Part 1 Here, • Barn Find 1970 Mercury...
I picked up this 1970 mercury cougar about 10 months ago as a basket case, it had been in a wreck in 1977 then stored in a cow barn until 2003 when Mike (the guy l bought it from) bought it for parts but found it too nice to scrap, He then took it apart restoring over time. then I purchased it as a basket case finishing the car.

Dear @@mustie1 To be honest: At first I was quite a bit sad/disappointed that you didn't want us viewers right by your side as usual. But all that thinking disappeared instantly after hearing you having sooo much fun with this car. It's absolutely always a real pleasure to see/hear you laughing respectively havin' fun. I'm so glad that you have been able to fulfill a bucket list dream. Congrats! I bet that 5150mxVW and little petrolhead Josh will love this car too. All the best luck with this fantastic Cougar. Yea. I grew up in Europe, 4 banger capital of the world, then first time I came to america I rode in a 1962 Chrysler , I think it had a retro 383 ... I was mesmerized.. even recently .. we have some newer vehicles with aluminum block V8's .. then recently we got a 1995 Ford van with 351W and it just runs that much nicer

I hate VW motors .. a precious FEW sound good, but yeah, once I got a Datsun 1200 with a superb motor rebuild that could wind up crazily I never, ever looked back at VWs. But I have been told a good VW and its driver are hard to beat.

@@aris21067 I seen one at a show that had a small block Windsor and knew someone that had a lime green one with a big block Cleveland. The 351 Windsor is basically a 302 with a half inch more deck height ( stroke ) and the hex shaft between the oil pump and distributor is a little bigger. A friend of had a 70 Torino with a 351 C and 4 barrel heads. A back of 100's cigarettes could stand up in the exhaust ports.

Beautiful car Mustie, I can tell this is a special car and means a lot to you. I bought my first car in 1982, one month before my 17th birthday. It was a 1968 Cougar XR7, Nordic blue with a black vinyl top. I found it on a Mercury dealers lot also. I still have it and every time I get behind the wheel it brings back so many good memories. So I know exactly how you feel about your "new" Cougar. For me it was the sequential tail lights and the beautiful dash and interior that sold me on the car. Hope you take the time this summer to enjoy your beautiful car and relive some great memories.

Oh' yes Cougars were or could be factory hotrods. Depends on which model you had. They made a few with Boss 302 & some small hand full with Boss 429's. Even a lot of them in XR-7 trim were packing some mean horsepower. But, the main hotrod's were S-Code 390's. and the ones that had Cobra Jet 428's. My 1970 Cougar "Eliminator" came with the R-Code Super Cobra Jet 428 Drag-Pac from the factory. I sure wish I had that car back today.

My uncle had a 70, green one. My earliest memory was of helping him work on the car. I was I guess 4 years old (1974) (this is family lore). He asked me to roll a tire to him so I did. Apparently I started laughing at the car. He was under it doing something. The hood was up and flames were shooting out of the hood and I stood there laughing. My family reminds me of this all the time. He got it out in time and it didnt hurt anything, was just the carb. He had that car all the way through the 70s and by the time I was 10 he used to take me for a ride. I would sit in the back seat (no car seats or seatbelts back then) He would do "the cougar" and wave the car back and forth going down the road. I would slide from one side of the seat to the other. To this day I take my kids for a ride I do "the cougar" for them. They like myself giggle.

Yes, you forgot about how the ford solenoid works on the second small terminal. That terminal is the 'full 12V while cranking" terminal. Then when you let off the key, it reverts to voltage through a ballast voltage through the key switch. (around 8 volts or so). This provides hot spark for starting and then a lower voltage while running so not to burn out the coil. (edit:or points)

It looks great, you did a nice job getting it back together. When that engine went to sleep it was drinking super leaded gas, now it woke up to drinking unleaded gas with ethanol in it. You should check to see if the exhaust valves have hardened seats installed on them.

Most old ford's had an ignition wire through a resister wire to save points, and a straight 12v from the start solenoid, for starting. If you look at the solenoid, it's marked I for ignition on one of those posts, S for start wire from key switch, mounting bracket is the ground.

I was thinking this too. JunkYard Digs has a great explanation of it in one of his vids.

So if the resistor wire was missing or open, that would explain why the ignition cuts out when you let go of the starter switch?
@KrS14
@KrS14 3 жыл бұрын
I believe it works like this:. It's actually a 9v coil. When the starter is engaged the ballast resister is NOT in the circuit. Because the starter current drags the voltage down to 9-10 volts, the coil is fine. When you let off the key, the ballast resister is placed in circuit so the 12v is pulled down to 9v (since the starter isn't dragging the vintage down any longer. So it's most likely the ballast resister is bad/open. I hope that makes sense ;)

The reason the spark occurs when cranking is when the solenoid is activated the small wire on the solenoid closest to the starter cable gives full 12volts to the ignition coil while cranking.

@@fredfabris7187 not a fail pint, he said he sent the engine and trans out. Bet he gave it the sport treatment,Had a 68 mustang I did in 78 for brackets raceing at Great Lakes dragway . Even a 350 starter had a hard time with that 302 when it was hot. Used a Chrysler that gear reduction and that worked well

You have a very nice driver! I have no idea how you got that dash together as nicely as you did, but, kudos! Nice job in getting the front headlight doors & rear turn signals running - they usually don't work on these old Cougars. I was also impressed as to nicely the doors close and sound; back in the late '60s through the '70s, most American iron doors did not close with a thunk, but a CRASH....

Thanks Mustie. That brought back memories of the 80's. My late brother in law's was a green 69. Used to borrow it here and there when my car was in the shop. As I remember, his had the same issue with downshifting. He always said it was the transmission. Not that I knew anything about cars, so I figure he knew what he was talking about. I loved that car though. Always thought the Cougars would become more popular as Mustangs were getting to be collector cars back in the 80's. Enough rambling for now. Thanks for bringing back great memories with this.
