Cut from Romanian movie "Pentru Patrie" (For the Fatherland) 1977.
The Siege of Plevna, or Siege of Pleven, was a major battle of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, fought by the joint army of Russia and Romania against the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman defense held up the main Russian advance southwards into Bulgaria for five months, encouraging other great powers actively to support the Ottoman cause. Eventually, superior Russian and Romanian numbers forced the garrison to capitulate. The Russian-Romanian victory on 10 December 1877 was decisive for the outcome of the war and the Liberation of Bulgaria.

There were so many Mosin Nagant rifles in Eastern Europe in 1977 that they just gave everybody playing both sides Mosin Nagants as their single shots. An armorer can just remove the magazine of a Mosin Nagant and the rifle will look exactly like a 17th-19th century musket.

“The Ottoman Empire purchased 45,000 [Winchester] 1866 rifles and 5,000 carbines in 1870 and 1871. These rifles were used in the 1877 Russo-Turkish War, causing much surprise when outnumbered Turks at the Siege of Plevna inflicted many times more casualties than their opponents armed with single-shot Krnka and Berdan rifles. The effect of the 1866 at Plevna sparked a renewed interest in the adoption of repeating rifles for several European countries.“ Wikipedia

You're not telling the truth. In 1877-78, the Russian Army was armed with Berdan rifles and carbines, 1870 model, Colt revolvers, winchesters... The Ottoman Empire lost all the wars with Russia, (including this war strategically and tactically, on the battlefields). I think that if the Porta had not oppressed its Christians, but continued its development, as in 16 (without interventions to Russia), then there would not have been such wars.
@ionbrad6753
@ionbrad6753 2 жыл бұрын
@@user-yy9hg4qc5k He is telling the truth. He did not say the Ottomans didn't lose. He just quoted wikipedia in which the number of the victims are presented. Yeas, Russian and Romanian casualties were significantly higher than Turkish ones. This is partially due to superior rifles in Turkish army, partially due to the fact that Turks were defending fortified positions. Turks lost this war because they were heavily outnumbered. When they occupied the Balkans, it was usually the other way around. Now they tasted their own recipe... On the other hand, for Russia the Christian oppression was just a pretext. Russian Empire expansion targeted Christian lands, too: Ukraine, Poland, half of Moldova, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Armenia etc etc

Oryahovo (romanians call it Rahova) is ancient Bulgarian town, located in North Bulgaria on the banks of the Danube river. In the Middle Ages there was a Bulgarian fortress, captured and destroyed by the Turkish occupiers during Ottoman turkish invasion in Europe. During the great Russo-Turkish war of liberation in 1877-1878 the city was liberated by Romanian troops. Romania joins Russia in this war, and as a reward Russia gives it the Bulgarian region of Northern Dobrudja.

Um... Romania took South Dobruja by force in the 3rd Balkan war. Bulgaria refused to give South Dobruja. As Bulgaria refused to respect the treaty, Romania got triggered and planned invading Bulgaria, but Russia stopped Romania in time. When the Balkan war came, and Bulgaria invaded Greece and Serbia, the campaign of Romania invading Bulgaria from north was a success, which led to the Ottomans joining the war against Bulgaria too. As Bulgaria was surrounded, they capitulated, and gave Romania South Dobruja, Turkey got land too, Greece and Serbia gained more land too, resulting Bulgaria to be cut from the Aegean Sea.

@@acmusic9974 Second, you are seriously mistaken. For example - there is no such thing as a Third Balkan War. There is the First Balkan War of 1912-1913 (the union of Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece and Montenegro against the Ottoman Empire (the Turks). There is also the Second Balkan War of 1913 - Bulgaria against Serbia, Greece, Montenegro and the Ottoman Empire + Romania, which included in the war with a great desire to annex territories from Bulgaria. The Second Balkan War broke out because huge territories, almost entirely inhabited by the Bulgarian population, remained under Serbian, Greek and also Turkish occupation, which carried out genocide against the local population characterized by many massacres, ethnic cleansing and even with the forced replacement of the Bulgarian names of the population with the names of the occupiers, as well as a ban on speaking the Bulgarian language. Women, children and newborns were not spared in the massacres... The Turks were the most diligent in torture and massacres. The same atrocities are committed by the Romanians in the Bulgarian regions of Northern and Southern Dobrudja, so the entire Bulgarian population is outraged by the atrocities on Sonaro his days remaining in the occupied territories and as a result the Second Balkan War began.

Battle of Alesia, Julius Caesar ordered his legions to dig thousands of foot sized holes and place a spike of metal or a small wooden stake in them. These acted like punji pits from the Vietnam war era. Disrupted Gallic charges and broke horses legs if the cavalry charged. The Roman line encircled the Gallic city was a multiple layered defence in depth Palisade and ditch fortification which faced inwards towards the besieged city and outwards to fend off the reinforcements coming to relieve the siege. The final days battle if the numbers are to be believed is still one of the bloodiest most devastating days in Human history.

One has to wonder why no one seems to have learned much from Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg right up to 1918 at the least. Mass wave frontal attacks require something like three times the number of attackers than defenders with intense artillery barages, firstly to thin the defensive positions and then creeping fire in front of the attackers.

It works only if the attacker achieves surprise and the defender is not fortified on all sides. Otherwise - the defender would re-align his defense well before the atacker completes his envelopment maneuver. Also, envelopment costs time which is sometimes very precious. There is no universal war winning strategy, each situation is different.

I would also say that they most likely had a lot of Mosin Nagant and other old rifles in the army stock, so they may have been used to represent the Krnka and other single shot rifles Romania had at the time (during the war, the main rifles used were the Krnka, Dreyse and Peabody M1867). Keep in mind this was done during the communist regime, when if needed, you could just call the army for hundreds of extras. But in other battle scenes of the movie, the Ottomans at least have rifles that are closer to their real counterpart at the time, the Martini-Henry. Another interesting detail in the movie is the artillery used. Some of the pieces lokk like converted 75mm Puteaux M1897 field guns.

American soldiers may have been armed with muskets in the late 19th century. But the Turkish army was armed with modern British rifles, and many of the officers in the Turkish army were British, including several generals. The Turkish army also received several hundred Krupp cannons. The British navy also acted in the service of the Turks and against the Christian population in the Balkans. In general, Britain and the countries of Western Europe have provided enormous military and material assistance to Turkey in this war, pursuing their own interests and not caring about the Christian population in this part of Europe, subjected to genocide, massacres, rapes - just because they are not Muslims.

They use Mosins for the movie, because they look a bit like Berdan 2 rifles, and it‘s impossible to find so many Berdans, there are few of them in the museums.

bro what was going on between 1850 and 1950... our world was full of war and people killing each other, all over the globe , its so crazy. Civil wars, 2 world wars, wars in Europe, in North America, South America... literally everywhere. Our last 50 years have been pretty chill if you compare it to that period.

În reality Russia asked help from us. Not otherwise. We weren't interested with this war, so at first we allowed Russia to use our land for their military actions, but when they suffered too much losses they asked help from us, and we actioned. We participated in Pleven(actually we ended that battle by taking the Grivița redoubt, opening a clear path to the besieged city), Rahovo and Vidin, so the russians togheeter with bulgarian volunteers could advance southward without being threatened from western ottoman garrisons and liberated Bulgaria.
