In today's vlog, I'll talk to you about my take on the PowerShift Duel Clutch Transmission that is in our 2015 Ford Fiesta SE. While this transmission seems to receive a lot of negative feedback, my view of this transmission may not be like everyone else's.

I have had a 2012 Focus since 2018 (125000 mile)....stopped shifting in 2020. Replace the computer with a junk yard computer. Works great, I have 239500 miles on it. Love it. Just bought a 2012 focus for my wife. Had to change the transmission and the clutch and clutch forks. Not that hard of a job. 2 days work. Did the adaptive programming with Forscan.

Mike, this possibly the BEST explanation of how the DCT works. If the sales people would explain to the would be buyer the characteristics of this transmission, there would be less bitchin and the class action lawsuits would have probably never have happened. I just purchased a used 2013 Focus with 56K on the clock and experienced some shudder and jerks when starting from a stand still. The dealer agreed to replace the clutch packs after I complained. I will be picking the car up in a couple of days. Therefore, I hope it runs better. I really LOVE the car because it goes LIKE STINK and without a turbo! Again, thank you for uploading this video. CHEERS!

Great video!! It was a very good honest review which I like. DCT transmissions are by nature very finicky. I’m unsure why ford opted for a dry clutch as a pose to a wet clutch like VW/Audi. In my opinion this will shorten the life of the clutches. I’m guessing it’s to keep service costs down as now fluid changes but I think it’s mistake(I may be wrong). I’ve recently ordered a 2019 ford transit custom with a six speed power shift transmission and I’m eager find out if I have any issues. I’m sure I won’t but a lot of people are slating this transmission. I guess I’ll find out. Thanks again for the great video!

Hello. Really useful. I have a Kuga uk (escape) late 2017 2'000 cc diesel. I think it has the same gear box as yours. It's not new and I'm the second owner and if I'm honest, I didn't know it wasn't fully automatic when I purchased it. It done 23000 miles and I think it's quite a noisy unit. I have been complaining to the dealer that it's making a lot of noise, more than expected... perhaps your video has explained a few things that go some way as an explanation...it's getting an gearbox oil change in three days so it will be interesting to see if it makes a difference....great video.

I’ve own a 2017 Ford Focus and I my first clutch replaced at 40,000 km. It been nothing but a nightmare having this transmission. The warranty covers the repair but it’s already starting to act up again. Other then the transmission it’s a great car. I like the feel of the car when it acting properly. But that feeling goes away quickly. The powershift has been nothing but problems for many people. From my understand the problem has to do with what the clutch material is made of. Thanks for making the video. Ford completely tried to hide this from un suspecting buyers.

Ditch it the so called fix doesn’t last worth a damn. After so many miles our stealership started playing games stuff like oh we’re backed up for the next 5-7 weeks call back then. Then the service advisor and service manager wouldn’t return calls to set up a service appointment. Finally after a year of fighting back and forth I got an appointment to “fix” it once again. I wish they would just buy this damn car back or someone hit it and total it ugh what a nightmare.

The 2012 focus was the last UAW built car. I am 65 year old and always bought “American Made” cars. I got tired of my friends buying Toyotas and Hondas and having them for over 20 years. I remember the mid 80s Cadillac I bought, the Buick regal, the multiple saturns and a GM truck. I bought them new maintain them religiously even did tuneups once a year oil changes every 3 to 5000 miles using synthetic oil. Yeah multiple issues and they are only lasted seven years at the most, the Cadillac I had to get rid of after four years and two engines. I now buy an even more American made car made by Toyota. The Camry is the greatest car I ever owned and I realize now, I was foolish I was to buy GM and Ford products. Ensure the GM workers made great money pay and benefits more so years ago but I got in return was junk. I see now be American and buy Japanese nameplate their cars are more American made in most cases than the American car companies ford doesn’t even make cars in the United States except for the mustang.

I have my 2016 Focus custom tuned and you can feel a noticeable difference. The stock tune slips the clutches on takeoff. I was even told this by a service worker at Ford. They do this within the software in an effort to get smoother (not as firm) shifts. It's damaging the clutches. Yes, you can have shudder from the oil leaks, but they've fixed the input shaft seal and since haven't had problems. It's Tom's tune btw, Google that or Focus power. With his tune, I don't feel the slipping like the stock tune. The shifts can still be jerky because in making them more firm, you're telling the car to engage/disengage more decisively.

Jason Ashley I was considering buying the Toms tune, I have the same car and same year. I’ve had the car for a week, shudders from 1-2 and sometimes 2-3. Sometimes if it’s cold it doesn’t start till the clutches warm up, and if I floor it on the highway it’ll do better after. I’m getting it serviced by the dealer and then after that I was thinking about getting the tune, is it deff worth the 460?

You left out more substantial information. The "dual clutch" system is a real gearbox with real clutches. They important point is that there is no torque converter that is present in typical legacy automatic type transmissions that are hydraulic driven. Look forward to ALL "automatic" transmissions to be of this type eventually because the efficiency is not a "tiny" amount, it is pretty substantial due to the elimination of the torque converter that is a major consumer of power in the legacy type automatic. These new type transmissions are quickly evolving. Audi/VW have been doing it for over 10 years now and they are getting better (they were very problematic int he beginning).

I drive automated manuals of various sizes and designs all the way up to a semi. The occasional clunkiness and noise is no problem for me,however when the fords start shuddering one must immediately disconnect a battery cable for at least an hour then within 15 min of re connecting the battery start the engine find a stretch of road that you can floor it from a stop and thru at least the shift to fourth 3 times in a row. AND NEVER INCH FORWARD IN TRAFFIC as that rides the dry clutch in these powershits from ford. I know this clutch scrubbing trick because a bought a 2015 focus with a AM🥴 it now has 26k on it and been toad (flat towed) an additional 15k while delivering vehicles. The OCCASIONAL shudder is not a problem.

Nice explanation of the DCT but you are a bit off about the regular automatic transmission. With a conventional automatic, you're not losing your fuel economy at shifts as they are pretty quick anyway. You're losing fuel economy because you're losing torque all the time as the transmission does not really couple the drivetrain directly like a manual or a DCT does. A conventional automatic transmits torque through rotating parts constantly lubricated by oil that makes them able to slide on and off when shifting. The same oil builds up intrinsically as a fluid film between the parts, and that decreases friction and wastes your torque (turns it into heat).

The Gasoline cars (maybe not the 2.3) have a dry-sump DCT PowerShift Transmission so no fuel to change there. Ducts are further categorized by wet and dry clutch. Wet clutches are bathed in oil like automatic transmission and motorcycles. They can slip more because the generated heat is constantly removed by the oil. They can even transmit some power using the oil's viscosity. The downside to wet clutches is a slight penalty to fuel efficiency as the open clutch still creates some drag Ford and Hyundai use dry clutch for their DCTs. As mentioned, since they cannot handle slip nearly as well, they'll try to avoid slip by engaging as much as possible. Smoothness is not the primary concern for the engineering team This is not to say dry clutch are fragile. When designed and driven correctly, many stick shift drivers can make their clutches last for 300k miles
@alanjm1234
@alanjm1234 Жыл бұрын
Ford used wet clutch DCT in most or maybe all their diesel versions. These have proven to be reliable provided they are serviced properly and on schedule. Which involves a transmission oil change about every 40,000 miles. Unfortunately they hold quite a lot of very expensive oil, so it's tempting for service departments to charge you for the oil, while not actually changing it. If the oil is left too long it becomes contaminated, which causes pressure control problems, which can then cause shuddering and grabbing of the clutch. Ultimately this can damage the clutch, which further contaminates the oil, and you're on the path to transmission failure.
@alanjm1234
@alanjm1234 Жыл бұрын
A major cause of early clutch failures was Fords failure to inform buyers that a DCT is NOT an automatic, and should be driven differently from one. Ie, you should never use drive to hold the car on a hill like you can an auto. Creeping forward in traffic just idling with your foot off the brake should be minimised.. Basically avoid situations where the clutch is slipped for long periods.

Whenever I feel the shudder, I just lift off the gas, and press on it throttle again in a linear way. Nothing too serious imo. That shudder is also evident in manuals if you bite the clutch too early and the engine still has no torque to give. I have mine for 6+ years now, and have no troubles with the transmission. I set it to Neutral everytime during full stop (as stated by the manual), and rarely accelerate like I am in some damned racing game.

This will be the third time for 14M01 - DPS6 Transmission Clutch Shudder / Transmission Input Shaft Seal this “fix” only lasts 2-4 months before the issue occurs again. The car is virtually undriveable when shuddering it’s like starting off in second every time with zero power and you’ll be creamed if you pull out in front of someone cause you can’t get outta the way. Ford powershit is a dual clutch transmission, a me-too copy of VW's DSG transmission. dual clutch was developed for racing purpose, where human require sub one second to shift from gear to gear. Even a seasoned profession F1 driver (on a manual transmission) cannot beat the computer controlled dual clutch transmission. so DCT became a must-have in auto racing. VW mass produced the DCT and named it as DSG on its GTI. In my view, DCT needs a driver with experience on manual transmission to fully appreciate its merit. My wife complained about the DCT all the time; but start to realize how the transmission works when she started to drive a single clutch auto shift transmission.

Where exactly are you that you can get to Cleveland? I'm in Columbus, own a 2014 Focus, and I have experienced jerkiness/shudder from first to second gear, but after that shift happens it's smooth as silk as long as I stay on the gas/accelerator. If it was a 30-45 MPH zone and my car doesn't shift to the next gear for my respect to the speed limit, it might shudder a split second longer than had I not just kept up my acceleration like getting on to a highway. Otherwise, shifts from 2-6 are perfect. If you had any tips on taking off from a stop sign/light to reduce the jerkiness of first gear to second, what might you suggest? I have also noticed that the problems get worse, like you said, after an hour or so of continual driving, like going from place to place around the same city. I went to lunch, then the zoo, then a mall, and then to a friend's house, and then to an escape room for the evening, and it got progressively worse throughout the day as I kept driving it when going to the next part of my day. I guess a symptom of the overheating you were referring to? Not sure, but those are the days when it's at its worst, when I'm going around the city multiple places in one day rather than the normal - 'drive to work, work, drive home from work' routine.

Braking and how/when you brake is a little different in the DCT , but it can really help achieve smoothness in all gear changes, even 1st to 2nd from dead stops. I've noticed my Focus really needs more complete stops and solid pressure on the brake for effective feedback. Remember, a computer is controlling the transmission, so thinking like it with the brake and gas can go a long way. Also I like to open up with the throttle when given the chance, like on steep hills or stretches of highway to really let the trans shift fully and completely. Hope this helps.

But I believe all companies utilizing such technology should have sell these cars only to drivers with license to drive manual cars ONLY as the rest of the drivers will NEVER understand what is really going on. Thus they are wearing the transmission a lot faster than it should. I am talking from experience. Of course the system is not bullet-proof, therefore some issues could have happen even when new. I’ve owned many manual and automatic transmission vehicles over 30 years. Yeah it feels like a manual transmission except for the random unannounced your starting off in second from a dead stop shuddering with zero power as your engine is doing its best to not stall out. Go drive around in a manual for years randomly having a passenger shift you into second when you stop. It’s a barrel of laughs not to mention extremely dangerous go on I dare you to try it oh and don’t try to correct it by adding more clutch cause you certainly can’t do that in a powershift transmission.

To make it simple for everyone. You drive the car like a manual do everything like you would do in a manual. Do not drive it like a auto. You will destroy the clutches more faster. If you know how to drive a auto and a manual then you should be able to drive a dct no problem

I have a 2013 Focus Titanium w/ the DCT & the TCM went out recently for no reason whatsoever w/ only 33k original miles. The car constantly sputters & shudders on acceleration & just isn't reliable & that's what was scared off consumers. It's a good looking car, but one of the main reasons that Ford will no longer be selling cars. Just look at the US sales of the Focus vs. the Civic & Corolla? Ford really lost the market w/ their version of the DCT. I was told recently that the 2016 & up Focus drives better, however I have no experience driving a newer model, so I have no idea.

I have a 2016 Focus and I can tell you that it has the same problems with the power shift trans as the earlier years. Biggest piece of crap I have ever owned. Mine only has 35,000 miles and the transmission is jerking shuddering, grinding and slipping. Just a matter of time before she will need a new clutch or trans.

I heard it's the late 2016s that have the better TCM. There are early 2016s and late 2016s. I have a 2014 with nearly 162,000 miles. Just bought it a few months ago and had no idea about any of this stuff. So far I've only had to replace a fuse.

So is it basically a clutch problem? I have a 2014 fiesta s I have overheated the trans once or twice transmission light on gauges appeared twice I drive the car kinda hard I want to keep this car as bad as it may be What's the solution to the transmission and clutches Does ford install newer designed clutches ?

We ended up having the clutch replaced in ours about a year and a half after this video was made. The new clutches I was told were redesigned a bit and so far almost 2 years later, this clutch still acts perfectly fine. I was told to allow for heavier acceleration at times. This will keep the clutch discs rough and minimize slipping.

The transmission isn’t the issue, it’s the duel clutch packs they used before they redesigned them.

The Focus seems to have more issues with this transmission compared to the Fiesta. I think it’s because the Focus is slightly larger and the engine delivers more torque than it could handle?

This transmission is junk, plain and simple. VW’s Dual Clutch (DSG) is brilliant. It’s a wet clutch system vs Ford’s dry clutch setup.
