+Admiral_Awesome Have to realize that the whole bit was comedy sake. They didn't dyno it properly to begin with. And its nearly impossible to really get a precise measurement of power at the crank from those types of dynos. To be fair its any where from 5-20% power loss from crank to wheels depending on the engine (brand new or old, state of the fluids, state of bearings, type of ignition), transmission (year/month it was built, ratios, auto or stick, new clutch vs old clutch), fwd or rwd, different tires, breaks, temperature, altitude, and humidity. Only true way to test the power is take it to a controlled room and hook the engine directly to the dynometer. But lets account the loss at 13% loss of power resulting in 446hp... at the crank it would be well over 500hp (around 512 actually) at the crank, and saying how they dyno'ed it wrong to begin with, it is well over 500hp.

Just goes to show how much TopGear actually know about Muscle Cars. Hammond doesn't even know the actual name of his own goddam Mustang. And it's not the correct year for a Bullitt Mustang either, the Bullitt car was a 1968, this is a 1967. I still love them to bits though. It just always pissed me off how they dumbed everything down for the sake of comedy.

hansthurfjell you clearly dont know much about cars it makes less hp at the wheels because of drivetrain inefficiencies not because it is hand built. besides a hand built engine it pretty much the same as a machine built because the engine is only assembled by hand but the parts are cnc machined like the rest of the engines out there

The dyno reads the power at the wheels, not at the crank, crank is where power is measured for engine ratings. So the 500 horsepower is accurate. For RWD/FWD vehicles roughly 15% is lost through the drivetrain. For AWD it's roughly 30%.
@03056932
@03056932 8 жыл бұрын
+Jeffrey Osborn assumptions. I would think the dyno operators would be intelligent enough to tell Hammond the figure when the dyno measures the mechanical drag and adds that to the WHP to give the crank horsepower figure. We also know dynos vary tremedously in their readouts so this gt500 measuring 440hp at the crank on this dyno could come back at 500 5 minutes later on another.
@JeffreyOsb

+03056932R The dynos that do that are making a very rough estimate. It isn't nearly as accurate as an actual engine brake. Besides, I would not be surprised if Top Gear purposefully reported the whip instead of the bhp for comedic effect. When they tested the original Tesla they staged the batteries dying multiple times, and ended up having a law suit filed against them for it. None of this should be surprising lol

Anthony Bane Basically the rough numbers I gave you. There is no actual "formula" as the amount lost through the drivetrain varies from car to car and automakers don't actually give the information. The "power" of an engine is rated by engine alone, before it's actually hooked up to any form of drivetrain. So the automakers get the numbers before the engine is actually part of a working car.

Manufacturers under rated their engines all the time. GM used to under rated every engine so that no car would have more power then the corvette, even if it had the same exact engine, aside from special circumstances. My 93 Z28 is rated at 275hp. The same year corvette with the same engine was rated at 300hp. Dyno tests on stock 6-speed low mileage LT1 camaros have shown 268hp at the wheels, which is 304hp at the crank. GM under rated the camaro/Firebird so it wouldn’t be equal to the corvette. The F-bodies were basically a 4-seat corvette for 1/2-2/3 the money. Only because of aerodynamics, a slightly different intake design and exhaust routing allowed the corvette to have a higher top speed.

447 rear wheel hp is more than 500 at the flywheel (and flywheel is exactly how they are measured and rated) If you use the drivetrain loss of 15% for a manual transmission car (automatics are about 20-25% loss) that works out to 425 at the wheels. 447 is almost exactly 525 at the flywheel. Richard is way off.

I remember this episode. And a couple of things stuck out at me. The "rolling road", as they call it, is actually called a dynamometer. It measures horsepower and torque that is being put down to the road through the wheels. Now, everyone knows that dynos measure wheel horsepower and automobile manufacturers measure horsepower at the crank/flywheel. You have to figure in 15-20% driveline loss between the flywheel and differential. Therefore, 447hp at the rear wheels would equal about 514-536hp at the crank. That is pretty accurate according to the 500hp Ford claimed.

To put this to rest for everyone. 1. All United states car manufactures measure hp from the crank. 12-15% drivetrain losses assumed, the 400 and something horsepower that hammond said is right around the correct whp for a 500 "crank horsepower car. 2. Its called a "Dynamometer" not a rolling road. And no, dynamonmeter operators never use the drivetrain loss calculator when "dynoing" cars. They gave the pure whp number. 3. People are saying "oh so you know more than richard hammond?" The answer is YES THEY DO, because hammond said "they take the engine from a mustang gt and supercharger it." WRONG! They make a completely new 5.4 liter engine instead of the 4.6 liter that the mustang gt has. That shows how much hammond and also top gear know about what they are talking about. Now hopefully all of you youtube warriors can see the facts now and stop arguing.

+Konstantinopoljski no originally it was not measured at the wheels. Cars from the earlier years were still crank and they were even more overrated because they were tested using only the engine's power there was an externally controlled water pump radiator fan alternator was excluded. Anything required for the engine to run was external from the engine. They also used long tube headers instead of the headers to be used in production that's why his (327 horsepower gt390 makes 250 while my 04 get with a 4.6 or a 281 engine makes 225 at the wheels or 260 crank

New forged rotating assembly, high lift/duration cams, dry sump oil system, along with all new cylinder heads. Its the same by no means. As for the rolling road name, tomato, toemahtoh

I know this comment will prob stir up a shit load of people who want to educate me on what is the best this or that so let me say right off that I am just voicing my opinion and not bashing on any particular car, and I certainly could be wrong, so here goes..first, I own an 08 gt 500, that being said, I didn't buy it to go screaming into a turn at 100 and yank the wheel. I see this all the time in videos about how unstable and antique the straight axle is under these cars, and it (no pun intended) gets old. Nascar uses straight axle 9 inch ford rearends people, so don't tell me they make a car go uncontrollably sideways around turns. Second, they use the Roush mustang to compare and act like its so much better handling but fail to tell you that its a straight axle too! Amazing what bigger sway bars,dif shocks, and panhard bar will do! not to mention less power to roast the tires! Third, they say at the end that the Roush has a limited slip dif and the Shelby has an open, causing it to spin the inside tires on turns, which is a total lie, they are aquipped with a clutch type ''posi'' which works great by the way. so I guess my point is that I would just buy the Shelby that's 10,000 less, put less than half of that into the rear suspension and the other half in gas & tires, and have some fun!

I know this was 5 years ago, but absolutley agree. One thing I found a tad irritating was they were trying to compare the 'stang to a european standard of car. Each car is specific to a market, and each works well in that market. Euro cars are very refined, have a lot of computers, electronics and driver assists, which makes them very comfortable, and manageable, providing everything works. 'Merican muscle is more brash. Lots of noise. Lots of smoke. Lots of power. And they are designed in a way that allows their market to work on the cars themselves, hence the 'simplicity'. In Aus we have a similar style, or at least did. The 'local' market cars are cheap, dirty mang mobiles, with parts at a dime a dozen, and were specifically built to be backyard mechanic material. You can pull apart and pretty much rebuild the engine from off the shelf parts at the local auto store. Whereas trying to fix a euro car, is like trying to find a cure for cancer.

And besides, most of us Americans are more into Pickup Trucks and other types of bigger vehicles anyways; not some toy-looking vehicles, like the Smart Fortwo. Yet they have the audacity to say “BMW is better than this,” or “Porsche is better than that.” Which as you can tell, that’s obviously coming from a region that prefers having roads that are small enough to even make someone like me claustrophobic. (since I hate tight spaces) Everything else about Europe (more specifically the UK and Ireland) I do like, especially since I had ancestors from there. But when it comes to driving over there, I prefer driving in the USA more than in both the UK and Ireland and also, I think it’s best to accept American cars for what they are, no matter what.

General Geometrix OK, but that’s your opinion. There are things from other countries that are just as worse too anyways. Take brands like Suzuki, Fiat and Smart Car for example. I just want to point out that a new GT500 Mustang is ~$60,000 USD. For roughly the same price, you could get a new BMW M3. For $20,000 less, you could get a new Mitsubishi Lancer EVO. Both are great cars that look amazing and have more modern technology and handle corners better. I get what the Mustang is supposed to be: a shining example of simplistic American engineering that is affordable to the everyman and has a good degree of sport behind it. But I wouldn't call $60,000 a budget muscle car- especially when there are more sophisticated alternatives on the market.

I love Top Gear and I like Hammond but it's a '68 GT with a 390 engine. Ford would say they never made a model called a GT 390 in 1968. A GT 350 doesn;t have a 350 engine and a GT 500 doesn't have a 500 engine, so jamming the engine displacement onto the end of '1968 Ford Mustang GT' makes as little sense as claiming that Ford had a "GT 289" in 1968. ...and in 1968 they did in fact make a GT 500, which would be a more apt comparo

447 at the wheels is at least 496 at the crank, might as well call it 500. All manufacturers go by crank, of course. The exhaust I added to my 2014 GT added 9 on the ground which is about 10 at the crank, so now mine is 430 hp with premium. If I eventually add a cold air intake and Bama tune, I would have something like 464 hp at the crank based on dyno tests showing rear wheel hp gains for, in this order, adding my Ford Racing exhaust (9 rear wheel), then Airaid CAI (11 rear wheel), then Bama tune (20 rear wheel). If you wanna dispute that, watch the videos where they do that in that order. Convinced me, dyno readings don't lie, and they did it on a somewhat hot day, which made numbers on the weak side. Once my warranty dies maybe I'll add the CAI and the Bama. Gas mileage right now on extended flat road with auto transmission, mostly with cruise control: 74 mph: 24.3 65 mph: 27 40 mph: 31 Manufacturer rating for highway is 25, so I'm happy with those numbers. Transmission is rumored to be good for 800 pounds of torque, though draggers seem to rebuild them if they're gonna run more than 600. I figure if I ever to 468 hp I don't have to worry about the transmission, as I don't beat it all the time. Personally, I wouldn't run the tranny more than 500 pounds. I doubt I'd ever be more than about 430 pounds at 468 hp. I'd love to get a kit to lower the car 1.5", but here in New England (New Hampshire) that's maybe a bad idea, even though I don't run it the salt on frost heaves.

We don't live in 1971 anymore. You should know that we stopped measuring hp at the crank. HP at the wheels is all that matters. Measuring hp at the crank is like testing the top speed of a car equipped with nitrous, it is going to be more than what it is in reality.

Brandon Camel 153 weeks later and I reply. Always nice. Yes, the fan could indeed make a difference. But a 10% Difference...? I very much doubt this. Why would running it around the track matter? Both cars were driven on the track first so thats not a factor. The engines were reved and the things the wheels rotate on provide resistance to measure the power in the first place.
