I've a tiny bit of experience managing people in situations where they need to improvise and make do with what's available. Chris is a non-starter. Useless. Actually worse than useless. If anything could make this journey harder than the bad conditions and lack of supplies, it's him. I'd have honestly put him overboard.

I trained with US Special Forces as part of their Phase 3 training. They take a bunch of "ordinary" soldiers from throughout Ft. Liberty (FKA Bragg) and put them with the guys who are going for their Green Beret for their last phase of training. It's the candidates job to take an assortment of soldiers from different MOS's and train them into a cohesive unit. Just like they would do in their real world missions. We had a guy like Chris. Thought he was on a 3 week vacation. Did as little as possible and was just an ass. Worse was that he was an NCO (mechanic) in the Army. They removed him about 10 days in. I'm sure they make it seem worse for the show (only showing the bad he does and not anything good). But I know exactly what they feel wanting him gone.

They had a rescue ship but it was miles away, Ant didn’t want it even visible to his crew as he tried to make it as authentic as possible. His brilliant book ‘First Man In’ talks about this experience.
