A lot of built in amps from manu's have flush mount amps with an enclosure (good ones) and either extra care/glue/bracing, or a separate chamber on the box. I find if you DO have to mount, use rubber spacers, along with using the port side near an edge and the bracing and things in the video.

My 2¢: (I have 2 degrees in the sciences) 1) if your sub is vibrating the entire car, your gonads and the cake shop across the street then it is also vibrating the amps wherever they are. 2) try rubber stand-offs on the amp mount tabs. It will reduce some vibration and helps you sleep better. 3) 130 - 150 hz is best for your gonads.
@commonsenseisdeadin2024

130-150Hz, not sure where this frequency comes from but you're doing subwoofers wrong. He clearly states to reduce vibration, which vibration isn't exactly the same as "flex". I wonder why your car is shaking much more than the cake shop across the street...... It has nothing to do with your box sitting on the structure of your car and car has tires and not mounted on the pavement would it? Try mounting your sub box to your car on rubber stand offs and get back to us. Should see if you can get some of the money spent on your "2 degrees" back, maybe they can give you 2 cents cause yours aren't worth it here. 2 things you can't buy; Expierence and common sense.

Simple mass is another way to allow for mounting the amp onto the box. Something as simple as another piece of MDF that is glued and/or screwed to the outside of the box, effectively doubling the thickness of the enclosure's wall. By doing this, you have dramatically reduced the flex and vibration that the specific wall will have. Allows for a very easy solution, whether it be on a pre-made box or one you are design/building.

Same with my 2007 Trailblazer, wanted a single 12" unit solution so that if I need storage, I can just move it to the side if need be. Used to have dual 10" subs in my previous truck, and it had a fire extinguisher mounted on the side with no issue, so why couldn't an an amp work the same way.

In a car there are a lot of weak thin metal. This metal is not close to as rigged as a good built sub box. In fact, i think the sub box is the thing in the car that vibrates less than anything else, but only if it is correctly built ofc with bracings on large flat areas. I have mounted my amps on the sides of sub boxes many times and yet had no problem with it. The worst problem is that if you want to take the sub out you have to disconnect all wiers from the amp. I think you forgot to say that increaseing the thickness of the wood helps killing the vibrations as well. Good vid mark!

@pballer2005 6 жыл бұрын
i was thinking about this too, i mean you can SEE the vibration on most car panels, i have yet to be able to see vibrations on a well built box. the weight of the box and the fact that it, hopefully, is bolted or at least well secured to the chassis should minimize vibrations on the box itself. im more worried about heavier hits from rough roads and stiff suspension...

By mounting the amp to the enclosure, you also made a convenient “easy” to remove all in one package for any would be thieves. Snip. Grab. Go. Aside from all of the reasons mentioned in the video. When installing for my customers, I always suggest alternate locations.
@craigshea2930
@craigshea2930 14 күн бұрын
So, where do you suggest? Especially in a smaller daily driver sedan? I was trying to think of alternate locations that don't take up a lot of trunk space. There's no under front-seat space to mount the amps/dsp, so I think it's gotta go somewhere in the trunk. I see the point about the "grab and go" of mounting to the sub box. And, if you want to remove only the sub--well, when ALL the amps and DSP are mounted to the sub, then you're left without an amp, so that's unattracitve as well. But for the life of me, mounting to the sub box is the easiest approach, to be sure. BTW, I'm working on my first serious car audio build ever, so I'm genuinely looking for advice. Thank you!
@craigshea2930
@craigshea2930 14 күн бұрын
So, my initial thoughts, actually, were not DIRECTLY mounting to the sub box, but creating a sub rack like Mark did for his brother-in-law's Hyundai. I was thinking of using a piece of .25" thick clear polycarbonate. Then I would mount the amps/dsp to that, and mount that plate to the box--probably using dampeners of some sort as Mark showed in this video. But thinking of the disadvantages: "grab and go" thieves, and if you just want to remove the sub but keep your door speaker amp and dsp, maybe instead I could create a "shelf" underneath the sub box? So, A small shelf that sits on the trunk floor and attach the amps/dsp to the underside of the top. Then, provide rubber feet on the top of the shelf (or attach them to the bottom of the sub box) and put the sub box on top of the "shelf". It doesn't help too much with the "grab and go" problem--now you have 2 items to grab instead of 1, but still perfectly doable "under 30 seconds" 😆, but you solve the problem of being able to easily remove the sub. The biggest drawback with the shelf is the potential to trap heat, and maybe needing to add fans. And, if you're not careful and are transporting things in your trunk, you risk blocking off ventilation, even despite having fans. I'll continue to think about this a bit more.

I cut plywood slightly smaller than the back of my box. Wrapped it in matching carpet and then mounted my amps to it. I then used French cleats to “hang” it on the back of the box. I used the cleats on the top and bottom of my amp board, so it kinda locks into place.

I'm in the middle of my build at the moment. I have two separate sealed enclosures with the amp rack hung between them using L shape brackets and rubber spacers, a bit like engine mounting brackets. This should help eliminate direct transfer of vibration from the sealed enclosures to the amp rack.
@Bee_Rhye
@Bee_Rhye 6 жыл бұрын
My biggest issue with mounting amplifiers on the sub enclosure is that it makes an easy, and attractive, package to steal. I also think mounting amplifiers this way makes the wiring messier and harder to deal with. I think most of the “vibration” concern should really be placed on in removable installs; a good number of these are not securely fastened to the vehicle (for ease of removal), and proper wire length isn’t always accounted for. These situations make it so the box can slide, pull, and jump with the suspension travel of the vehicle-effectively “dropping” the amplifier several times a week or more. And, one small drop does way more damage to an amplifier than the minimal vibration emitted from a properly designed, and secured, subwoofer enclosure would do. This is just my opinion though...

The way I do it is add another wall of 1 inch of ply wood to the side you mount your amp paint it similar to the box and fasten thourghly, then and groumets,spacers and double up and fasten amplifier, that means your amp is not directly connected to the outside wall of the original box, and the groumets and spacers keep off the second wall , which might be vibrating but definitely not flexing... also depends how much power your running.. smaller systems are A LOT more safer doing this... and definitely helps MASSIVELY!!!! 💯👍

You can have huge flex even with 130+dB, if amp doesn't have bad soldering spot it may last few years before something happens. Not a good idea to mount the amp to the box. Aside from the possible vibration damage, there is also the possibility of theft. As a professional installer, we do come across some clients that unfortunately have had their system stolen. If the amp is on the box, the thief gets it all. We usually try to hide the amps under seats if possible or behind panels where the would be thief can get to them. We also try to mount enclosures the best we can, but at least the customer still has his amp if a theft occurs.

This is a topic I'm currently struggling with, as I'm designing the system for my 2013 f150 stx quad cab. I bought a used JL 13w7 about a year ago. The box for the sub is well built, but poorly designed. To make matters worse, I'm a huge fan of quarter wave t line enclosures, and that's what I'm looking into designing. The biggest issue is the size. I don't want to build a blow through with the box in the bed, as I use my truck too much. I'm almost satisfied with the design, which basically makes the box itself the rear seat. How to go about mounting both my mono, and 4 channel amps is the last piece of the puzzle before I can complete the design, and draw out a final sketch. Under the front seats was my first thought, but I don't believe I have the room. Currently I'm considering building an amp rack to mount directly to the box, or to the rear wall of the truck like I had done in my last truck. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

How about one side in the rear (drivers side) the mono amp and the passenger side rear the other amp. Both hidden in the walls. I know f150’s somewhat, living in Maine. But I don’t know your exact truck or the quarter wave t line enclosure. I’m going to look both of them up. Thanks for the new knowledge. I agree the right thing to do is to amount the amp separate under the seat or to the body somewhere, but some people just was thump in the trunk,and if you mount everything correctly to the box or to the body I think the amplifiers safety is more determined by the power of your build. 500 watts in a decently built box one shouldn't have issues?

A good amp will have good solid state components and would be pretty vibration resistant. Practice doing right no matter what if you can but in a pinch, it will more than likely be fine. just make sure the wires are secured as those would be the first things to rattle loose if anything.

I'm only running under 550W RMS and 160w RMS on my boxes, so it's not that bad. My 550w is in a center console french in, and the actual box is on one end and the frenched amp on the far other end of e console, so it doesn't get nearly as much, and the 160rms box is semi-frenched and again on the far end and not attached to a panel that creates the box airspace. Also I mount the amps OVER carpeting, so that does some vibration dampening on it's own.

In a typical install (not extreme SPL builds), mounting to the box is irrelevant. The system itself vibrates the car, the road vibrates the car. Vibration and flex are part of everyday driving. We need to get out of this mentality we have.

Can you please do an episode on the proper and safe way to mount a typical single 10" ported sub box in the back of a SUV. I'm concerned with it coming loose in an accident or emergency maneuver and hurting someone. Ive been thinking of securing it to the floor with Jeep Wrangler hood latches because it still needs to be removable so me and possibly my wife can access the spare tire are under the cargo area in our Murano should we get a flat tire. Ive searched and there is very little info on this subject. Sincerely - A bass head who's now got a kid.

Add a floor board with hinges. Secure sub to floor board. I’ve found metal straps on both sides of the sub attached securely to the metal backing of the seats helps out a lot as well. Or you can have straps welded on the box as well. But you will have to either cut those welds( don’t recommend, gas tank near by) or have a mechanic who knows welding take them off. Physics is awesome to learn about. Plenty of ways out there to learn about force times weight vs trajectory and velocity. I’m not an engineer, just saying look it up. And what kinda straps or whatever will hold down your sub. I don’t know the combined weight or size of the sub. Each one is different. Same as each vehicle is different. Why all speakers and subs aren’t a one fit all kinda thing. And I maybe wrong! Sorry if I am, but learning about new stuff for us bass heads is fun. Even with kids! My lil girl is 14! Hopefully this helped out.

Two for the speakers and one for the subs. It’s a 2-12’s skar 1250 rms each subs. I never had a problem other than dust getting in my amps and messing one up. Over YEARS OF blasting my music. BUilt plenty of boxes before like with the amp screwed to the box and had never had a problem with the life span of the amplifier. The only thing I might think of getting concerned about might be physical vibration of the amp transfering to electrical vibration which might creep into the audio output. But even then I have yet to experience any fault from this.

Catch 22. If you have a "loud" enough system your whole vehicle going to vibrate. I have a cammed Camaro 5th gen that vibrates at idle then add in music (sub but also the rest of the speakers). As there are a bunch of loaded boxes with amps (mainly lower cost/price point) and they actually last for awhile. I second the fact (yes, 5 years and a lot of changes) with a little extra bracing and stand offs and as long at the box is actually secure in four corners, if not more, with appropriate hardware, you should be fine. That said, typical vibrations also can effect 90% of the electronics and body on a car. You expect a 5 year life span, mount away. Expect a 10 year life span, better work a bit harder finding room. LOL

But the amp is screwed on the box and the wires from amp to speaker box are a tad short. How do I figure what those wire are and can I just take a speaker out and look in to see if it has that window brace thing.

I’m just curious and very new to car audio installs, but along with the window brace wouldn’t a second 3/4” wall aid in decreasing those vibrations? The install I’m working on is very limited on space for the size enclosure that my subs require and leaves minimal room around it. My initial plan was to add a second baffle to the mounting wall side, use isolators, and mount the amp to where it could be seen between the seats. Is this a bad idea?

Now I'm no expert, but after the dowl you mentioned using a block of wood, but you suggested using it in a matter that would effectively be parallel to the flex this not really resolving the flexing issue. Would it not make more sense to place it perpendicular (to the longest dimension of the plane) across the panel going side to side instead of up and down?
@CarAudioFabrication
@CarAudioFabrication 5 жыл бұрын
You are overthinking it. Obviously if you use a dowel you would want it perpendicular to the surface. I went on to say that might now work though as there might be something in the way. In that case resort to added wood parallel with the surface.

My question is what is your thoughts on putting amps in front of ports? I was considering this as an option to help keep amps cooler. My other question is I looked on your website for box ideas but cant find what I want. How could I work with you in designing a box? I have a picture of a basic idea.
@cafe80s

I don't think the vibration from the box is a big deal for the amp to put up with... With that being said, I never mount the amp to the box. If someone requests it, I explain the problems with that. The wires aren't long enough to allow the box possibly moving when driving (using an off the shelf amp kit). The wire length may make the ground wire visible and may not reach the best grinding spot. So let's say that wire length aren't issues and a back seat could be folded down allowing good access to the amp and wires... In that case the box would have to be secured to keep the wiring from pulling out, and that means it's not removable if the space is needed or to access the spare tire. For a non-custom install, under a front seat is my preferred spot, if not possible then under a back seat, then screwed to the back of the rear seat.

I've been mounting amps to sub boxes for literally decades. If new amps fail because of the "vibrations", then the amp is simply a piece of shit not worthy of your money. Orion amps used to use Mil-Spec circuit boards. Rockford Fosgate amps used to be literally beaten with a rubber mallet before bench burn-in.
