Lesser minds are often uncomfortable in the presence of greatness. We can always tell when its a "lesser mind" becuase they are so stupid they hang around and leave a comment complaining, instead of just immediatly going away and watching something else, like normal people do.

As a sort of Ham operator I just want to say I really appreciate all your videos as I'm learning and researching to get into GMRS. When I say "sort of" HAM I mean I went through all the testing and proper book work to get licensed over 20 years ago, but never got into it as Ham nerd. My buddy and I, many years ago just wanted a way communicate out in the woods. I've been using 2 meter Ham ever since for that purpose, but the HAM world has just gotten way too complicated and just stupid technical and affordable (but also quality) radios like Yeasus are dropping off the face of earth. I can see now that GMRS is really the way to go. Ham is all but dead. So I'm excited to get into this and buy some radios. You make the best videos ever and I REALLY enjoy your humorous and extremely clear style of presentation. Well DONE!

Appreciate the detailed coverage of the MXT575! I just bought an MXT500 and was concerned I jumped the gun on a mobile radio. However, I like having the display on the unit (not the mike). I’m comfortable staying with the MXT500 for my needs. Keep up the great instructional videos.

In March I bought the MXT275 (USB-C) model. My first GMRS radio, though I'm due to renew my license in a month, previously I just borrowed a GMRS radio for car meets in the mountains where cell phones do not work. Anyway, after getting that 275 I was really considered upgrading to the MXT575 when it releases, but as you mentioned it is the same simple interface as the 275. For a fixed station is likely all anyone would need since you'll likely not have more than one repeater you plan to use on any given repeater channel. For me I find that my 15W 275 reaches the local repeater just fine, so I have no need for a 50W home unit. In my truck I'm going with the KG-1000G because as a mobile unit I want to program the repeaters in the various areas I visit, so that radio suits this use better. Perhaps with the 50W unit in the truck I'll find another repeater "nearby" that I would like to use but the 15W 275 just can't reach, maybe then I'll update to the 575 in the house, already have a 30A power supply running the 275. Also, Midland appears to have released an update very recently that should enable wide band for the repeater channels on the MXT275 (USB-C). My 275 is in a box to get ready to ship out for this update, making the need to upgrade for wide band go away as well. Also, I've watched a few of your videos, I really followed the repeater project as that was informative on several things.

BUT, I'm extremely happy that this one is wide band. I'm gonna go find the 40watt Midland review and hope it's wideband. Thanks for your demos, I appreciate your straight honesty. 👏 ...Alan in 🇨🇱

I’m a ham / radio dork and love the simplicity of this. I use gmrs for talking to non-radio people off-roading, road tripping, etc. and just want something simple and powerful for that that has a clean and easy install since I’m also running tri-band ham in the same truck and don’t have much room for the second radio. I’ll save the more complex stuff and wide scanning options for the ham rig.

I believe that I have finally found the 'Man in the High Tower'. I have been 'watching' (oblique reference back to the High Tower) you and have been lurking around for a while. I finally pulled the trigger on the MXT575 based a lot on 'The Tower's' recommendation. Any preferred mounting location on a 2022 4-door Rubicon JLU? Jeeps are all made of aluminum (all-you'-min-E-um) and blow-molded pretzel plastic; I could drag a chain for a ground plane although Smokey Bear wouldn't be happy. My wife won't give up her favorite brownie pan. She said she just got it properly seasoned.

I have this radio. I have it mounted behind the rear seat in my Silverado with cat6 ethernet cable running up to the console for the microphone. The tiny antenna supplied is mounted using a bulletproof diesel third brake light antenna mount. You can barely notice the antenna there. I checked the SWR today, using the same SureCom meter as this video and it read 1.06 :1. I like the all in one setup because I work in a bad area and when I unplug the mic. and toss it in the glove box. It's looks like I have nothing to steal. I ijust use this for truck to truck comms or maybe for camping with handhelds. Works well for me.

I considered getting a "50w" setup, but even with the BTECH 50x1 at only $219, I ended up deciding that the Retevis RA-25 with the Nagoya UT-72G (a DB20-G clone) at "20w" seems like it was more than sufficient based on your previous testing. Also at $106 for the radio and $25 for the antenna ($131), it seems like good value.

Love how you put your ground plane on a brownie pan and not centered and coiled cord as well as broadcasting from your windowsill (inside I’m sure)! I just installed this radio in my Jeep and when I posted about my radio check hitting the repeater 5x5 40 miles away, inside my shop with the doors closes…. Sent a Sad-HAM tech license into orbit and he had to Ham-Splain me that is dangerous to me and the radio….

@NotaRubicon Productions .... thanks for the great video. Hopefully you or one of your favorite viewers can help a newbie out. I just installed my MXT575, using a shortened 12' midland cable(by CoolTech) attached to a Mildand MXTA26 antenna. I have it mounted to a CoolTech stainless steel nmo mount next to the am/fm antenna on the passenger side hood cowl panel of my JT. When testing, on channel 01, I had an swr of 1.01 / FW W 2.94 / RW W .000 , but whe I tested on channel 20 I had an swr of 1.62 / FW W 27 / RW W 1.51. I first do not understand why there is a difference in swr , but secondly why is the output wattage so low ? I just read Midland GMRS antennas are pre-tuned to center channel (does that mean channel 11 ?) I can retest on channel 11 and lower the antenna some into the base as shown in your video, this may improve the swr, but what could possibly be causing the difference in swr and the low output power... Thank you for any help.

@@sarahhudock7991 well I was thinking if I just had say 3 channels I really care to monitor I would like to be able to scan just those 3. It cuts down time because the scan on the midlands are relatively slow and may miss part of a message. It would be nice to have a priority channel option where I set my main channel as priority it will consider that channel over others while scanning. I could put my commercial icom radio in my jeep to accomplish this but this midland for me would be nearly perfect if it had the those options.

This radio is definitely for me. I'm a simple guy. 1/3 Watched the entire vid (btw, BRAVO ZULU) and read thru all of the comments. If I understand correctly, in a vehicle, the MXT-575 DOES NOT require a 13.8vdc power supply. But will operate in a somewhat degraded mode @ 12vdc when the engine is off. 2/3 Applies to a Toyota 4Runner: as the 6" antenna is 1/4 wave, is there any advantage to a longer antenna? If so, what is the nomenclature? 3/3 What's the 'simple science' behind mounting the antenna on the hood (where) vs the roof (optimal loc)?

Interesting at 7:23 the chassis appears to have a 4-hole mount & round opening for a fan like the KG-1000g but no fan like the MTX500. Is this correct? Could be another difference when remote mounting is a big part of this radio.

Randy, You said it does not support multiple repeaters on the same channel. I understand how this works from the B Tech 50X3 which I own. Does it give you 22 workable memory locations or 30 (1-22 simplex and 15-22 repeater setups)? Or do you have to share 15 through 22 with simplex and repeater? In other words do you have to toggle the offset on and off whether you're on repeater or simplex? I've been asked by a member of our local GMRS group to make a recommendation on this radio and I want to more fully understand it before I do. Thanking you in advance for your response and for all you do. I love your videos and share them with our local group all the time. (PS. When I say 22 or 30 I do understand that channel 7 through 14 will not transmit)

This was really great performance. I am impressed with this set up. With a big "real" antenna, simplex potential looks really great. Price tag is really kind of a put off though. Used or discounted might help on that. I'm seeing affordable GMRS as what more of us need.

Does this radio power on automatically when power is applied, or do you have to turn it on manually every time you cycle the key in a vehicle.

Thanks for the great video and explanations. What other walkie-talkie would you recommend that is easy to use and program in conjunction with the MXT575? I know that in the video you contacted your buddy on the Motorola XTS 5000 but I am reading that the 5000 is very difficult to program. I am looking for a simple solution as I am new to this. Thanks in advance. Bastien

Thanks I ordered one from your link.. let me just say great humor.. I was in cb in the 70 and 80s and just got my GMRS license But…I never felt the ROI was worth all the technical crap to get a license and the promote you memorize questions. the bottom line the geek HAM really just want a small group. The sad fact I believe is that as they DIE so is the hobby. WhenI get my drivers license I am not required to know how to tear apart a engine. Theyshould just test for rules and Regis and code of conduct for ham and pay a fee. At the age of 69 I have more important hobbies Than sitting all day in front of a radio…BUT if they made easy to get a ham license they could save the hobby. We need as much communication as possible in a mass emergency.. Thanks for the review

Great review and works great for my application. Having all the controls in the microphone is a huge plus for my needs. However, a short coming is in programming repeaters. This seems to be the same with the MXT275 and the MXT575. I have two local repeaters and I have one setup. However the one on 462.650 has a CTCSS RX/TX of 254.1. According to the chart in the user manual it only goes up to 250.3. I have setup other GMRS radios with Chirp but not sure how to overcome this issue. Thoughts?

Can you power that radio by using an addafuse from the fuse panel inside?

What are the details on the repeater 60 miles away? What equipment is used and how high is the antenna? Would love to hear more information on repeaters from you. LOVE your content and sense of humor!

The only details about that repeater that we have is that it is on a mountain, at an elevation much higher than me or Chris.

I'd love to see how Chris would compare the MXT575 audio against the KG-1000G, using the same antenna on the same brownie pan. To me, those are the two 50-watt mobile radios that compete against each other in terms of power, price, and the way you can remote the radios' displays away from the chassis.

Steven, you speak for me also. That's the bid that's the reason for my question right after yours. I believe the KG 1000 is more flexible Supporting multiple repeater setups for the same channel. I also own a B-Tech 50X1 that does not support this and I do not like that. It has 30 usable memory locations and anything you store outside of those 30 memory locations will not transmit. 30 minus the 7 low power channels technically. I believe I've miss spoken.

Curious if that hole in the back is for a fan? Wasn't sure if maybe it doesn't need one?

I see someone beat me to it in the remarks below--I was going to complain that around the 7:50 mark, we missed the satisfying removal of the plastic cover from the mike display. Ahhhhhh

Hows the antenna work with just the 2 way taped metal magnetic mount as a "GROUND PLANE" I'm assuming within specs if they included it.
