Sometimes the path home isn't as rosy as we would like it to be. Every adopted child has a story to tell, a past with memories. Some are good, some are bad, some are traumatic. In this episode, Bethany, who is 19, and was born blind due to ROP, shares a bit about her adoption journey.
Disruptions in adoption are more frequent than most people expect. One in four adoptions of a child over 3 years old is either disrupted or dissolved. In other words, it fails. There are stories on all sides.
Bethany was adopted from Thailand when she was seven, and joined our family after that initial placement didn't work out.
We had applied to adopt Bethany directly from Thailand when she was three years old, but we were rejected by the Thai government because we did not meet their standards. We were "too old" and had "two many kids".

Tiffany Jones speaking from experience- it’s far better to be thrown in cold than hot. You can get used to the cold. Can’t get used to the hot. These are reasons I want to be a social worker. If only my social workers knew what was happening in my foster home. Most foster children are sexually or physically abused (usually by other foster children- but still, it’s the atmosphere altogether). They have what is called guardian etlitem (I have no clue how to spell it- I just know how to say it. It’s pronounced eh-T Lie-tuhm) who is supposed to be an interpreter between the child and the courts but I only ever seen mine while at court- only talked to her a few times. Foster children need more people to stand up for them. A lot of the times, it’s not our faults we are where we are. I wasn’t in foster care because *I* done something wrong& I shouldn’t be punished because of it.

@@ReadObituaries social workers don't fucking help. I've been in situations where I had to deal with social workers regarding abusive family member and THEY DONT FUCKING HELP. They're in it for the job security or money or something that makes them feel better. I genuinely believe there's only a handful of social worker who actually genuinely care about people. Sorry, this is just coming from someone with a horrible experience regarding domestic violence and abuse with social workers who don't care

Its not 'misguided', its intentionally cruel! You dont need to make excuses for these people. Forgiveness may be noble, I suppose, but not when its gives awful people a pass to do awful things. We need less forgiveness and more reform!

I had a friend who had CP, she worked and she asked me to babysit her son, he was 3 then. I did this for several years, sometimes I took him for sleepovers, as he got older about 8 she was having behavioral issues with him, so I kept him for awhile (maybe 6 mths). I wanted to keep him, and let him visit her. He had bonded with us and called my sons his brothers. She decided not to. When he was about 9 she placed higher m with another family, I found out later. I still managed to see him once in a while, I kept in touch as much as possible. He wet the bed, but we would wake him up around midnight to go pee and he never wet the bed when with us. Fast track to 18, he showed up at our place and asked me why we didn't keep him. We were crying, I told him I wasn't in control of the situation. He told me about the sexual abuse he endured at the hands of his mother's boyfriend and both sexual and physical abuse in the other home. He said, you were my family and I thought you gave me away. Sad story, heart breaking!

Sadly parents who foster children are like that. My mom would have to stand for hours at a time when she was little in foster care for a punishment. Not saying all foster families are bad but most people just do it for the money and not care about the children. My mom told me out of 20 foster family's she had only 1 of them actually loved the her and treated the kids right.

I'm only 15, but I still want to adopt in the future due to my fear of getting pregnant.

I'm so glad Bethany felt comfortable enough to share those events from her past with us. I've heard horror stories of kids going through the foster system and ending up with awful families, so I'm happy you were able to adopt her! My home life was stable growing up, however I was in an abusive relationship about ten years ago, but finally managed to break it off. I very recently came to terms with the trauma from it (I had blocked most of it from my memory), and finally came out and told my parents what had happened. I'm in my mid-twenties and my current boyfriend has been nothing but respectful and supportive of me as a person. Honestly I believe that God has a plan for all of us, and that was for Bethany to be with your family and for me to come to terms with my past.

You did not deserve ANY of what you went through as a kiddo, that wasn't fair... We have had trauma as well, so we know how all that can effect someone. We have D.I.D ( dissociative identity disorder), at a very young age (3) trauma was so intense that the mind split into other personalities. Currently, I live with 70+ other people that are in my head but can come out into the body just as a normal person. They have different ages, genders, religions, etc. One of our Alters is named Val and he too, is blind :) he's one of the sweetest people just as all you wonderful guys are. He loves to listen to your videos from time to time, as he's not co-conscious or fronting often. My point is, trauma happened yet you pulled through and became such a strong and beautiful young lady. She is an adorable little girl. It would be a shame to lose her emotionally. It seems like they mean well, but my goodness! As a parent, I would be more interested to know why she does it....that's just me. I told her about the backwards pajama trick- that WILL prevent access to the diaper and keep her safe from it's contents until she can be fully toilet trained. Maybe she would stop on her own...no parent is perfect, including us, but these types of practices make me a little crazy.....

With this video I hope more adoptive families and heads of foster homes learn to control their frustrations on children who dont know any better. I cant see how this form of discipline can properly curb misbehavior for most children and could really cause confusion and toxic self identification for kids growing up. I understand that people who adopt/foster are typically eccentric as adoption isnt a common occurrence, but this type of punishment can be lazy, misguided, traumatic, and not effective. I’m super glad and thankful Bethany was able to share her story to give awareness for all the new parents out there to be more mindful for the children’s sake. It might be small, but its an amazing gesture for her to be able to be open about this and I’m so happy Bethany grew up as such a sweet, kind and grounded person despite this little parenting mistake. So glad to see such a great person is now in such a loving, safe and caring home. Thanks for the vids guys! I love your family you guys are great!

Situations like these get me all mad and upset at anyone who could even for a millisecond think about treating a kid wrongly whether intending to be or just misguided. I could NEVER forgive that offense If I could get ahold of the people who think doing these things to a kid is okay. I’m afraid it won’t be pretty my salvation only goes so far blind or not I’m afraid I might light into somebody if I ever come across anyone mistreating a child On a happier note I’m so grateful that Bethany and all the kids made it to a family where they are dearly loved and get told so and shown often

The look in her eyes when she was explaining that stuff made me so sad. My best friend was a foster kid and has very similar stories and so it was unfortunately not surprising, but really sad. I'd be Bethany's friend in a heartbeat if I weren't... you know... Canadian. Lol.

my child has autism and I cannot imagine someone in this world being so cruel to them or to hurt them in any kind of way on purpose out of frustration or whatever it may be. having a child cry out by being put in a stressful or uncomfortable situation is just despicable to me. I'm glad your babies found true love with you guys it doesn't happen very often that they turn out so wonderful After experiencing anything negative you've done an amazing job

Have any of the kids (who can) spoken to someone? It has really helped me to have someone impartial and nonjudgmental to talk to. The things Bethany is describing are awful, and it might be useful for her and the other older kids to help any bad memories or experiences. I am a massive proponent of therapy and anyone who reads this should look into it, regardless of whether you have a mental illness or not! Everyone needs someone neutral to talk to sometimes :) I'm so glad that Bethany is doing better now! It's great that you found each other, even through the twists and turns! 💕

I'm so sorry bethany that you went through that with that other family . That is not love . Telling and showing a child love is 2 different things. You can tell a child you love them as much as you want but if you dont show them then how do they know.
@lifesong8484
@lifesong8484 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. In fact, to abuse a child & then tell them you did it out of love this is just further abuse. It is emotional abuse. If those previous foster carers actually believed they were doing it out of love, they are deluding themselves. Excusing their own abusive behaviour.

THIS MOTHER IS SO CALM LOGICAL FULL OF LOVE POSTIVE. IM CRYING MY EYES OUT EVEN AS A ADULT OF A SURVIVOR OF ABUSE PHYSCIALLY MENTALLY IM CRYING BECAUSE SHE SPEAKS TO ALL HER CHILDREN LIKE THEY ARE EQUAL AND THAT BRINGS CONFIDENCE... BETHANY IS SO CALM LOVING AND RADIATES LOVE. I am still full of care and love and i was the person who would say hello to someone who is autistic or blind ect. My mother took us to church and after church i was beaten or hit over the head with a metal spoon just if i couldnt remember the lords prayer. Or got a math problem wrong. Im a adult now but i have to tell you these scars live on but this mother heals the wounds and it may sound stupid i listen to her to helo me. And tbe children are full of wisdom also. THANKYOU FOR YOUR FAMILY DAY 2 IM WATCHING EVERY VIDEO....

Dawn...I am very sorry for all you have endured. You are right about abuse leaving permanent scars, but you CAN learn to overcome these things and turn all those negative lessons around to your own advantage. You have a clear idea of how NOT to parent. You clearly understand the effects of words and actions on a child. They say that the abused will abuse, but it does not have to be like that. You can break the cycle and I believe you will! God bless you, Dawn...❤

Thank you, Bethany, for opening up and sharing a little peek into your past, when you were transitioning, until you finally made it home to your loving family. I'm SO HAPPY for you that things worked out the way they did, because you have such an awesome set of parents & siblings you can relate to. I'm sorry you had to go through some rough times to get there, but SO GLAD you made it!! I guess we all go through rough times in our lives, which makes us REALLY appreciate when things go to good. I always enjoy seeing that big smile you always have on your face!! You seem to be a VERY HAPPY person! It's always nice to see how loving, kind and helpful you are with your family. I know you have a very special bond with your brother, Obed & that is SO AWESOME!!! Thank you, again, for sharing some of your experiences. You are such a wonderful, special gal! 🙂💞

Bethany, you are such a sweet soul, I felt your pain behind your forgiveness of that other family. It is the first time, I have been able to see your beautiful eyes, because when you smile, it catches people’s hearts. I think you found the right family, so that you can be the big sister to Obed, and I hope you enjoy school this year. I live in New Zealand, and it is the end of winter here, and summer at Christmas time, so our school year runs from February to December.🥰

My heart breaks to hear what happened to Bethany .... But God took her out of there and put her into a loving home, where love is everywhere and she had to go through some bumpy stuff, but that made her stronger, and even more of a powerful outspoken person and caring.... and she bonds so well with Obed .. she has such a sweet spirit about her.... I am so glad she was taken out and put into a loving home, and God protected her from further harm... So glad you guys got her.. everything in Gods time..

So strong of Bethany to forgive, we can all use a reminder of the power that has in healing for ones self and great comforting words from mom. Misguided is the perfect word to describe this kind of punishment from someone who's supposed to care for and teach you. I feel it's all too common for some parents who are not ready for children to think a form of punishment will teach kids not realizing the lasting impact instead of just sitting down and talking with them. I'll tell you my story from childhood when I would get sick a lot from certain foods so I was scared to eat dinner sometimes, If I didn't eat I would get a small spoonful of cinnamon or the family would have candy for dessert now and then and I would only get to smell the wrappers.
@SixBlindKids
@SixBlindKids 4 жыл бұрын
Making you only smell candy wrappers or giving cinnamon for punishment are very similar tactics this first family used. I wonder if they read the same book...what a horrible thing to do to kids! Just learn from those misguided things and move forward. I'm so sorry..❤

Please know, my daughter and my son were both older than 7 and have always lived in a very loving home here in the US and still had accidents. Its a common thing.
