Spent many happy years building up new and repairing used motorcycles. New or old I always used copper grease on any stud, bolt, nut subjected to much heat. Saved me hours of work later on. Steel bolts into an aluminium cylinder is any mechanics nightmare. After a lifetime of working on all kinds of equipment, now retired, I learn something new and useful every time I watch. Thankyou.

Been a master tech for years and love your channel. all ways learning something new even at 59. oh crap 60, nope 59. yea 59. anyways I'm getting back into the VW craze. just got a 76 Beatle that I built years ago 30+ been sitting in a field for 28 of those years. cleaned carb fresh gas and she fired rate up and purred. Ok back to subject. cleaning those close threads is a pain, I take the nut and cut a groove with one of those vibrating air sawz allz. they have thin blades that fit in there nice and deep like. usually three groves works great

I do not create original content for KZfaq as I do not have the patience for the editing. My subscription is around 25 channels and I ruthlessly purge the list every few months. Mustie1 has survived every purge I have completed simply because it is a channel to which I can directly relate. His garage, his tools, his approach are likely as close to reality as I have seen. Was getting a little fatigued with the serious YT stuff, and then your video, nice and long, but relaxing, came at just the right moment. So many KZfaqrs have gone to the serious "Wranglerstar" and "Casey Neistat" level of polish, with musical accompaniment, with drones and professional editing. Not a bad thing, but for garage shenanigans, just simple work and commentary is a nice respite. Keep it up and don't change too much! God Bless!

Solid hex dies are known as rethreading dies. For fixing or cleaning alreadt threaded studs or bolts.HSS split dies are for threading.

when using a nut to clean threads, it helps to take a little file and cut a couple notches perpendicular to the threads. that way the crap has a place to go and it has a little cutting action.

There was a whole other Universe in the Exhaust!! Oh!! The Molecules!! Where did they come from?!! Mustie, you are a Master of Threads. You go Way beyond Thread Mastery. You think like I do, and then some.

I used a black ABS sewer pipe once to replace the center heat tube, worked out great !

that's the real fine work on the engine compartment I know it a pain about that exhaust nuts I used the same what you using yeah that plastic burns out their are a fastener company's that make one's that don't burn out they have copper ring inside the top replacing the plastic that's the one's I seen they are made for heat and are in standard and metric don't know if they have them on the net just those plastic do some times back out sometimes it is what it is thanks for video hope you get back with another fine video

I know that they make "Pipe expanding kits". E Bay has pages of them for sale from $13.99 US, up to 1000's of dollars. I'm just not a fan of slicing the tubes. Or because you have that wonderful lathe, I might have made my own from blank tubes or round stock, picked up from your local metal scrap yard. Just a thought, not criticizing. I enjoy your videos, you have a way of informing your viewers without talking down to them/us. I also enjoy watching your videos, simply for you use of your tripod. More often then most amateur KZfaq producers.

Those heater pipes sure were a pain... Aftermarket VW parts of the tin variety sort of fits. Hey WOW! That tracked amphibious vehicle you showed at the end, I never forget an iconic thing when I have seen one and I knew I had seen one like that years ago. I must have looked at a thousand pictures of snow machines and was JUST about to give up when I saw a picture of a similar machine! I don't know what year the one you showed is but it's obviously a tad newer The one I saw had a slightly different front hull everything else is the same. The machine I found was a 1952 Pontiac Otter! It seems like it was picked up by nearly every military branch and served in as different environments as Vietnam and the Polar regions... The one you showed looks like it was one of the M76 Vietnam era machines, but could have been used just about anywhere. Not to many of those left... The body of it is aluminum. Wicked cool, I'm sure I saw it in some newsreels from 'Nam.

Here's a tip for future use , get a nut and cut the threads internally with a junior hacksaw then plenty of lube and run it up and out the students, should clean the rusted threads up perfectly.

A good idea for the exhaust studs I do all the time to freshen up threads is to use stainless steel nuts (if you can find metric). The stainless nut is harder and does a great job chasing the threads down to a nice and clean surface.

I just got my first official plasma cutting glasses last week and they are a shade 5. I've been using tinted safety glasses for the last 7-8yrs. Still trying to get used to the darker lenses.

God, I forgot how bad road salt rust was. I was stationed at Westover AFB in the early 70's and in Minnesota on the early 80's now I remember why I swore I would never live in salty country again. We are fortunate the rarely use road salt in western Wyoming and when they do I stay off of the roads.

I have taken dies and run them on backwards carefully to get the threads cleaned a little closer to the end.

You can also take a grade 8 hex nut and with a very narrow jewelers file , file two or three grooves perpendicular to the threads and accomplish the same thing.

I learn so much between your page and a few others, but whatever direction you proceed concerning your content, length of time per episode, etc, please do not edit out too much 'dead' time. I find that I learn as much from how you get out of trouble, as I do from your basic instruction. Keep up the good work.

Using a narrow metal cutting jig saw blade I've cut radial slots in a sacrificial nut for thread chasing where I couldn't fit a threading die in. If the nut is heavy enough, just cutting one slot from the outside with a sawzall, or hacksaw will work... The junk goes into the slot/s.

As a thread chaser in tight spots like those exhaust studs, you can take a nut, ideally hardened/grade 8 (or whatever the spec on metric is for hardness), and using as thin a cutting wheel as you can get, slice through it to the hole. Clean up the threads on the nut with tap, THEN use that nut as your thread chaser. The slot allows chips, rust, whatever, to come out as you put it on. RichE

Hey Mustie, have ya ever tried tire shine on engines to clean and improve appearance? I’ve found it to work very well . Get the engine warm, spray tire shine liberally all over engine bay, let stand for 5 min, then reapply, wait 5 min, then use an air nozzle to blow off excess and any puddling found in areas with recesses like spark plug wells. Really works well. Give a try, its not expensive, too time consuming or requiring too much effort. In my opinion, the results are well worth it.

Job time, especially the first time doing it, always takes longer. Example: Did some floor repairs last week, thought it would take 4-5 hours, and it took 12 hours total. Sometimes it gets really frustrating.

I know this is an old video, but wanted to point out that measuring temperature of shiny metals with IR thermometers is pretty tricky. Often they'll read wildly incorrect values since the metal surface is IR reflective and not very emissive -- A good way to combat this is to paint a spot of matte black on the surface you're measuring (if aesthetics allow ;) )

Use a sliced nut to clean those hard to get treads. I have a selection of sliced stainless (A2) nuts, and they cut all the rust and crap out in no time.

These pan cake engines are a fuel injected nightmare and exhaust/plumbing gone amok! Also the heads on the later air cooled Vanagons are prone to dropping their valve seats due to a design/interference construction defect! i would recommend a 1800 CC dual carb engine with upright fan for this bus.

You can make taps and die to clean up threads by simply cutting a groove along the thread. Example would be an old spark plug with a groove cut in the thread when its screwed in will lift out the debris. I saw you use a nut and if you can cut a groove through it with a small hack saw it will work better.

Have you ever used a castle nut for a thread chaser? with the castle side toward the stud ?

When your driving a exhaust pipe on get your sacrifice 3/8 th extension with a deep weel socket to not damage the threads

Just a thought - when you used that flange nut to clean the thread on those tricky studs, could you have made the nut into a sort of thread chaser? If you used a triangular rat-tail file to make some 'flutes' in the nut thread, it would have made a bit of a channel to allow the crap to move out of the way. Also, if you were able to angle the file appropriately, you could have put a bit of an edge on the flute...

The owner did not want it soda blasted before all the finish work? The under carriage looks pretty rusty.

22:00...a lot of times, you can turn a nut into a "pseudo-die" by sawing halfway through the nut.

FYI: I found 1/2" copper pipe worked well to drive those exhaust manifolds on without mucking up stud threads.....

Didn't see any exhaust manifold gaskets come out when you removed that one. Unless I'm mistaken aren't there suposed to be copper oval shaped gaskets on type 4 exhaust manifolds?

What if those valves happened to be open as you spray off the studs you chased? Couldn't the shavings get into the cylinders? Maybe it would have been a bit better to plug the exhaust ports?
