It's here! After the initial teaser "feature jam" video - • Mutable Instruments - ... - here's the full overview video for Rings. Throughout we'll go through the Resonator modes, different external inputs and the polyphony settings. It's a fairly long video as I wanted to cover a lot of ground regarding different musical content across different audio inputs and using different sequences to highlight the polyphonic strumming and resonators etc. Timings for all the sections are below to aid some video skipping if you just want to check certain things out.

Great run down. I've pulled the pin. All the smd parts are in place - just waiting on the panel and the smaller pots. I've also knocked up a Mikrophone from parts in the spares box. With the sounds demo'd on this clip it's going to be fun. Looking forward to twiddling (and tapping, strumming, rubbing, and sctratching!)

+mark harpum Just imagining what that would sound like with the multisampled Una Corda I bought a while back, or with an electric piano, especially in the upper ranges. A combo that had that post reverb on a send would be something when used with acoustic guitar. A bit like when I used to use sine wave glissandos, pitched to a particular scale, as impulsive responses in a convolution reverb to get drones that would emphasize a particular scale or mode. Except with this module you can can control pitch dynamically so you're not struck to a single key or mode. It pisses me off that I'm in debt, or I'd be buying a module like this every week. This and virtually everything else from this particular developer is one to look to, when my financials are a bit more healthy:)

Was played around with a contact mic into rings and stumbled on the EXACT strumming sound of the intro to Sigur Ros’ ‘Hafsol’ - I couldn’t believe how similar it sounded.

DivKidVideo had elements when I got into modular never gelled with it as much as I do today with rings - inexperience maybe ;-)

Elements has a whole other side of it to learn, the left side exciter. And there's a lot of excitement that could sound harsher or softer etc. Modal synthesis needs and requires both to really get going, but the little pulse Rings generates creates such a nice sound through Rings that I know many don't look beyond it.

Hello, very inspiring video and has got me exploring rings every day. Like others , I love your polyphony section and melody. I’m a long time musician but am just getting into modular, so I’m a little slow at times with the technical end of things .. is your strum melody/rhythm split to the volts per octave ? are the strums also just grabbed from your melodic midi sequence ? Gonna explore guitar into the strum tonight :)

I've owned rings for over a year but had no idea you could process audio! DUH!. Purchased for its Psudo duophonic in the second mode on both sides.Also anyone thinking of buying this should be aware this puts out a very high level of signal which certain destinations were not handling depending on the settings. I purchased passive jacks that pad the outputs 6db per side. Not a problem if you are plugging rings into something that can handle the load

Yeah it's a resonator so that's what it's meant for. Totally easy to miss though as it works so well with the normally functionality and on board pulse generator striking the resonator.

I can't decide for you there. Two are sound generators and two are processors (primary functions) so that's the first choice to make. Braids has more variety, Rings is the stronger at what it does but does less comparatively.

I need some help understanding the strum input... what is yours connected to throughout most of this? All i can figure is to use a lfo and get a steady rhythm... also, with no strum input a single note cannot be struck 2x in a row? seems to be my experience...

it's the gate output from a MIDI to CV sequencer. That's right with the pitch CV input, it's just detecting changes. So you'd need a strum input (gate) to do that.

I'd get a stereo mixer and mix down both stereo outputs of Rings to one stereo signal and put that into Clouds. Alternative you have a Rings for hard left and Rings for hard right. Or mix them in mono and just go mono into Clouds.

I came back here again - Prof. DivKid, the bass timbre is amazing indeed, I will try to recreate it. I wonder why you have both strum & 1v/oct plugged in all the time. In your examples it sounds like every new note is a changed note, so then Rings would extract a strum anyways or is this the "secret" to your tight bass examples? What do you strum with in the Bass-examples - the same gate which drives the sequencer of the 1v/oct? Or the gate accompanying each note from DAW? Thaaaanks!

Hey, cheers for the question and comment. I'd plugged in the strum when making the patch so that I could "re-strum" the same note. Rings will detect pitch changes and strum itself but it won't "re-strum" on the same note again then. Most of this video was MIDI from my DAW going through a Vermona qMI MIDI to CV. Gate into strum and pitch into the 1v/oct input.

It's always hard to be objective and say something is "the best" as the uses cases outweigh the potential of any one module for "bells". Analogue FM, digital modulation, modal synthesis all will do nice bells. There's certainly lots of mileage in Rings for bell like tones. do you have any more specific examples so we can narrow it down? That'll help me form a better answer.

Recordings of bells are best. Especially if recorded to wax cylinders or minidisc.

awesome review! really helpfull! Do you recommend buying the Rings and Peaks to use as effects for other external synths like a microbrute, SH101 or MS2000? I want to start a modular rack but haven't got the money yet for enough modules (vca, vco, lfo's etc etc) to make a standalone system. And is there any way to get my hands on the contact mic module?

+Marnix van Hal Well Peaks will provide you with you CV to modulate things, what are your inputs on the MS2000 and the SH101? You can process anything with Peaks other than triggers/gates etc. Rings is great fun with a range of inputs. Something dynamic that already features filtering and VCA modulation works great. The contact mic module is the Music Thing Modular Mikrophonie available from Thonk.co.uk

Thank you for taking the time to make this. Some beautiful sounds :) Can you explain how you get a stereo into your daw/recorder/mixer - Where does the output from rings go to?

Output from Rings could go straight to a mixer or sound card. Or into a specific output module which is handy. You can process both of these in the modular though or anything else really. The outputs are 3.5mm jacks so adapters would be needed to go straight into most things.

Nothing to be sorry about, I had a tonne of questions and got a lot of help getting into this too. So first you need to define a few things ... how many sources, how many channels of mixing do you need? Mono or stereo? What outputs do you need? Jacks / XLRs / adapters on cables / headphones etc. Is volume important? How many channels? What will your mixing or recording set up be for other things in the set up?

If I had 4 sound sources for example, 2 of them stereo, and the finally leave the system through a stereo pair of outputs, but not before going through some kind of mixer modules that would allow individual volume control (maybe even allow envelopes to affect volume?) The goal is bring all of this out from the modular and into either 1. A dedicate recorder like the zoom and/Or the computer for combining with other tracks. Apologies again if m sounding vague. The idea is for the modular to feel like a self contained instrument that would interface with an external recorder but with individual control over all sound sources inside the modular before they head outside of the system.

Great demonstration! I'm having some dificulty tuning Rings to play with external synths. I use uScale to quantize it to a scale but then I find it hard to get it in tune with external instruments playing a progression. Any tip? Cheers!

the structure knob provides such massive shifting harmonic content it can sometimes feel out of tune. Keep everything static and play one long note into it against a reference or into a tuner to get yourself set up first. Then you should be good to go. Hope that helps.

playback can be anything from a laptop into an input interface/module, to an in depth sampler module or just a simple Radio Music from Music Thing Modular.

Love your reviews, a few purchases were the result of your videos, including 'Rings'. One thing I'm not clear on while you're covering the modes... You have strum and v/oct inputs patched, is the sequence only strumming, only changing v/oct, or both?

It has to be both, otherwise they wouldn't be able to get repeated notes out of it. v/oct only self-strums if you change note.

Hey, if I already have Braids & Rings (as well as Clouds, Peaks, Streams, etc.), do you think that I already have most of what Elements can provide in terms of modal synthesis? Would purchasing Elements be a little redundant? I have other VCOs as well (Spectrum, Shapeshifter) so don't know if this would be too much.

Well Elements has the other half of Modal Synthesis Rings doesn't. So depends how deep you want to get into it.

I wonder: You have this "strummed" melody line in the beginning & also another like this but different somewhere in the video. This strum-pause-strum-pause-melody - I can't quite guess what the source for this "human-organic" melodies might be? Can you help me? A certain gate source?

+deefman it's a midi sequence from my DAW, so it's simple to put together ... not so much on the modular! :) A burst generator like the Noise Engineering one would work well.

at 15:19 where it begins to talk about polyphony what is creating the "triple strum" is it the MIDI sequence of notes close together being fed into the V/oct or is it cleverly spaced gates into the Strum input??

It's MIDI from the DAW so a quick cluster of non overlapping notes gives both the quick burst of 1v/oct changes and a quick burst of gates. However Rings will "pluck" itself when a change on 1v/oct is detected with no gate input so you wouldn't need the gate necessarily.

What is playing the sequence in the beginning and the end. You speak about its own internal pulse generator, and was wondering if it was only the rings playing with that generator, or are you using some vco to play this! And very nice video. Cheers!

+Ecstasy In Order it's just the Rings module into Clouds. No oscillators, just the simple on board pulse generator exciting the resonator. It's a midi sequence from my DAW playing the midi notes in.

There's no input in the first patch or the one at 15.18. But the strum and 1v/oct are coming from my DAW sending MIDI out to the modular.

each note is really short so gates don't overlap. That creates the strum affect with the fast "strums" of notes in the sequence.

+DivKidVideo Noticed you have a stackable going to the external input from the 6:00 to around 10:50. What are your two sources, and how can you stack on the input without overloading the circuit?

When this first happens in the patch starting around 8:26. As the title and description says it's an external bass synth. The stacking on the input isn't mixing signals (this isn't a good idea) I'm using the stackable as intend which is to split signals like a passive mult. It's how I'm getting my dry (not going through Rings) and wet signals (Rings processed). The green stackable takes the bass synth audio present on the expert sleepers cable in the back of it down to a mixer so I have my dry split. It goes from dry (not rings) at 8:26 to Rings around 8:37. It's the same signal splitting for the latter parts with vocals, drums etc. You can split the signal at the source with a stackable. So say a VCO output plug in a stackable and another cable into the stackable there. Then take the stackable to one source and the other cable to another. Or go VCO output into stackable and plug the stackable into it's desination and split it at that side.

thanks for the kind words. The signal flow is dependent on what's plugged in. So output on one end to an input on the other. Yet the signal is available at both ends. So it's another way of working and patching.

How are you doing the Vocal part. I have rings but can't quite figure out how to make it play notes. My set up is 2 Mother32s, braids, streams, ripples, & rings..i know I can use the mother 32 with rings but don't know how

Hi Michael, which vocal part? If you can list the timing in the video that would be helpful. With the Mother32 you could patch the gate output into the Strum on Rings and the pitch output on the Mother32 into the V/OCT in on Rings. Alternatively you could take the audio output from a Mother32 into the "IN" and process audio through it. I hope that's helpful for you.

Vocal just goes into an interface module to bring the level up to euro rack voltages and then that goes into the input of rings. How are you getting on with the general "playing notes" of Rings?

Can you explain how you did that with the drums for a complete modular noob? How could you achieve the same with drums coming from a drm1? Stack the individual outs to something in the Rings? Thanks for any help

Hi James, you can run audio into Rings. So if you bring audio from other sound sources into a interface module (modular levels are higher than instrument and line by fair bit) such as the Doepfer A-119 you can then just patch that right into Rings.

+allears62 yeah Elements has a chord generation like a solid block chord, this does the strummed poly note thing. Braids by the way does the strummed poly thing in the PLUK mode.

+Arjan Schuijt Hi, I took the odd and even output to my Pittsburgh OUTS and then into my sound card. If I wanted to use the odd and even within modular with only mono mixers. I'd try to create two differently processed mono paths to create a dual layered signal at the end (even going back to mono). Maybe filter one output while using a different envelope on a VCA on the other. Or just take one output which works well too.

Hello, it's not a ring modulator at all. The name may be deceptive Rings is just a module name. It's a resonator, not a ring modulator. Of course you can think of similarly if you wish as something to process a waveform. In the same way as you can think of a wave folder and a filter as two units that handle harmonic content. But they do it very differently.

I mentioned redundancy on the basis that both units can produce "bell" or "gong" type sounds, with Rings, of course, being capable of doing so much more. Then again, we wouldn't have Daleks without Ring Modulators 😋😂

Hey @DivKidVideo, just wanted to ask, for the 'Polyphony' section of the video (15:21 mark), what were you using to patch to the input of 'Strum', to get that successive strumming? Just a simple sequence from a quantiser? Feeling a little silly to ask this, but I am trying to figure out how to do something similar. Great video overview, by the way. Thanks in advance! = )

+mono bono hey, don't ever feel silly asking something and feel free to ask anything anytime. It's my DAW sending midi to a Vermona qMI midi to CV module. So easy to make drawing midi patterns. It could be done with overlapping gates / logic. What equipment do you have?

+DivKidVideo Thanks for the reply DivKid. Just got my Rings yesterday, and was trying to figure out how to achieve the strumming like you did in the video. Initially, I tried using the Gate output from my Modcan Touch Sequencer into the Strum input, with the Pitch CV out from the TS into the V/Oct. Clearly, that didn't work. Tried using a QCD to trigger the Strum, but couldn't get it to work, as well. Might need to mess around a bit more to figure something out, without using a piezo, or contact mike. So, with regards to the MIDI to CV method you did, it was just three successive MIDI Notes from your DAW? Thanks again for the help. = )

+mono bono yeah it was just four short notes in a row. To get the guitar style strum you need to be able to sequence things way beyond a basic step sequence. Although the notes will still bleed into each other with a slowly steady gate pattern. But the note will obviously but shower and steady. Not a fast "rake of the strings" then a huge gap before the next one.

Just learning Rings, I have Mother 32 Kbd Out patched to Rings In. When Mother 32 is played by a midi piano roll then Rings is much quieter than with Mother 32 sequencer playing. Is it because the Mother sequencer gate volts are steeper than the midi gates?

Hello, Plaits is much more varied with all the modes it offers. But if you like the sound of Rings and it's modes then having the two outputs in stereo is really lovely.

I am having trouble understanding the Poly mode. I get the fact that you need to "strum" to achieve some kind of polyphony but what actually happens if you press 4 notes at the same time? Will it only play and decay the first note? Thanks

Hey, so this isn't MIDI where you can play polyphonically. Nearly all modular synth modules are monophonic in that they have a single input. Pitch comes on the 1v/oct input and there's only one here. There's also one one gate input to trigger the sound. The 'strum' works by playing a fast group of notes and what happens is each note overlaps and rings into the next. A bit like slowly strumming a guitar chord. You'd only hit one string a once but each string (unless muted) would keep ringing into the sound of the next string. This allows you to do that 4 times and also have those voices pan around the odd and even (or you could take that as left and right outputs). I hope that helps. If not let me know I'm happy to chat.

rings and clouds seem ok.. but also the new roland demora... there so exp. I dont mind waiting for more better ones to come out while i bank dough and get more bang for buck later while i learn more of what i have now thou.. but clouds, rings, and rol. demora seem timeless ienough to get if i had the dough already.. eh?

+aliasghar907 they'd be fun. I don't think saving for "what might come in the future" is ever worth really bothering with for too long. Who knows what other people are working on and what might come out. Lots stays unannounced and just appears. Saving up some dough to fall back on for new stuff is wise though. But if you want specific stuff I'd grab it and try it out. Buying second means you won't loose much money selling things on.

how good does this track v/oct changes? is it hard to tune to my other instruments?

tracking is spot on and I've not found it hard to fine tune against other instruments. The CV input to frequency acts as a fine control when you don't patch anything in so it's really easy.

I just finished building mine a few hours ago. You can run it as it's own sound source, just trigger each note with a gate to the strum input and put the pitch cv into the v/oct! I have yet to mess around with the excitation input, but I'm sure it will sound great too.

+Sadin that would work really well. But you should buy Elements if you want a standalone voice. With just the basic exciter in Rings you're missing a massive amount of textures. Elements has both the Exciter and the Resonator to do Modal Synthesis.
