaians. It's ok to put general conversations on speaker so that everyone feels a part of it. It removes the suspicion when you have to excuse yourself and take the call in private. #bridgethegap #Pollinate

Good interview. With the cold hard facts. I was born to Ghanaian parents and grew up in the UK. I did a couple years of high school and some college in Ghana and then moved to the US. My advise to Diasporeans on this Ghana marriage issue is to stay away from it. You have no clue of the culture and mentality that govern over there. The Ghana women think they have no options that is why they put up with it. Finding a happily married Ghana woman is actually rare. For them its not the happiness, it is the status of being married and having children that they care about. What bothers me is that all the assetts and work you put in the marriage etc is for somebody else to assess and even benefit from. Even with the recent legal changes women and children are routinely evicted and dispossessed upon divorce or death of a spouse. Inability to have kids is an automatic Polygamy situation or divorce. Even without that Polygamy or extra marital children is normal with zero consequences. There is no such thing as ME over there. Everybody belongs to an extended family whether you want to or not and you comply with the collective rules. That's it there is nothing else to consider. Period.

Ny, thanks for all your efforts. Your guest did her best to speak about Ghanaian marital customs, traditions, and laws and I'm sure she means well. But I'm afraid some of the things she said aren't accurate, and I think it's simply because she doesn't know or understand the norms in question. Given the importance of the subject, I suggest you find others, preferably a Ghanaian family attorney, or an educated Ghanaian elder to also address the topic. But the warning she gave to "sisters" flying to Ghana and rushing into marriage is on point! DO NOT DO IT! Why would anyone make such a life-changing commitment to a total stranger you don't know? That's too risky and foolish! Wherever anyone lives, Ghana or America, you should not marry someone you have only known online. At the very least, give yourself time to know this person - his or her values, outlook on life, character etc. It's always wise to look before you leap! Again, thanks for your enlightening videos, and I hope you take my suggestion into account. Blessings to you.

Really, I just cannot fathom why our African American sisters especially, come over to Ghana and suddenly become 'experts' at Ghanaian culture and tradition. This woman is clearly recounting her own version of stuff she has heard about Ghanaian customs, some of which is sadly, pure misinformation. But the penchant of the African-American KZfaqrs to seek information from these partly-informed Americans is the REAL problem here. As a result, there is SO MUCH MISINFORMATION BEING SPREAD BY ZEALOUS BUT IGNORANT AFRICAN AMERICANS ABOUT AFRICAN CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS. Very disturbing indeed.

@@positivevibes2406 What do you mean by this comment is uncalled for? Every Ghanaian knows that some of what the older lady said was way off the truth. For example, her claim that tribes do not inter-marry, or that the Akans will never allow one of their own to marry an Eweh, is palpably false, and potentially inflammatory to Ghanaian society. The poster, Paa Ben, was right in pointing out the errors, and suggesting that an elderly Ghanaian with proper knowledge of the culture be asked to elaborate on it. You clearly have self-esteem issues, to feel you have to jump to the defence of the American lady, though the Ghanaian Paa Ben is clearly right, and made his point courteously. Poor you.

I came to this video just to learn what my 2 children (4 yr olds) are going to experience in the future. My ex, a mother of 4 is flying in to marry a Man from Ghana this November. I was shocked to find out after she kept it a secret from me. As far as I know, they met on the Internet, she bought her own plane ticket & wedding dress so says her friends to go do that. I assume this man will need a green card application started to eventually come to the US. Red flags as this video has pointed out. I just wanted to know what kind of life my twin sons are headed for.

By who? Intermarriage exists for the longest unless some families have strong beliefs against it.

Also, Muslim men don't automatically have the right to have four wives. You can also pledge that you don't want it. It's not all Muslim men that want to four wives. There also has to be a reason why they pick another wife. It can't just be for no reason. He has to have enough money to keep those wives. Mostly men pick four wives because they feel like doing it but they don't have to do it and it's not their right to have four wives just for the sake of it.

The money, schnapps and gifts etc...it is called dowry...this is what the husband give to the wife’s family. The wife’s family can demand the amount of the dowry...

I know were mainly speaking to WOMEN, but I wish you would have spoken more to the MEN on the same subject. I am currently talking to a woman from Ghana, I'm moving there regardless, but would like to know if that same ordeal applies to men dating a Ghanaian woman. At least I know she should introduce me to her family, mainly the heads of her family. Thanks for sharing.

Im currently date a Ghanian women long distance I already done the knock I already spoke to her family and was given a list of items such as Schnapps, Kente cloth, cow, soft drinks, cola nut, etc she helped me with getting the things needed her family has already accepted me I'm good faith and she is 29 years old but I do know if you haven't spoke to the family or if they haven't accepted you or gotten in contact/communication with the family then your probably getting scammed if anyone says they want you to give them $30,000 or something outrageous red flag run

Aww sis, definitely continue to have a positive outlook, not all Ghanaian men feel that way, I would say a nice percentage but not all. If a guy really loves you, he will be down for you no matter what no matter where he is from and that's the one who is worth while. Stay encouraged!!! ❤
