Excellent video. A tip from one paint professional to another, grab a Defelsko -PosiTector ADV gauge body, along with a 6000 probe and a 200-C probe. The 200-C will allow you to see the individual coats on the substrate, via ultrasound. The 6000 is what you were using to measure the total DFT of the entire coating system.

Haha - I loved the outtakes. Shows that people also have a goofy side to their "oooh I'm soo business-y" exterior! :) And good stuff Larry Kosilla / AMMO NYC - the geeked-out mac-book-lightpen thingy really showed what happens when you do all the stuff you do to remove scratches. Would have been awesome to have seen the same stuff on the Mercedes "tank" that you did the other day to see the "mountains" where the paint was keyed.

The "geeked-out mac-book-lightpen thingy" is just a usb microscope. You can buy them online for about $30. They are great investment and excellent for investigating damage, checking your progress and comparing effectiveness of different compounds/polishes. You'll learn so much and improve a lot quicker when you get one of these, so I highly recommend them.

Color sand & buff are not an easy task, you learn with the time and practice, not with one video. This video teaches almost nothing, just present the benefit of using one soft sponge between the sandpaper and the DA. Just try it without previous experience and for sure you gonna make a mess, guaranteed. Honestly, be careful! one youtube video didn't teach you one complex technique.

I feel like this video is incomplete because Jason and you do not explain how to fix the orange peel scratch repair conundrum. I don't know what to do if you have to sand down a scratch on a car with orange peel. Will it just return after compounding and polishing or will it be permanently smooth in that scratch area?
@netguru598

Question, If you can sprayed over a scratch and the colour was slightly off, is it possible to use 1000 grit to remove all the newly sprayed area and possibly use old base coat residue from sanding to blend over the scratch, then wax whole area? Would this result in a uniform colour?

3:50 Noob question. I hope I don't get flamed if this is a stupid question but if the process removes this much paint, then am I correct in assuming that you can only do this 2 maybe 3 times before you have to recoat the entire car? It seems to remove a lot.

Hi Larry, I also have a paint scanner and use it sometimes after I detail my car but my question is at what level paint in mils/microns should someone stop detailing their car so that they wont cut away anymore paint. For ex is 5.45 mils considered thin paint? How low can you polish the paint in mils/microns till its deemed unsafe to polish anymore. Thank you for your help.

Preserving and enhancing are different things. There is no way to paint correct paint that isnt there anymore. You can ceramic coat as suggested but that will preserve all the defects you cant compound out. You can try “scratch x” to mask some of the finer defects (so they advertise).

So what is best way of sanding your 2k primer application? Doing it dry meaning sand it dry. Or do I sand it wet? I love learning new things with respect to auto-body work...I took this vocational training trade during my time in high school. So I am always looking for new techniques on how to do this craft. I can't find all the adequate grits of sanding paper at my local auto body paint and supply store. Is there a link to a company that has everything materials wise and at reasonable prices to be shipped. I do my own work when I am not lazy lol I prep what needs to be done n then I get a shop to paint...

Everything makes sense, but what are the little white specks that are left? Also, why don't we start with sanding always instead of skipping it and going straight to the heavy-cut compound? I always wonder because sanding is so fast and effective but I always worry that it takes off more mils of clear than just doing the heavy cut. Thanks for your answer.

I'm the opposite, I have worked as a detailer for dealerships and detail shops... I want to start on my own just don't have enough money to. its easy you can start by just posting ads and going to dealerships. at first until you build a nice customer base you will have to do dealership cars cuz they always have cars to be cleaned.. there is so much information online, I learned a lot more online than I did working any one of my jobs.. I actually learned the wrong things in most my jobs

I want to get started soon maybe start small as a part-time since I have a job right now and have to pay my bills. What kind of work did you offer to the dealerships? Plz PM me if that is more comfortable for you.
@chrismay1a
@chrismay1a 7 жыл бұрын
I started by just posting adds on craigslist and kijiji in my loacal area. not the best was only getting about 5 cars a week to do. but that was just free advertising. for dealerships I recommend you go in and talk with the general manager. You can use something like square so you can take credit cards, its free an easy to use and helps you keep track of numbers and profits, and they will let you build a site which you put your regular prices on. than you tell dealerships they can have a certain amount of discount per car depending on the amount of cars they have for you to clean. the more cars they have for you to clean the cheaper you do each detail for. I had it set up so I would do 2 dealership cars everyday, so no matter what I made at least 250 dollars every day ( and would work less than 8 hours), than when ever a customer would call I would set aside the dealership car and do the customers car, so some days I would make over 500 and on slow days when no customers called I would still make 250 per day, 7 days a week. but my house flooded than we moved houses and this new house my mom said I am not allowed to detail at so I'm stuck looking for a min wage job so I can save up and find a place I can detail.
@tonyk6815
@tonyk6815 7 жыл бұрын
I hope you see the logical flaw in your story. You were making minimum 5k a month, ($250 everyday) and now your mom said you can't detail cars at your new house.??? How are you bound to your house if you are doing dealership cars? I think you are either lying, or too stupid to realize you don't need your moms permission to detail dealership cars.

My body man doesn't get technical with orange peel, he just gets rid of it with a jean pad and polishes my whole car for 150-200 dollars. Flawless. If a body shop charges you panel by panel, look elseware. I see this alot on the east coast.

Ammo Nyc what is the minimum amount of paint depth (mils) that can safely be corrected?
@rockefelleragent1357
@rockefelleragent1357 6 жыл бұрын
You can use your bare eyes and fingers to examine the paint you can tell if the clear coat is thick or not. Paint you can't tell until you try risking it. Wet-sanding makes paint look real good but the downside is that you can only do a few times. After that the clear coat will be no more and the paint will be exposed. The downside to wet-sanding/buffing is that it reduces the protection from flying debris and you will very easily get paint chips as the clear coat is so thin as a result of wet-sanding and buffing. Doing this on the front bumper or hood of car will be most easily susceptible to chips damage. So if you gonna do the front you might as well wet-sand, apply touch-up for chips, and then clear coat the whole bumper or the hood that'll give you protection. Apply 3+ layers of clear for increased protection. You can then add clear bra on top of that. Wet-sanding would be good idea for the side, top, and rear of the car as the debris impact is minimal...
