Lily using this character to publicly honor her partner in a way she otherwise couldn’t is brilliant. Queer women will always reign supreme.

Saw her play three times in Chicago. Years later she was coming to our town to perform so I had some t-shirts made up that friends and I wore that said, "Stop talking about the cake!" Wrote her a long note & told her we were LGBT & were going to be in the audience wearing the shirts. Got there early and a sweet guy came over & said to stay in our seats after the performance and he would come and get us. She performed the bit that included the quote and did a little wink and gesture to us in particular two seconds before the spotlight went off. So my friends and I got to meet her, (along with some other lucky folks) give her flowers and have a few photos taken with her. Such a sweetheart, she started to walk away and I called out her name, she stopped and we hugged good-bye. It was a very special evening since she has been one of my fav all time performers since the days of "Laugh In." This inteview is fun as hell, so love her comedic genius & the characters she creates. She has some great stories about the things she and her brother would do growing up, where the basis of her comedic life was already forming. Long live the Lily!

The on stage 19 interview she is in character for the whole time with amazing observations on her own work! Saw her first Broadway show in NY - went to it 5x and met her backstage on one occasion... She had all of us who were stage door people sign our autograph for her on one of those large board meeting flip pads... I was on the page with Carol Burnett since she ws there that night too. Had two t- shirts from The Bottom Line as a gift for her and Jane Wagner. She was quite touched as not many people acknowledged Jane. Such a class act she wrote me a thank you note for the shirts. Got it and the poster from the show framed. Years later it was destroyed by water damage in a storage unit. Replaced with a poster from her second show signed by her and Jane.

My opinion of this is that many actresses could have pulled this upper class character off. Not too difficult and, quite frankly, she could have been more witty IMHO.
