@@Rotebuehl1it's just that the avation regulations back then stated that an aircraft must have 4 engines so that if two fail, two would still be active therefor the avro, a340, b747, etc also have four engines

PSA airlines in the American southwest had many of these in their fleet.[1980's+] It is, and was a fine aircraft. I loved this plane- quiet smooth and confident. Smoothest landings EVER! I was sorry to see it go. In 2017, I would fly on this plane in a heat beat! A GREAT AIRPLANE.

You got that right. Idk why they were so smooth maybe bc of their landing gear geometry and how comparatively wide the gear is for such a small plane. Very little side to side and tilt. I also loved the fact it was a small plane but had 4 engines and as a kid I always thought that was so cool. Same with the a340 even tho that’s a much bigger jet. These were also feather quiet, I lived right next to the airport and you could see them but never hear them unlike every other turbo fan plane. My most favorite plane that would come to our airport was a Learjet 28 with their turbojet engine that were incredibly loud easily on par with a MiG 21 and would climb a few thousand feet in what seemed like 15-20 seconds. I sall that pilot do many loops, barrel rolls, and aileron rolls in that very plane as well as wing over wing turns and many other maneuvers and always buzzed the 6 story warehouse and paintbooth my father owned which he used it to paint a lot of things for NASA, the military base close by, Disney, Epcot, universal studios, island of adventure and a lot of other very big sectioned structures like roller coasters and what not. That pilot must have owned the plane either that or the owner was super cool. The Learjet 28 still holds every single private jet performance record to this very day 45 years later.

Flew the Avro out of DTW for Northwest for 7 years. One of my favorites. DC 3, King Air 200, and the Avro. The speed brakes on the tail is opened at 50 feet prior to landing. The aircraft does not have reversers. Awesome brakes. 100 passengers. 9000 lbs thrust per engine.

My buddy Keith flew the BAe 146 as a co-pilot for City Jet out of London City airport for many yrs and he absolutley loved to fly this plane. The wings incorparate technology that was way ahead of its time and even today the wing is still regarded as one of the efficent of its size. Its designed for high lift because the plane itself is designed for short, hot and high runways, hence the choice of four smaller engines rather than two heavier bulkier engines that in wind tunnel testing resulted in too much drag and too much of an adverse impact on the high lift principle of the wing.

StellarBlue1, I always used to see these at O'Hare in Chicago, driving past on the interstate highway past the east end of the runway, and it seemed there was always one starting it's takeoff roll as I went by. I liked them because they looked like all the military cargo planes (C-141, C-5, etc) that I used to see at military airfields when I was growing up. But then I actually got to fly on one from Milwaukee to Denver, and it felt very claustrophobic to me..... It is true that the view down is better than the overwing windows on most other passenger jets, but the engines block all other views and that has all the charm of an apartment window that looks out to the side of another building. I don't know who still flies these.....I never see them on my travels anymore. I always thought it strange that they were being operated between normal commercial airports in the US....I have a book about the 146 that says the plane was designed to serve third world airports, with short dirt runways, and are kind of wasted in normal airport service....

This aircraft was part of the Royal Flight, chosen for its short field operational capability which was needed in and out of London City Airport, there were two of these as part of that flight, Prince Charles once landed one of them which ended in a runway overshoot causing nose and nose wheel damage, in the mid 90s, later these were replaced with two Falcon 900 lx models chosen for the 3 engines and extra power plant redundancy .

Great video, excellent close-ups of this nice airplane. I flew in a BAe 146 in the 90s from Munich to Brussels - can't recall what airline it was. This is most likely the smallest 4-engined jet airliner ever produced. Everything about it is odd: small size, very quiet for a jet, high wing jet, no thrust reversers. I love this airplane! Its actually proven to be thee quietest jet of its time, so quiet infact that a lot of airports, particularly in Austria and Switzerland where the night flight curfew was very strict, allowed this jet to land and takeoff almost 24 hrs...its why even today when commercial owners retire them Cargo operators snap them up! The vast majority of all that were ever made are still in use today, a lot used for frieght...BAe says that the 4 engine choice was favourable to every other 2 engine option at the time? I have a whole book of this plane, its fasinating to say the least...like you say, its seems to be a strange configuration of a plane in a lot of ways but in actual fact it was and still is an excellent performer in almost every way...

Yes 'Whisper jet' it was indeed..even w the four Honeywell engines it was amazingly quiet. TNT and Swiss are big operators. It holds the title of being the LAST commercial jetliner to be made wholly in the UK too, many say it could easily have been developed further especially when you look at the size of the market today for planes seating 100-120 passengers? Personally i think British Aerospace wanted to depart from commercial and concentrate on its military side of its business...it can be regarded as a good move i suppose when u think that BAe is one of the top 3 military/arms contravting companies in the world?

I trained in them at Hatfield. We were supposed to get most of our training in the simulator, but the Chinese were buying a bunch of 146s and were going to fly them with a flight engineer. So they were modifying the simulator to add an engineer's position. Did all my training in the airplane. Probably better training, but there are some problems you can simulate in a simulator (Guess that's why the call it a simulator, huh?) that you can't do in the airplane. Plus airplane training is a lot more expensive.

Almost all commercial jets have speed brakes. If you need to slow down/go down in a prop plane just pulling the power back lets the props provide enough drag to do the job. But jets don't have that ability. Most commercial jets (At least Boeings which I'm familiar) have speed brakes on top of the wings. It's pretty amazing to watch a 727 wing almost disassemble itself when double slotted fowler flaps, kreuger flaps, slats and speed brakes all deploy for landing.

I watched this again and damn he took a lot of runway up before touch down. I did notice that the speed brake came out before touch down also. This thing stops fast. Love the design of this plane.

Always deployed the speed brake just before touch down when throttles went to idle. Could use speed brake for fast descent from altitude if necessary.

Yes, I remember that sound when PSA flew these in USA, when the air brakes deployed on approach. The A320 makes a similar sound too.

In case you were still wondering, the pods you see are security for the aircraft. They are electronic equipment which form part of the aircraft's defensive suite......a bit secret! All very clever and obviously important given the role these aircraft have.

DogisRain Co. I was wondering about that too. Maybe they are chaff and/or flares dispensers?

ECM pods. When I was in the RAF only the tactical C130 aircraft were fitted with these. As has already been mentioned, due to its VIP role it wouldn't be unusual for 32 Squadron to have ECM fitted some of their aircraft.
