You will love your Gear Upshifts on a motorcycle if you learn this technique. You can use this technique on any of the motorcycles like the KTM Duke 390, Bajaj Dominar 400, KTM RC 390 etc... You can do this on a 100cc to even a 1000cc motorcycle, also, some cruiser motorcycle which do not have long travel gear levers.

Great video mate! However you mention that you need to blip your throttle while upshifting. As far as my understanding goes, blipping your throttle would increase the RPMs of the bike and since we're upshifting, we are looking to reduce the RPMs. In order to do this, I recommend letting go off the throttle for a second and shifting simultaneously and then starting to accelerate again. I understand that this is what you meant but I just thought I'd point out to you the difference in the terminology. Blipping the throttle is what one should do while downshifting in order to rev match. Apart from that small terminology mistake? (not quite sure I'd call it a mistake, but i hope you get what i mean to say) , great video. I believe this will really help increase the knowledge of fellow bikers in India in order to ride better. I recommend making a video on Rev Matching as well if you haven't already. That's a great way of maintaining your clutch's life. I've been doing it for a while now and I've noticed that your riding is a lot smoother when you rev match. It also gives you the feeling that you're riding a superbike!

raj chaudhari I disagree with you. What Vikas Sir has mentioned is correct. Infact clutchless upshifting will help so many riders increase their speed. He only made a small mistake with the terminology and being a human, that's completely acceptable. Nobody is perfect and just because you can't appreciate the efforts someone puts in, doesn't give you the right to say that their videos are useless. Every video on youtube is for a particular use to someone or the other. Even the Nyan cat videos have a purpose - to entertain! So I'm sorry but I'm going to have to disagree with your comment.

Killer technique boss. For those saying this will ruin the bike, it will only do so if you don't time your wrist action properly. You will cause a jerk to the drivetrain that is in fact harmful. Trying to shift before blipping the throttle is nearly always futile, as the engaged gear still has power going through it and therefore will not disengage (the force from your foot is not enough to overcome the friction between the engaged dogs). If you do manage to shift it, you will feel a forward jerk. Not getting back on the throttle immediately after the shift (Especially on bigger engines) will jerk you back as the engine has already started decelerating. These are probably some things which may give one the feeling that their bike is chewing itself up from the inside. While preloading the gear lever is not entirely necessary(I seldom do it on my Dominar, shifts amazing anyway), it is a great way to ensure a positive, immediate shift as soon as you blip. However, I do have some doubts as to what happens to the gear selector forks(in short, making one part rub against another at high revs). It would be great if someone could shed some light on this. This works BETTER at high revs as there is a high possibility of the dogs on the next gear having a synchronized position with the input, therefore, it always works, as the dogs are flying past each other so fast. The reason this is smooth as hell is because your engine can easily transfer its momentum to the bike(in the next upper gear) instantaneously. It doesn't have to rev match, burn clutch and lurch to the right RPM. Now that IS BAD for the clutch. The mistake that could be made here is a weak force on the lever. Or shifting at loo low an RPM. When trying this out the first time I once had it pop out of gear in second and go into neutral(like Vikas said, don't use it first to second to begin with :P) Just to reiterate what's in the video, Sequence: Accelerate Preload Shifter *Very quickly(less than a quarter of a second) Off the throttle Shift for real(quick and surely, it WILL shift) On the throttle Smile and ride away like a boss Happy riding folks and thanks Vikas for the great video!

So while doing clutchless upshifting, we don't have to completely let go of the throttle; just the blip will be enuf, right? (can anyone clarify this) TIA

Thanks Vikas for one most Important point that i was missing for a good clutch less shift that is to eliminate the play area of the shifter pedal. I saw and learnt it the 1st moment when i saw you doing it on dominar review. I also would like to share one observation that i picked up while practicing Clutch less. when previous gear is done clutch less on higher rev the next does not need to be at high even at low rev means between 4 - 5K RPM its shifts smoothly Thanks Sir Please do share more techniques and skill, waiting for it

hahahahaha wow just go by feeling man, above parking lot speeds countersteering works. Perhaps if you understand why it works, you won't have such a confusion. It is simple centrifugal force at play. You would notice even in a car, that when you steer right into a hard right hander, your body would be pushed in the opposite direction. In a car however, there are two wheels on the outside to maintain stability and course of direction. In a bike, you use this physics, to tip the bike over into a lean in the direction you want to go, faster. Does not mean that if you continue to countersteer through the entire corner, it is good. You just countersteer to get the bike to tip over faster after that you very much need to steer into the corner.
@BigStrath
@BigStrath 7 жыл бұрын
It is something that most people will do naturally. If you have ever ridden a bike then you have counter steered without even realizing it. At slow speeds you turn your wheel in the direction that you want to turn, but once you go over a certain speed (lets say 15 mph) then you will naturally begin to counter steer. When i counter steer I push the handle bar in the direction i want to go instead of pulling it. It is a very slight movement that helps the bike tip into the turn. I would say that you should transition from normal steering to counter steering once you have momentum going in a specific direction. Hope this helps.
@Dhananjay_Bhardwaj
@Dhananjay_Bhardwaj 7 жыл бұрын
If you want to learn countersteering watch Twist of the wrist from Keith code . In simple terms , if there is a left hand curve , push the left handle bar in opposite direction of the turn , like you are moving in right side . When you do this you will see that your bike is immediately leaned over to the left . Vice versa for right hand turn .

many of my friends also told me that rev matching on downshifts puts strain on the engine. I tried explaining to them that as long as the gear i shift down to stays under the red-line, that is not possible, but some folks are just stubborn in this country no point trying to explain yourself to them. Life works in a very binary way for them and most just do as they are told.

Some people think that they are teaching some heroic deeds and are self experts. Guys please remember that these techniques are for race tracks where you are trying to save fraction of seconds . It is not suppose to be done under any circumstances on public roads and most importantly not on your daily commuting and personal super bikes. Please emphasize on good and safe riding habits.We Indians are idiots who think that since the guys on the race track are doing it then we can also do it anytime. Think for a while they do on machines which are just used for a single race track and then they are never used. They just dump it after a single race. They are all assembled for the particular race. Please do not make a habit of doing this on your personal bikes. As I said always emphasize on good riding habits. You are not going to own anything by saving fraction of seconds on public roads. However I have seen people losing life in fraction of seconds.You may accidentally make it worse while concentrating on this technique on the roads. Its a universal thing where proper clutch engagement should be done for better engine life and its a text book theory. Also always remember race track machines are specifically build for race and not for other purpose. Rest is all upto you. Your money , your machine.

i think you ride an activa and you are'nt capable of anything more and your brain capacity is sow low that you actually need to take your concentration off the road just for a gear shift which is easier than the normal shifting and is better for your clutch than normal engage and disengage of the clutch if its done right and you are probably watching poonam pandeys cleveage on youtube more often and stumbled across this video by mistake and have never seen the rest of his videos which are more focused towards safety and precautions, better savings per kilometer and better maintenance of motorcycles and as your misinformed and knowledge lacking brain mentioned above, no motorcycle is trashed after a race. That pactice is not done in race cars too except for dragsters because those engines are running on pure methanol with dangerously high compression ratios and hardly any engine oil and yet the engines are reused for a minimum of 2 races. And wherever you are from, KTMs or any Indian market race machines are probably a rare sight and as i mentioned your activa above you haven't taken one for a ride. For your information they are made for clutch-less shifting so do not degrade a persons effort to educate people and think 10 times before typing nonsense just because you got access to the internet. Mr. Vikas is a well respected biker in the biker community. I have won in 2 KTM orange day circuits and 1 trophy in chennai annual guild race days with the knowledge shared in his channel. Hats off to him and balls to you.

Thanks Vikas. Same thing occurs. When the throttle is released, then clutch has lesser forward force to engage, this seems some sort of backward force (which partially disengages) is applied to the clutch, which is enough for gearshifts. Now I am able to do clutchless upshifts and even downshifts on my commuter bike.

Wow, I said that before when you talked about the gear sprokets, excuse my incorrectness, at CBT it was so very bad 1st time on a yamaha in 1990, terrible I was not at all understanding so many things about even stalling due to grabbing the gear lever, thinking it was a bicycle back break! Aggh. So you described exactly when I could not shift into first gear instead of remaining sllowing neutral gear and oh well. I am very glad. However, when I did get to the feel of what as a total novice, of the pull of the bike using clutchless revolutions at top of 2nd gear then third, I locked back wheel at end of the runway, due to grabbing agsin, the clutch, eithout using my left foot change and had to put my left foot down to spin at that point to turn on a sixpence, used accelerator to control spin then back wheel put me right on the ball snd I accelerated suddenly got that old engine happy and got a round of applause! Cannot explain but feel less silly now. Many thanks x

Great video Vikas. I tried it on my Pulsar 200ns and it worked. It shifted very smoothly, felt much better than using the clutch. Waiting for your next video on clutchless downshifting. Sidhant Kacker great obersevation, even I had a confusion with the bliping part However carefully observing vikas's hand I realised he is cutting off the throttle.

you should also do one on proper rev matched downshifts. I see most people in india, dont rev match when shifting down. they just let the clutch out slowly to get the RPMs right.

I ride an NS200. Once in motion, using the clutch to get going, clutchless shifting thereafter, up or down, is safe and easy so long as the motor is decelerating at the time of the shift. In other words, once you are in motion you can shift high or low so long as the RPM's are in decline. When shifting down without a clutch, brake and shift in a 1-2 manner, first apply your brakes to slow the bike and engine down; then immediately make your down shift. Otherwise (unless you have a slipper clutch) your back tire will stop spinning for a second putting tremendous torque on the drive chain and clutch, causing them to wear prematurely. Beware: clutch-less shifting is bad while the RPM's are steady and even worse when they are on the rise; it's just asking for trouble. Don't do it!

Technique like you should learn on smaller bikes where mistake won't be as big a deal.... Once you master upshifts you can also do down shifts like while slowing down raise the rpm for a second and downshift because when you down shift the rpm of the lower gear is always more. It helped me a lot when my bikes clutch cable broke and had to bring my bike home in Mumbai ka traffic.. Stopping without clutch is scary.. Because when you stop you have to put the bike in neutral and without clutch bike doesn't go in neutral and again going from stopped position you have to push the bike and then put it in first gear or the bike will jerk and stop

It was fantastic knowing this piece of information. What I want to know is how does it affect the chain of the moterbike, does it have an adverse effect? I am a rookie and would like to know.
